The gateway ruins were older than time itself. As Luna, Adrian, Seraphina, Dorian, Achradina, and Kratos stepped inside, the air grew thick, humming with ancient power. The stone walls pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat buried within the earth.
"Stay close," Kratos growled. His Blades of Chaos flickered with faint fire, lighting their way.
The first chamber opened wide, its ceiling vanishing into shadows. Pillars carved with scenes of sea serpents and storms lined the hall, their eyes glowing faintly blue.
As they advanced, the floor trembled. The stone cracked, and from the gaps surged torrents of seawater. The group leapt back as the entire floor shifted, reforming into a shifting maze of platforms above an endless abyss.
"A test," Achradina muttered, her spear raised. "The path itself judges us."
The companions leapt from platform to platform, each stone vanishing behind them. Adrian's claymore cleaved falling debris, while Luna's gauntlets smashed obstacles in their way. At one point, a platform crumbled beneath Seraphina, but Dorian seized her hand, pulling her back with a strength born of loyalty.
After what felt like hours, they reached the far wall—only for a colossal stone guardian to awaken. It rose from the floor, forged of coral and ancient armor, its voice booming like waves crashing on cliffs.
"Only the worthy may pass."
The guardian swung its massive trident, shaking the chamber. Kratos charged forward, blades clashing with divine stone, sparks flying. Luna joined, her gauntlets glowing as she struck its knee, cracking the armor. Adrian swung his claymore in wide arcs, forcing the guardian back while Seraphina's arrows struck glowing runes carved into its chest.
Finally, with a thunderous roar, the guardian fell, crumbling into sand and coral. The chamber rumbled, and a massive door ahead slowly opened.
"First trial," Dorian said, panting. "There will be more."
---
The next chamber was worse. Water rose to their knees, then to their waists, dragging at their movements. Serpents of water coiled and struck, biting with liquid fangs that burned like acid. Achradina's spear danced like lightning, splitting the serpents apart. Luna's fists smashed waves themselves into mist. Yet still, the water kept rising.
At the last moment, Seraphina fired an arrow toward the ceiling, striking a glowing rune. The waters drained instantly, leaving them soaked but alive. The door ahead groaned open.
---
At last, they reached the final chamber—a colossal gate of obsidian and pearl. Beyond it lay a shimmer of blue light: the passage to Poseidon's city.
But before they could approach, the ocean roared as if enraged. The ground split, and from the cracks poured monstrosities of the deep: scaled warriors with shark jaws, serpentine horrors with dozens of eyes, hulking beasts clad in coral armor. Their numbers were endless, blotting out the chamber's light.
Luna's fists tightened. "He knows we're coming."
"Good," Kratos snarled, swinging his blades. "Let him know we are not afraid."
The horde charged. Thousands of monsters filled the chamber, crashing against the six like waves. Kratos was a whirlwind of fire and steel, his Blades of Chaos tearing through scores of enemies. Adrian's claymore cleaved lines of beasts in two, his strikes echoing like thunder. Seraphina's arrows found hearts and eyes with flawless precision, while Dorian shielded her flank, his sword flashing as he cut down every creature that came close.
Achradina spun her spear in blinding arcs, piercing through the densest packs of monsters, while Luna—small, pale, unyielding—smashed through the horde with her gauntlets, each strike breaking the ground itself.
The battle raged for hours. Blood and salt filled the air. Still, the six stood shoulder to shoulder, never faltering, until at last the last monster fell, dissolving into seawater.
Panting, wounded, but unbroken, they turned toward the obsidian gate.
Together, they pressed their hands against it. With a shudder, the massive doors began to open, revealing a flood of blinding blue light beyond. The scent of the sea poured out, vast and eternal.
Luna's chest rose and fell, her cloudy eyes wide with determination.
"We're coming for you, Poseidon."
And with that, the gates to the undersea city opened wide, and the true war began.
