Chapter Text

"Should we name them now, or when they've grown a bit into themself?"

The second egg had hatched much quicker than Galene's on account of being kept in magical fire near constantly. Though Harry was still convinced even this breed of dragon likely needed heat for the eggs to hatch, he was unwilling to risk cooking a hatchling alive and so had filled the fireplace with Hermione's famous bluebell flames, which even a human could hold in their hand without burning themselves. It was the best way he could think of to provide the egg with a permanent stream of strong magic without him having to be on hand to cast spells at all times, and though the ambient magic he had pumped into the walls of the manor had obviously been enough for Galene, Harry thought more active and direct magic could only help.

So it was on Day 312, a little over a month after the egg had been brought within the wards that the hatchling within began breaking its way out. Within an hour, Harry and Galene were welcoming a new dragon whose scales matched their egg perfectly: a deep forest green that had less of a sheen that Galene's but was by no means dull.

Unlike Galene, this dragon was completely smooth, with no horns or spikes or any other sort of external defences, but build-wise the new dragon looked exactly as Galene had at the time of their hatching - narrow shoulders, lithe body and very bony.

"Who is 'they'?" Galene asked, cocking their head even as their eyes remained on the baby. "There is only one hatchling."

"When you don't know the gender of a being, you can't use he or she, so you use they instead." Harry explained.

The teen dragon - now measuring just a smidge over 2meters long - finally took their attention away from the new arrival to look at him properly.

"What do you mean? The hatchling is male."

Pausing in his ministrations and taking no notice when the hatchling began to gnaw on his finger, Harry turned his head with his mouth wide open.

"Wha- How do you know?"

"I can smell it. He is male."

"Huh."

He turned his attention back to the hatchling and watched as it - he - did his best to eat his fingers. Thankfully, they had been prepared for the hatching and Harry had quickly fried up some wyvern strips while the dragon had been fighting with his egg. He gently placed the bowl of meat before the dragon and smiled when he squeaked in excitement and almost threw himself at the food.

"Hang on, so what's your gender?"

Galene blinked at him. "I'm female." They - she - said. Her nostrils twitched in amusement. "Have you been thinking of me as 'they' all this time?"

"Yes!"

"Hmmpf."

"Why didn't you say anything?!"

Her shoulders rolled in an imitation of a shrug. Harry didn't think that was a natural dragon move but well, what could you expect when her only influence was a human? They were bound to pick up some traits from each other.

"I forget you can't smell like me. I thought you knew."

That was fair. Over time, Harry had found he often forgot Galene wasn't human and vice versa, considering they shared so much in common - intelligence, language and lethality just to name a few. He decided to drop the subject and take advantage of the hatchling's distraction to take his measurements.

Upon closer inspection, the green wasn't as identical to Galene has he had thought. He was slightly smaller in length than she had been at 29.7cm, though it seemed the main reason for that was the tail. Galene's tail had always been an exact third of the length of her body, whereas the hatchling's was a little shorter. Not a noticeable difference for now, but Harry expected it would become more apparent as he grew. Galene's tail fit her body type perfectly, accentuating her litheness and assisting with her speed and agility in the air. Harry expected the hatchling would grow to be bulkier than her.

Of course, that was just a guess based on very slight differences. He had nowhere near enough experience or knowledge with this breed of dragon to predict these things with certainty.

"So naming him?" Harry asked again.

"Maybe we wait a little longer?"

Waiting it was.

The hatchling was a little hellion.

If he remembered right, Galene had been about the same at this age - scurrying about to explore everything within reach with no regard to obstacles or valuables. Thankfully, anything breakable had long since been spelled unbreakable, and the dragon was far too small to be damaging furniture and the like. Harry's papers however were another matter and after a few times of picking them up off the floor and having to reorganise them, he gave up and just put everything in his office, which he then locked.

It wasn't like he had much time for his studies anyway.

Now though, it was Day 341 and the hatchling had successfully flown for the first time, which meant Harry no longer had to keep him indoors.

It was much easier with Galene to help, he thought. Last time, he'd had to wait until she had her flames before bringing her out so she could protect herself at least a little. Now, Harry didn't have to worry about dividing his attention if something attacked because he knew that Galene would be by the hatchling's side while he flung out curses in their defence. Her help didn't just apply to safety either - she was just as excited about his education as Harry was, following the hatchling around during his many exploration adventures, babbling at all times about what this or that object was and what it did.

She was convinced that if she talked at him enough, he would be speaking before she had, but Harry thought it was less that she couldn't speak and more that she hadn't wanted to. She had started talking in full sentences, after all. Babies didn't do that.

Regardless, it was the first time they'd left the house since the baby hatched, and even longer since the wizard brought his broom out with him.

As Galene got older and stronger, they'd occasionally go out to explore further lands, but more often than not they stayed close by so that she could just stretch her wings. Now though, Harry relished in the wind in his hair as he followed a squeaking hatchling while Galene flew in circles around them, showing off with loops and plunges.

If the green dragon had been excitable inside, it was nothing compared to his first flight. He barely stopped his joyful shrieks as he rushed off clumsily to explore the city, flying from roof to roof and occasionally popping his head into tiny cracks. Harry had to help free him a few times when he got stuck.

Already he was showing signs of understanding their words. He would try to crawl through a window and smack his tail against the ground when Harry called him back, or he'd shriek at Galene when she told him to fly closer to the ground, but he always did as he was told. He was just really grumpy about it; and then he'd extract revenge on them some point later once they'd forgotten he was annoyed in the first place.

"What do you think about Loki?" Harry asked as Galene and he were resting on the steps of what had once been a fountain, watching the hatchling try his best at climbing the massive structure.

She cocked her head. "Loki?"

"God of Mischief."

Smoke curled out of her nose and she glared up at the hatchling.

"Agreed."

Soon enough, Day 365 arrived and the little family got to experience their very first birthday party.

Loki had a good enough grasp on Parseltongue now that Harry had spent over an hour the day before explaining exactly what a birthday was and what they could do for Galene while he had listened seriously and squeaked his agreement once Harry was done.

They started the day with flying, all three of them together, and Loki was kind enough to not wonder off. In fact, he stuck to Galene's side as much as he could, trying to copy her movements in the air and not even getting a little bit frustrated with her when she failed to explain a certain move clearly. Loki was obviously taking this birthday business seriously.

Then, once back at the manor, Harry revealed the feast he had prepared the night before.

Having only 2 different types of meats had forced Harry to become quite creative with his cooking. Meat roasted, fried, grilled and stewed; potatoes mashed, boiled, baked, fried and steamed; and sauces made from any one of the crops in the garden.

For Galene's birthday, he'd gone all out: Wyvern in mushroom sauce, stewed in rabbit broth or marinated in ginger and shrivelfig; roast rabbit, fried rabbit cervelle, rabbit tartare or fried rabbit leg in ginger sauce; all along with some veggies and potatoes for himself of course.

Then come the gifts.

When Loki had come back from his explorations the day before with various rocks and jewels in his claws and yammered at him insistently while looking between Galene and Harry, the wizard understood that this mismatch of stones was meant to be a gift. Harry had spent the rest of the afternoon avoiding Galene's curious looks as he followed the demanding hatchlings vague instructions on how everything was meant to go together. What they ended up with was a strange type of mosaic that actually looked quite nice if he turned his head a bit to the side.

Galene loved it. Upon being presented with her gift she had pounced on the tiny dragon and proceeded to rub her horny head all over the poor thing, rumbling deep in her throat even as he squeaked in protest.

Harry added a hook to the back of the art piece and told her she could put it wherever she wanted.

From Harry, Galene got her very own journal along with a Dictaquill he had spelled himself so that she could begin her own scientific projects.

The rest of the night was spent with the blue teen dragon - a one year old teenager, Harry despaired - prancing all over the place jumping from one project idea to another while Loki and Harry watched in tired solidarity.

"Can you lift your head a little, please?"

"Yes, father."

Today was the now established 100-day sketching ritual. Loki stood on the desk, perfectly still despite the slightly uncomfortable position Harry had him in - his neck stretched and head held high, his tail pointing straight out behind him and his wings slightly flared to show as much of the dragon as possible.

Just like Galene, Loki's form had begun refining itself by now, showing signs of what he would grow to look like. Harry had been right when the green dragon had first been born: Loki's tail was indeed shorter than his sister's had been and the difference was more visible as time passed on. His tail was thicker, his shoulders and hunches broader, and though he did have the two horns at the top of his head like Galene, he had twin frills running down his neck and spine, all the way to the tip of his tail.

He would be a bulky dragon once he reached adulthood, built for power.

Perhaps it's because of his bulk that Loki was growing slower than Galene, only 72.6cm compared to her 88cm at that age - a fact which infuriated the hatchling to no end.

In a fit of competitiveness, Loki began speaking as much as he could. He couldn't say much yet - a lot of 'yes', 'no' and 'why' - but he was determined to master Parseltongue quicker than Galene had. Harry didn't share his theory that Galene was capable of speaking much sooner than she actually had and the older dragon says nothing either. He thought they exchange amused glances though when Loki would get smug when he mastered a new word, though.

The sketching was one of many rituals the family had made for themselves. In their need to document everything about their breed, they'd decided on three observation sketches per dragon, marking childhood at 100 days, adolescence probably around 2 years, and adulthood maybe around 10 years. Harry wasn't quite set on the latter two - Galene was already a teen but Harry thought they still had a good while before adulthood, and he didn't want the sketches to be timed too closely together.

He looked forward to sketching his kids' future forms.

"Father?"

"Yes, Loki?" Harry scowled at the page. He was at a particularly tough spot on the wings and couldn't figure out the shading needed to show everything accurately.

"When brother-sister?"

Harry looked up. "When will we hatch you another sibling?"

"Yes."

Over by the window, at her own desk, Galene's attention turned toward them. They hadn't discussed hatching any other eggs, but it was like they had silently decided on it anyway. Galene was fully aware that on Day 359, once Loki had produced his first flame, Harry had spent hours scouring the manors of the city, collecting all the eggs he could into Hermione's pouch and moving them to a nearby cellar; far enough that they wouldn't be touched by magic but close enough that they'd be easy to reach when the time to hatch more came.

"How about once you've got a full grasp on speaking?" Harry offered carefully, aware of the blue dragon's tail swishing from side to side. Sometimes, when she was very focused, she could come across as very predatory Harry found. He felt like she was hunting him as she observed their conversation.

"Yes. Soon." Loki said smugly, his head somehow lifting even higher.

"Soon." Harry laughed.

Artemis was the first multicoloured dragon Harry had seen unless you count the horns and spikes (pearly white for Galene and a lighter shade of green for Loki). It wasn't not a surprise of course, Harry had learned after handling so many eggs that the dragon reflects the egg perfectly, so when he picked out the pale silver and black egg, he had known the hatchling wouldn't just be one colour like its siblings. It wasn't the only multi-coloured egg either, in fact most of them seemed to be a mix of two different colours.

But Artemis' colours showed such a contrast, with a body of the palest shimmering silver and wing membranes of the darkest black. She looked so much like the moon in the night's sky that Harry didn't even wait to name her, he did it as soon as she popped out of the shell.

She was also larger than both Galene and Loki had been at their hatching at a whole 36.1cm long.

"Hello Artemis. Little sister." Loki crooned, and it's probably the softest Harry had ever heard him.

The hatchling meeped at him and fell against Galene's snout.

"What now?"

Galene was too busy purring at her new sister so Harry answered: "She's been fed and measured so she'll likely sleep for a while. Once she wakes up she'll be running all over the place exploring."

"She just hatched! What does she need more sleep for?"

"Hatching is tiring business." Harry grinned at the green dragon who looked on sceptically. The wizard was proven right though when the little she-dragon passed out right on Galene's face not five minutes later.

As the days pass, Loki proved to be an even more attentive sibling than Galene had been. Artemis was just as excitable as the two before her, but she was also extremely clingy, and would randomly insist on being carried at the drop of a hat; Loki was always the first to volunteer. At 1meter on Day 527 (7 months old), Loki was still a slow grower, but he was big and bulky enough to carry the tiny hatchling around wherever she wanted to go.

He lectured her on proper fire safety as he went, explaining that Harry got upset when his papers got ruined because he was doing important work, and he showed her all the best hiding spots for hide-and-seek, and he made sure she knew to stay away from tiny hidden cracks in the wall because she would get stuck and it would take them ages to find her as small as she was. Harry didn't even know if Artemis understood him yet, but she clearly liked the sound of his voice because she listened intently with her head perpetually cocked to the side.

Galene on the other hand was a silent observer. She had spent enough time doting over Loki that she was now willing to let him do the same with their newest sister; she was a constant presence though, always watching, waiting for Artemis to fall or get stuck, and then she was swooping in to help.

Harry hardly had to do anything.

Night times were always dedicated to story time, and Harry always took advantage to hold his newest child close as he told her stories Loki and Galene had heard time and again, about his own adventures as a child fighting basilisks and sneaking around Hogwarts. Judging by the noises she made, Artemis was just as delighted as Loki had been to know that her father was also a troublemaker.

He was starting to learn that the dragons of this species all evolve differently, development-wise. Artemis grew quickly, but her first milestones took longer to reach - she learnt to fly at 52 days old, over three weeks later than Loki, and her first flame came a week later. At least she didn't seem to be competitive as far as Harry could tell, unlike Loki.

Physically too, each of the dragons were different. The wizard didn't want to make any observations on Artemis' body type yet, but her external defences were coming in and they seemed just as unique as the others - with a horn growing out of her snout like a rhino and a small cluster of spikes at the tip of her tail, all in black. There was nothing on her spine just yet, but when he ran his hand along the length of her back, Harry could feel pronounced ridges; he didn't know if they would stay subdermal or if they would grow into spikes later.

All in all, his studies into this new breed of dragon were going well, and he had plenty of help from his children who were all eager to share their observations - those who could talk at least. The exciting part of it all was that it looked like his studies would never be finished! With each dragon coming out differently, it was like each one was a different breed altogether, with new sketches and observations to make with each one.

Harry is looking forward to the future.

"She's growing faster than me." Loki observed sullenly.

While the green dragon had a healthy rivalry with his oldest sister which can sometimes result in growls and smoke, that was not at all the case with the youngest. Loki held Artemis closely to his heart and considered her accomplishments to be his, despite his growing dissatisfaction at his own development. He'd argue with Galene over anything, but for Artemis he made sure she never knows of his jealousy.

"Size isn't everything."

"That's easy for you to say." Loki snapped, and Harry raised his eyebrow, his book long forgotten.

"I'm human Loki, I'm done growing. You'll be my height in a year and based on the dragon skeletons in the city, you'll never stop growing. Your size has nothing to do with your ability."

The dragon growled and Harry thought that if he were human he'd be stomping his foot.

They watched the girls fly above them and Harry pondered on Artemis' strange growth. It was true that she was growing fast, faster than even Galene. She had got some time to make up for so she hadn't quite reached Loki's modest 1.6meters, but she would soon and she was only 4 months old. In a year she'll have caught up with her sister. It wasn't just her length that was impressive but her bulk too. Harry had first thought that she'd be a speedster like her sister: long and thin, but no. Artemis had bulk to rival Loki's and he was built like a tank.

"Size isn't everything."

"You've said." Came the kid's waspish response.

"What I mean," Harry continued wryly. "is that there are other things to measure yourself on. You were the first to speak. The first to fly and the first to breath fire." Loki finally relaxes his frown and turns to his father. "Those are all great accomplishments."

"That's true." The dragon agreed reluctantly.

"What you need to remember, though, is that those things aren't what make you you. You aren't loved because you were the fastest to speak, you are loved because of who you are. Your personality." Harry stared intently at his son, and he was relieved to find that Loki seemed to be taking his words seriously. "You are fierce, and loving and protective, and serious and responsible. You'll be having more siblings soon, and probably more after that. One day one of those hatchlings might accomplish something faster than you did. Are you going to think yourself lesser when that happens? Is a dragon only worth something if they're the best?"

Loki didn't answer and instead returned his attention to his sisters above, but Harry could see he was deep in thought so left him be.

One day, far in the future, there will be dozens of dragons in the sky. All with different colourings and body types, all with different interests and talents, all with different personalities, all of them Harry's children - or maybe grandchildren, who knows; Galene was approaching adulthood, she might want to adopt one of the eggs - and Harry couldn't bear the thought of any of them not liking what they saw in themselves. He'd had enough of that in his childhood.

Dudley had better things than him, Hermione was smarter than him, Ron was better at chess than him, Dean was better at art... it seemed everyone was better than Harry in some way, the only thing he ever had pride in was Quidditch. It took him a long time to understand that what mattered was personality. Kindness, bravery, dedication, loyalty, morals - those where the things that made you who you were, those were the things people should take pride in.

His first son was one fine dragon. Galene was the curious one, Artemis the sweet one and Loki was the serious one. The one that reminded everyone that they had to sleep when they were too entrenched in their research, the one that always knew where everyone was. Loki was a big brother.

"I think I understand, father." He finally said.

"So you'll stop being so harsh on yourself?"

"I'll try."

"Water is easy you see, it boils at just 100 degrees. Rock is much harder, and it depends on the type of rock too!"

Harry listened absently as Galene explained the results of her very first project to Artemis, who was watching with rapt attention as the blue dragon presented multiple different rocks and lectured her on their differences.

That first experiment just after his oldest turned one had been a source of pride for Harry. Not just because it was her first, but because she'd realised half way through that she'd prefer to have a project that she could do on her own rather than rely on him and his magic for measurements and the like, but she kept on with it in the name of discovery. Knowing more about their fire was always a worthy interest for dragons, after all it took energy to make fire, and the hotter it was the more energy was needed. Galene had been disappointed when she realised she needed Harry to tell her the exact temperature of her fire, but had deemed the subject important enough to continue with it.

Now, she gave lectures to her siblings once their fire became strong enough.

Loki, having gone through this very same lesson before, had gone off to explore on his own, leaving Harry to watch over the twins by himself. Thankfully they were young yet and hadn't been flying long, so they wouldn't make it far even if they did decide to one day disengage from their playful wrestling.

They'd gone as a family to the nest to pick out an egg together just before Galene turned two. When Artemis insisted on a purple and Galene insisted on a pink and neither were willing to budge, Harry decided that raising Artemis with the help of older siblings had been easy enough to justify hatching two dragons at once this time. He wasn't disappointed.

As rambunctious as baby dragons were, Eros and Juno had three older siblings all eager to help with the responsibility of raising them, and they were rarely left unattended at any one time, even while Harry and his children had ample spare time to enjoy their hobbies.

Galene was still focused on her science projects, though now she was focusing on the familial relation between dragons, wyverns and fireworms. Harry sincerely hoped she found none, because he'd been feeding the children wyvern since they were born and the dragons had all acquired a taste for fireworm since Galene's first hunt. Harry himself hadn't tried any as his tests indicated it would be toxic to him, but the children reported the creature to be spicy. Hopefully, the three races were completely unrelated and Harry had not accidentally turned his children into some kind of cannibals.

Loki was big on exploration these days. He was strong and sturdy enough that Harry didn't ask him to wait until he reached a certain size before going off alone - which created an argument over fairness with Galene in which Harry had to remind her that he allowed her out alone before the 3 years he had originally stated - and he'd begun flying in various directions to discover what was out there. He remained cautious, though. Considering the sea to the south was a boiling death trap, Loki stayed well inland, investigating the mountains and valleys to the north and west.

Artemis, when not hounding Galene for lessons, was obsessed with mosaics. She had taken one look at her sister's birthday present and decided then and there that that was what she wanted to do forever. She was still young, so Harry was sceptical on that last part, but so far she'd stuck with it and Harry's office's walls were covered in various pieces and differing sizes. Her latest work was a large black backdrop with two vaguely egg-shaped blobs of pink and purple; she'd even included the secondary colours of gold and white. Her brother and sister.

He looked forward to seeing what his newest hatchlings would get up to, but there was time before that. It was in fact almost time for their 100 day portrait.

Hatching them together had been a good idea. As close as all the dragons were to each other - even Loki and Galene who argued all the time, these two were inseparable. Not quite twins, Juno having hatched two days before Eros, they were still the same size and strength and therefore could go all-out during their play, unlike their siblings. It was never more apparent how breakable babies were than when one of them was stood next to Galene, who was now 4.28meter long and 1.73meters tall. His daughter was taller than him! In comparison, the hatchlings were small enough to be stepped on.

As if to remind him of their fragility, Juno let out a squeak as Eros batted her head with his wing, and proceeded to lose her strenuous control of her flight. Harry sighed and pulled his wand out.

Notes:

Breakdown of the dragons in order of age:

Galene - a bright and gleaming light blue with pearly horns (2 at the top of the head and 2 from the side of her head), lithe. Female

Loki - deep forest green with pale green horns (2 at the top of the head) and frills, stout and bulky. Male

Artemis - pale silver with black wing membranes and a black horn (between the nostrils) and tail spikes, large and bulky. Female

Juno - dark gleaming purple with white wing membranes, tail tip, horns (top of the head) and tail spikes, medium build. Female

Eros - dark pink with golden frills and wing tips and white spikes (like a collar around the base of the skull), lithe. Male
