Chapter 42 - Shattered Hopes

Chapter 42– Shattered Hopes

Adam's greatest misunderstanding...

Finally came to an end at the age of seventeen.

It was a misunderstanding...

One he had treasured deep within his heart for three long years, protecting it like a beautiful dream.

A dream that had carried him through his darkest days.

A hope upon which he had quietly built his entire future.

And in a single moment...

It all fell apart.

Two days earlier...

Miss Selena's voice had echoed through the school's loudspeakers during the morning announcements.

No one could have imagined that those simple announcements would completely change the life of one student.

Like everyone else, Adam had been sitting quietly at his desk.

At first, he listened absentmindedly.

But then...

Miss Selena began reading a letter.

It was Sam's letter.

With every sentence she read, the expression on Adam's face changed.

Sam had poured every emotion into those words.

His love.

His longing.

His restless heart.

And finally...

He confessed his feelings to Jinjin and asked her to be his girlfriend.

But...

What shattered Adam wasn't Sam's confession itself.

It was the silent truth...

The one he saw reflected in Jinjin's eyes.

The eyes he had always believed looked at him with affection...

Now belonged to someone else.

In that single moment...

Every hope he had nurtured for three years crumbled into pieces.

It felt as though someone had shattered the delicate glass palace he had spent years building inside his heart.

Every dream.

Every wish.

Every silent prayer.

Turned to dust in an instant.

There were no tears in his eyes.

Yet sometimes...

A person's silence is far more heartbreaking than their tears.

And today...

As Jinjin gently stepped away from his embrace...

That same pain returned once again.

It felt as though fate had stolen from him the one person who had quietly become his entire world.

The feeling dragged him back through the years...

To a time when he was nothing more than a little boy in second grade.

The sky had been covered with dark clouds that day.

The air felt unbearably heavy.

Outside his house, relatives had gathered in silence.

Soft whispers.

Quiet sobs.

Faces weighed down by grief.

Little Adam couldn't understand any of it.

He kept asking the same question over and over again.

"Where's Mom?"

"Why is everyone crying?"

But no one answered.

Someone pulled him into a gentle embrace.

Another person stroked his hair.

Yet no one had the courage to tell the innocent child...

That a terrible accident had taken both his mother and his older sister away forever.

That day...

Adam experienced loneliness for the very first time.

The kind of loneliness that remains inside a person...

Even when they are surrounded by people.

After the accident...

The house was never the same again.

The walls hadn't changed.

Neither had the rooms.

Yet somehow...

Every trace of warmth and life had disappeared.

Adam's father was an army officer.

He loved his son deeply.

But expressing that love had never come naturally to him.

He convinced himself that if Adam remained focused on his studies...

The pain of losing his mother and sister would slowly fade.

So he constantly encouraged him to study.

Expected excellent grades.

Urged him to become stronger.

But he never realized...

Some wounds cannot be healed by books.

Some pain...

Can only be eased by the presence of someone who truly cares.

His father's military duties kept him away from home most of the time.

And so...

Even while living under the same roof...

Adam often felt like the loneliest person in the world.

Then...

Fate transferred his father to another city when Adam entered sixth grade.

That was how Adam found himself at a new school.

He had no idea...

That this school would become the place where light would quietly return to his life.

It was there that he met a girl...

Who was, at first, his greatest rival.

They competed in every exam.

Argued over everything.

Made new bets with each passing semester.

That girl's name was...

Jinjin.

But as time passed...

The rival who had once challenged him at every turn slowly became his closest friend.

And perhaps...

The brightest part of his life.

Adam could still remember the day she cried after finishing second in class.

Her friends surrounded her, desperately trying to comfort her.

One offered her water.

Another gently wiped away her tears.

Meanwhile, Jinjin continued sobbing between hiccups.

"How did I end up in second place again?"

For the first time in months...

Adam smiled.

A genuine smile.

Watching her cry over something so innocent and dramatic was strangely amusing.

At that moment, he realized something.

Sometimes...

One person's presence is enough to bring a forgotten smile back to someone else's face.

From that day onward...

Jinjin was no longer just his friend.

She became the reason behind his laughter.

Her playful arguments.

Her stubbornness.

Her bright smile.

Simply having her beside him filled the empty spaces inside his heart.

But perhaps...

Happiness had never truly been written into Adam's destiny.

Today...

When Jinjin quietly stepped back after he embraced her...

That small movement pierced his heart like a sharp blade.

In that instant...

He became that lonely little boy once again.

The same child who had stood alone inside an empty house after losing his mother and sister.

For the second time in his life...

He felt completely alone.

And for the first time...

He wondered if no matter how deeply some people love...

Fate has already decided...

That loneliness will always be their final destination.
