Chapter 37 – A Promise in the Midst of Fear
A suffocating silence hung over the room, so heavy that every breath felt like a burden.
Beyond the closed door, the guttural growls of zombies echoed through the deserted hallways. Sometimes the sounds drifted farther away, only to return moments later, even louder than before. Each chilling growl served as a cruel reminder that death was still lurking just outside, waiting for the slightest mistake.
Above them, a three-bladed ceiling fan turned lazily, powered only by the building's solar backup system. Its cool breeze gently brushed against everyone's faces, but no amount of cold air could extinguish the blazing fear burning inside their hearts.
Adam's gaze slowly shifted toward Jinjin.
His heart tightened the moment he saw her.
She was trembling uncontrollably.
Tiny beads of sweat covered her forehead despite the cool air, her breathing had become uneven, and her hands shook so violently that it seemed all the strength had drained from her body. Every few seconds, she would glance anxiously toward the door before quickly lowering her eyes again, as if she feared the next sound would be the one that shattered the room's fragile safety.
Adam could not bear to watch her suffer any longer.
Without saying a word, he slowly reached out and gently placed his hand over her trembling one.
The touch was soft...
Careful...
Reassuring.
Almost instantly, the violent trembling in Jinjin's hand eased ever so slightly. Her breathing became a little steadier, but the tears she had been desperately holding back for what felt like an eternity finally refused to stay hidden.
She slowly lifted her tear-filled eyes toward Adam.
The moment their eyes met...
Her composure collapsed.
She burst into tears.
Warm streams of tears rolled down her pale cheeks before disappearing into the silky strands of her beautiful hair. Her shoulders shook with every sob as she struggled to catch her breath.
In a broken, trembling voice, she whispered,
"I'm... I'm so scared..."
Her words quivered between sobs.
"I don't even know... whether we'll make it out of here alive..."
The sentence ended in another wave of tears.
She pressed her lips together, trying to stop herself from crying, but the fear she had buried inside her heart for so long had become far too overwhelming.
For several seconds...
Neither of them spoke.
The room was filled with nothing but the sound of her quiet sobbing and the distant growls echoing through the corridors.
Then, after gathering what little courage she had left, she forced herself to speak once more.
"...And... my brother..."
Her voice almost disappeared.
"Do you think... he's still alive?"
The moment those words left her lips, every ounce of strength she had left vanished.
She lowered her head, covered her face with both hands, and broke down completely, crying with painful, uncontrollable sobs.
Watching her like this felt like a knife twisting inside Adam's chest.
Without hesitation, he stepped closer.
Very gently...
He wrapped his arms around her.
There was no selfish intention behind the embrace.
It was simply the desperate attempt of one frightened soul trying to comfort another.
In a calm, gentle voice, Adam said,
"I don't know whether your brother is still alive..."
He paused for a brief moment.
Then his voice became steadier.
"But there is one thing I know for certain."
Looking directly into her tear-filled eyes, he continued,
"As long as I'm alive..."
"I won't let anything happen to you."
His voice carried neither empty confidence nor false heroism.
Only sincerity.
Only determination.
Only a promise born from the depths of his heart.
"I promise you."
Jinjin remained silent.
For several long moments, she simply stared at him.
A storm of emotions flickered across her tearful eyes.
Then...
Very gently...
She stepped out of his embrace and took a step backward.
Silence returned once again.
Adam made no attempt to stop her.
He simply stood there, quietly watching her.
His eyes had become moist, yet not a single word escaped his lips.
He already knew the truth.
Someone else already lived inside Jinjin's heart.
A young man who loved her with all his heart.
Just two days earlier, Miss Selena had read his heartfelt confession letter over the loudspeaker. Every word of that letter had carried genuine love, leaving no room for doubt about his feelings.
Both Jinjin...
And Adam...
Knew that truth all too well.
Adam understood that his own feelings might never be returned.
He knew there was little chance his place would ever exist in her heart.
Yet...
The heart rarely obeys reason.
No matter how hard he tried to bury his feelings...
No matter how many times he told himself to let go...
His love for Jinjin refused to fade.
It only grew stronger with every passing moment.
Slowly, Adam lowered his eyes.
A faint, bittersweet smile appeared on his lips before quietly disappearing into the silence.
Outside, the zombies continued their horrifying growls.
But inside that small room...
Only two sounds remained.
Jinjin's quiet sobs...
And the silent heartbeat of a young man who, despite knowing his love was impossible, simply could not bring himself to let her go.
