Chapter 1: "He Never Lied"

Part 9

---

🕳 NIGHT – SOMEWHERE BETWEEN FRAMES

The city smelled like old fire and rusted wires.

Shohan stood in a phone booth no one used anymore — the kind that still required coins. He dropped one in. It hissed, sparked, and then clicked.

> "You have a name?" the voice on the other end asked. Hollow Sons code-voice, digitized and cold.

Shohan hesitated.

The name was in his mouth.

It burned.

> "Say it," the voice said. "Or walk back into the light and die like a romantic."

He closed his eyes.

> "Zunaid Haq."

Silence.

Then a quiet laugh. "Your contact at Silver Maw. Trusted inner council. You sure?"

Shohan's jaw was tight.

Zunaid had once given him a place to sleep. A safehouse. Even said Shohan had a future.

> "I'm sure."

The line went dead.

---

🔥 6 HOURS LATER — SECTOR 4

Zunaid Haq was dead.

Throat slit.

Eye gouged.

A Hollow coin placed gently on his tongue.

Silver Maw went silent for four hours — then erupted.

Shootouts in four districts.

Frame runners going rogue.

Paranoia leaked like acid through every corridor of power.

And behind it all: one name.

Shohan.

Though no one could prove it. Not yet.

---

🧠 ANSHA — AFTERMATH

She stared at him. Red-eyed. Unblinking.

> "You gave up Zunaid."

> "I had to."

> "He trusted you."

> "He was a loose thread. The Maw would've found him anyway."

> "He wasn't just a thread," she snapped.

"He was the only one who vouched for you. And now he's a corpse."

Shohan stood by the window, arms crossed.

> "I did what the city trained me to do. You survive by calculating cost. Zunaid's death bought us five more days."

> "And what happens after that?"

Shohan didn't answer.

---

🧒 RAFI — WATCHING

He wasn't asleep.

He wasn't a child anymore, either.

He listened from behind the curtain, hands clenched, heart beating like a trapped bird.

> "I thought he was the good one," Rafi whispered to himself.

---

🕶 FRAME TOWER — ELSEWHERE

Jashim.

Naila.

Razeeb.

They met in secret. Not publicly. Not officially.

But all of them said the same thing:

> "Shohan's dangerous."

> "He's not just surviving. He's building something."

> "What?"

> "A city without us."

And the worst part?

No one could stop him.

Because no one could predict him.

📓 SHO'S PRIVATE JOURNAL (UNSENT)

> I killed someone I respected today. Didn't hesitate. That scares me more than anything else.

> Ansha looks at me like I'm bleeding from the eyes. Maybe I am. Maybe I don't care anymore.

> I said I was doing this for the kid. But maybe I'm just doing this to prove I'm smarter than everyone else.

> If I don't make it out of this, let them remember one thing.

> I never lied.
