Chapter 70 - The END Of Running

A violent hiss, sharp and guttural, followed by the unmistakable crash of bodies colliding with the forest floor.

Maya's head snapped toward the source. Her body went rigid, every muscle coiling with alertness.

Subject 0011 froze beside her, his face paling. "What was that?"

Without a word, Maya broke into a sprint.

Subject 0011 stumbled after her, his breath catching in his throat. "Wait—0017A—!"

She didn't stop. Her bare feet pounded against the earth. Branches whipped against her face, thorns scraped at her arms but she didn't slow down.

The sounds grew louder, a cry of pain, the sickening crunch of something heavy striking flesh.

The clearing before her was chaos.

Subject 0014 stood at the center, his broad shoulders heaving, his fists clenched.

His uniform was torn, his face streaked with blood and dirt. He was swinging a thick branch at something massive, something that moved with terrifying speed.

A SERPENT.

But not like the one Maya had faced before.

This one was larger—far larger. Its body was thicker than her own waist, its scales a deep, mottled green that seemed to shift and ripple in the dim light.

Its head rose above 0014's shoulders, its forked tongue flickering in the air like a whip.

And it had two heads.

Maya's blood ran cold.

Subject 0004 was crouched near the edge of the clearing, his face pale. He was injured—blood seeped from a gash on his arm.

Subject 0002 lay motionless on the ground a few feet away. Her face was pale, her eyes closed and a dark bruise was already forming across her temple.

A heavy blow to the head, she was unconscious.

The serpent struck, its two heads moving in perfect synchronicity. One lunged toward Subject 0014, its jaws snapping with bone-crushing force.

He barely managed to dodge, throwing himself to the side.

The other head whipped around, its golden eyes fixing on Subject 0004. It lunged, its massive body coiling with terrifying speed.

Subject 0004 raised his arm, trying to defend himself. The serpent's jaws closed around his forearm and he let out a sharp cry of pain.

Maya didn't think. She moved.

Subject 0011's eyes went wide. "What, Subject 0017A, wait—!"

But she was already gone. She burst into the clearing, her small body moving with a speed that seemed impossible.

The serpent's two heads turned toward her, its golden eyes fixing on the new threat.

The serpent's two heads turned as one, their golden eyes fixing on Subject 0004. He was still on the ground, his injured arm hanging limp, his face pale with pain and exhaustion.

The creature lunged.

Subject 0004 tried to raise his arm to defend himself, but he was too slow. The serpent's massive head slammed into his chest, hurling him backward.

His body struck the ground with a sickening thud, and he lay still, his breath knocked from his lungs.

The serpent's heads rose, its attention shifting. Its golden eyes locked onto Subject 0002's unconscious body, lying defenseless on the floor.

The serpent coiled, its massive body tensing as it prepared to strike. It was going to kill her.

Maya burst forward, her small body hurtling across the clearing with a speed that seemed impossible.

She reached Subject 0002 just as the serpent's head lunged downward, its jaws wide, its fangs glistening with venom.

Maya threw herself forward, her body crashing into Subject 0002's unconscious form. She wrapped her arms around the older girl, her small frame shielding her from the serpent's attack.

They rolled together, there body twisting to absorb the impact as they tumbled across the forest floor.

The serpent's jaws snapped shut inches from where Subject 0002 had been lying, its fangs scraping against the earth.

Maya came to a stop, her body pressed protectively over Subject 0002's. Her chest was heaving, her heart pounding so loudly she could barely hear anything else.

Subject 0002 stirred beneath her, a faint groan escaping her lips. Her eyes fluttered, but they didn't open.

Maya looked up. The serpent's two heads were rising again, its golden eyes blazing with fury. It had missed its target.

It was angry. It began to move toward them.

Subject 0011 had already reached Subject 0004's side. His face was pale, his hands trembling, but he didn't run.

He grabbed a thick, A gnarled root, holding it in front of him like a shield.

He positioned himself between the serpent and Subject 0004's injured body. His legs were shaking, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps, but he didn't move.

His voice cracked as he spoke, but he forced the words out anyway: "You're not... you're not going to hurt him. Not while I'm standing here."

The serpent's two heads turned toward him, its golden eyes fixing on the trembling boy who dared to stand in its way.

It let out a low, rumbling hiss—a sound that seemed to vibrate through the very earth.

Subject 0011's grip on the root tightened. His knuckles were white, his entire body trembling with fear, but he held his ground.

The serpent struck.

Its massive head shot forward, jaws wide, aimed directly at Subject 0011's throat. He raised the root, swinging it with all his strength.

The root struck the its head, deflecting the attack just enough to save his life but the force of the blow sent him stumbling backward, his feet slipping on the damp earth.

The serpent's second head lunged, its jaws closing around the root. It tore it from Subject 0011's grasp, hurling it aside like a twig.

Subject 0011 fell to his knees, his face pale, his eyes wide with terror. He had nothing left. No weapon. No defense.

The serpent's heads rose, its golden eyes blazing with triumph. It had won.

The serpent's two heads lunged forward in perfect unison, their golden eyes locked on their targets—Maya and Subject 0011.

Time seemed to slow.

Maya saw the massive head hurtling toward her, jaws wide, fangs glistening with venom.

She threw herself to the side, her body twisting in midair, her feet scraping against the earth as she barely avoided the creature's attack.

The serpent's head crashed into the ground where she had been standing, its jaws snapping shut on empty air.

Maya rolled, scrambling to her feet. Her chest was heaving, her heart pounding so loudly she could barely hear anything else.

She turned, her eyes searching for Subject 0011. And then she saw him.

The serpent's other head was bearing down on Subject 0011, its massive jaws wide, its golden eyes blazing with cold, predatory triumph.

Subject 0011 was frozen, his face pale, his eyes wide with terror. He had accepted it.

Maya saw it in his posture, in the way his shoulders sagged, in the way his hands fell limp at his sides.

He had stopped struggling.

He had accepted that this was the end.The serpent's jaws were inches from Subject 0011's face.

He could feel the hot breath of the creature washing over him, could smell the stench of death on its breath.

And then—something shifted.

Subject 0011's eyes snapped into focus.

He had been ready to die. He had accepted it, embraced it, welcomed it as an end to the endless suffering, the endless fear, endless pain.

But something inside him snapped.

A cold fury surged through her veins, burning away the fear.

It was a rage he had never felt before—raw, primal and utterly consuming.

Why should I accept this? Why should I just let myself die? I've survived for so long. I've fought for so long. And now I'm just going to let it end like this?

NO.

His hands moved before his mind could catch up. His fingers closed around the sharpened stone—

The one Maya had given him the night before. The one she had spent hours shaping, sharpening, preparing.

The serpent's head was inches from his face, its jaws opening wide, ready to consume him.

Subject 0011 lunged forward. He acted on pure instinct, pure fury, pure, unyielding will.

The sharpened stone drove deep into the serpent's eye.

The creature let out a deafening hiss, a sound of pure agony that seemed to shake.

Its head snapped back, its body thrashing wildly as it tried to dislodge the weapon embedded in its eye.

Subject 0011 was thrown backward, his body slamming against the ground.

But he didn't let go. He held on to the stone, his fingers gripping it with a strength he didn't know he possessed.

The serpent's body convulsed, its heads thrashing wildly. It was blinded in one eye, its movements erratic and uncontrolled.

Subject 0011 rose to his feet, his chest heaving, his face streaked with blood and dirt. The stone was still clutched in his hand, stained with the creature's dark ichor.

He looked at the serpent, at the chaos it was causing, at the pain it had inflicted on them all.

And then he spoke, his voice steady—carrying a weight that hadn't been there before.

"After all this time. After everything you've taken from me, my childhood, my freedom, my hope— you think I'm just going to lie down and let you take my life too?"

Maya's eyes fixed on Subject 0011. She had never seen him like this. Never seen the fire burning in his eyes.

Subject 0011 stared at the serpent,

"I'm done running. "

The serpent's body convulsed, its two heads thrashing wildly.

Its massive body coiled and uncoiled, slamming against the trees, tearing through the undergrowth with mindless fury.

Maya's dark eyes fixed on the creature's thrashing form. Her mind was racing, searching for a way to end this.

Subject 0011's face streaked with blood and dirt, the jagged stone still clutched in his hand.

Maya turned to look at him. Their eyes met.

No words were spoken. None were needed.

They moved as one.

Maya darted forward, her small body closing the distance between them.

Subject 0011 followed, his feet pounding against the earth. They reached the serpent's massive body just as it convulsed.

Maya grabbed a thick, gnarled root that had been torn from the earth. Her eyes swept across the serpent's body, searching.

Then she found them. "Together," she said. Her voice was quiet but carried a certainty that cut through the chaos.

Subject 0011 nodded.

Maya leapt forward, her body hurtling through the air. Her fingers closed around the serpent's left head, gripping its scales with all her strength.

The creature let out a deafening hiss, its body thrashing wildly as it tried to throw her off but Maya held on.

Subject 0011 followed a heartbeat later, his body slamming into the serpent's right head.

He drove the jagged stone into the creature's already wounded eye, twisting it with all his might.

The serpent let out a shriek of pure agony, its body convulsing violently. Maya felt the creature's massive form shifting beneath her, trying to throw them off.

She tightened her grip on the serpent's head, her small fingers digging into its scales. She had nothing left but her determination.

She reached for the branch she had wedged into the serpent's body earlier, pulling it free.

The jagged end was slick with blood. She raised it above her head, her eyes fixed on the creature's skull.

She brought the branch down. The jagged end pierced the serpent's skull with a sickening crack.

The creature's body convulsed one final time—a violent, shuddering spasm that sent them both flying.

Maya hit the ground hard, the impact driving the breath from her lungs. She lay there for a moment.

Subject 0011 crashed down beside her, his body rolling across the earth before coming to a stop.

The world tilted sideways.

Maya felt the ground rushing up to meet her. She tried to catch herself, tried to force her body to obey but her limbs had turned to lead.

She hit the ground. Hard.

The impact sent a jolt of pain through her body but it was distant, muffled.

She could hear sounds— footsteps, the rustle of leaves but they seemed to come from very far away.

She tried to open her eyes. The world was a blur of green and grey. She could make out shapes, but they were indistinct, shifting, like shadows in deep water.

A figure appeared above her, dark hair. A face she recognized. Subject 0004.

He was kneeling beside her, his injured arm hanging limp at his side. His face was pale, beaded with sweat, but his eyes were fixed on her with an intensity that cut through the fog.

He reached out, his fingers pressing against her neck.

For a long moment, he didn't move. His fingers remained pressed against her throat, his expression unreadable.

He let out a breath.

Subject 0011 collapsed onto his knees beside Maya's unconscious form.

His face was streaked with blood and dirt, his glasses askew, his chest heaving with exhaustion.

"Is she... is she alive?"

"She's alive, her pulse is weak, but it's there."

Subject 0011 let out a shaky breath, his shoulders sagging with relief.

Subject 0014 was already moving, his broad frame crossing the clearing with surprising speed.

He reached Subject 0002's side, crouching down beside her unconscious body.

"Does anyone have water?"

Subject 0004 reached for the small pouch at his side, pulling out a leather canteen. He tossed it across the clearing. Subject 0014 caught it with one hand, his movements surprisingly quick.

He uncapped the canteen, his fingers moving with practiced efficiency.

He tilted Subject 0002's head back gently, bringing the canteen to her lips. A few drops of water trickled into her mouth.

Subject 0002's eyelids fluttered. A low groan escaped her lips, her brow furrowing as consciousness slowly returned.

"Come on," Subject 0014 murmured. "Come on, wake up. You're not allowed to die. "

Subject 0002's eyes opened. They were unfocused at first, her gaze drifting across the clearing before finally settling on Subject 0014's face.

"You're alive. That's good."

Subject 0002 tried to push herself upright, her hand flying to her head. A hiss of pain escaped her lips.

"Easy," Subject 0014 said, "You took a hit to the head. A bad one."

Subject 0002's gaze moved past him, scanning the clearing.

She saw Subject 0004 kneeling beside Maya's unconscious form, his face pale, Subject 0011 crouched beside them, his expression a mixture of exhaustion and relief.

THE SERPENT.

Its massive body lay in the center of the clearing, lifeless and still. Its two heads were motionless, its golden eyes dim.

Subject 0002 stared at it for a moment, her mind struggling to process what she was seeing. "How? How did we—"

Subject 0014 shook his head slowly, a look of awe crossing his face.

"Subject 0017 and Subject 0011. They climbed onto its back and drove weapons into its eyes."

Subject 0002's gaze snapped to Maya's unconscious form.

She stared at the small girl lying motionless her mind struggling to reconcile the image with the words she had just heard.

"She... she did that?"

"Yes."

Subject 0004 rose to his feet. He looked around the clearing, his eyes scanning the treeline.

"We can't stay here, The serpent's body will attract other predators. We need to move."

Subject 0014 nodded, his expression grim. "He's right. We need to find shelter."

Subject 0002 pushed herself to her feet, swaying slightly. Subject 0014 reached out to steady her, his hand gripping her arm.

"I can walk. I'm not dead yet."

"Subject 0004," Subject 0014 said. "Can you carry her?"

"I... I can try."

He carefully slid his arms beneath Maya's small body, lifting her gently. She was light—lighter than she should have been.

He cradled her against his chest, her head resting against his shoulder.

Subject 0014 turned to Subject 0002. "We need to move. Now."

The group began to move, their steps slow and unsteady. They made their way through the forest.

Subject 0004 walked at the center of the group, Maya cradled in his arms. His steps were careful as though he was carrying something precious.

Subject 0011 walked beside him, his eyes scanning the treeline. Subject 0014 followed behind, his broad frame shielding them from any threat that might emerge from the shadows.

Subject 0002 walked at the rear.

The forest grew darker around them. The last traces of amber light faded from the sky, swallowed by the deep blackness of night.

Then —

They saw A Cave, its entrance half-hidden by a curtain of hanging vines.

Subject 0004 stopped, "This could work. It's defensible. We can block the entrance with branches."

Subject 0014 stepped forward, pushing aside the vines to peer inside. The cave was small. The floor was covered with soft, dry leaves and the walls were solid rock.

"Safe. "

Subject 0004 carried Maya into the cave. He lowered her onto the soft leaves, his hands moving with a tenderness that surprised even him.

The others filed into the cave, their bodies sagging with exhaustion. They settled onto the ground, their backs against the cool stone walls.

Subject 0002's vision slowly focusing on the dim, shadowed ceiling of the cave. Her head throbbed with a dull, persistent ache.

She pushed herself up slowly, her hand flying to her forehead as a wave of dizziness washed over her.

A low groan escaped her lips but she forced herself to sit upright. Her sharp eyes swept across the cave, taking in the scene.

Subject 0014 was sitting a few feet away, his back against the cave wall, his broad shoulders slumped with exhaustion.

He looked up as she moved, his eyes widening with concern.

"Whoa—easy there," he said, pushing himself to his feet. "You need to rest."

Subject 0002 ignored him. She reached out, gripping his arm with surprising strength. "Help me up, I need to see Subject 0017 A."

Subject 0014 hesitated, "She's resting. Subject 0011 is watching over her."

"Did I ask what he was doing? I need to see her. Now."

Subject 0014 let out a low sigh but he reached down and wrapped his arm around Subject 0002's waist, helping her to her feet.

She swayed slightly, her hand pressing against the cave wall for support.

She took a moment to steady herself, her sharp eyes fixed on Maya's motionless form.

She knelt beside Maya, her gaze moving across the small girl's body.

Her fingers pressed against Maya's temples, checking for swelling. Her hands moved down, checking her pulse, her breathing.

She turned to Subject 0014, "The plants I collected earlier—the ones I gathered near the stream. Where are they?"

"I have them," he said, reaching into his pouch and pulling out a bundle of dried leaves and stems. "I held onto them."

"These will help, I can make a poultice for her wounds. It won't heal her completely, but it will prevent infection and speed up the recovery."

Subject 0011 watched her, his brow furrowed. "You know how to do that?"

"I studied medicinal plants during my time in Code Red. I know which ones heal, which ones kill, and which ones just make you wish you were dead."

Subject 0014 opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked at her with a new respect. "That's... really useful."

Subject 0002 let out a low snort. "I'm not just a pretty face."

Subject 0014 let out a low chuckle. "Trust me, no one's ever accused you of that."

Subject 0002 shot him a sharp look,

"Subject 0017 A doesn't have much time,

A few more hours without treatment and she'll be flying up to meet the Creator himself. "

The cave fell silent.

Subject 0011's hands stopped shaking— from shock. Subject 0004 looked down at the child in his arms as if seeing her weight for the first time.

Even Subject 0014 forgot the joke forming on his lips. Until that moment, Maya had seemed indestructible.

Now she looked painfully small.

"And I don't think any of you want to explain to Instructor how we let the most valuable subject in the facility die from a preventable infection."

Subject 0014 blinked, his mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air. "I—I didn't mean—"

"Then don't stand there looking like a confused ox."

Subject 0002 snapped, her fingers already working on crushing the leaves into a paste. "Fetch me some clean water. And find a flat stone I can use to grind these herbs."

Subject 0014 scrambled to obey, his broad frame moving with surprising speed.

He returned moments later, a flat, smooth stone clutched in one hand and a container of water in the other.

Subject 0002 took them without a word, her focus entirely on the task at hand.

Her hands moved with practiced efficiency, grinding the leaves into a fine paste, mixing them with a few drops of water until a thick, green poultice began to form.
