Harry's Guide to Raising Dragons and Nobles

Chapter 2: Chapter 2
Chapter Text
The hatchling did not outgrow him in two weeks. It barely grew at all, in fact, just a couple of inches. It became apparent that caring for this dragon until it was self-sufficient enough to survive alone would not actually be a short term thing.
"Why won't you grow?" Harry lamented while the hatchling stared at him.
Was he doing something wrong? Was there something he should have been providing that the dragon wasn't getting? This surely wasn't normal! Hagrid said dragons grew quickly!
On the bright side though, the dragon hadn't been a nuisance. It hadn't set anything on fire, it hadn't even made any fire at all, and of course with small size came the possibility of Harry manhandling it when it misbehaved without grievous injury to himself.
The most dangerous thing about this dragon, Harry thought, was its cries, because every time the thing opened its mouth and let out one of those little kitten noises, Harry was ready to drop everything and come running. It was the isolation, he told himself. He was desperate for company, it must have been almost a year since he'd had any interaction with anyone, so now he had a sort-of pet/child to care for, the madness had taken over.
Having the baby... things changed. Harry started counting the days again, because it was important to record the baby's progress. On Day 2 (the first day Harry had the presence of mind to actually start recording), the hatchling had measured 30.4cm from snout to the tip of its tail. On Day 17, it now measured 36.2cm. He started a journal. As far as he could tell this was a brand new breed of dragon, so he should ensure he recorded everything. He wasn't a scientist, but still. He marked down growth, diet, food intake and behavioural patterns.
It was Day 23 before it occurred to him to name the hatchling, but then he hit a snag when he realised he didn't know its gender. So he spent a few hours coaxing and manhandling the dragon into staying still so he could try and find out. He gave up eventually, certain there was no outward sign of gender on this breed. He noted it down. Still, the dragon needed a name, so - something gender neutral?
"Poseidon sounds distinctly male." Harry commented, his eyes narrows in concentration. Around him was seemingly half the Black library and the hatchling was perched on the sofa back behind him, watching intently. "What about Nereus? He was also a guy, but it sounds more neutral, don't you think? Then again that might be because he's less well known." Huffing, he turned another page. "Amphitrite is a no - too female. Kymopoleia?" He asked the hatchling, but it just looked back at him blankly.
Name after name, some of which he had to read the short description for as he'd never heard them before, but not once did the hatchling react. With scales so blue, Harry wanted to name it something in relation to the sea, and what better to name a dragon after than a god? Or a nymph or any of the other sea related mythological figures. But he was quickly running out of options.
"Galene?"
Finally, although Harry didn't know if it was approval or boredom, the baby reacted by pouncing on his head. "Galene it is."
Now that they had a name, Galene seemed to recognise when they were being spoken to or called. Harry often caught them stopping and listening to him when he talked. He didn't know if they could understand what he was saying, but they seemed curious at least and they obeyed simple requests like 'no' and 'don't eat that'.
Despite the colouring, Galene perhaps wasn't such a fitting name after all. In Greek mythology, Galene was the goddess of calm waters. With scales of blue that reminded of sandy beaches and warm waters, it was perfect, but in terms of temperament... Galene the dragon was always up to something. No matter how much they'd explored, they were already ready for more. The only reason Harry felt comfortable letting them outside was because the fence links of the livestock pens were too tight for them to fit through and because they hadn't leant how to fly yet.
That changed on Day 32, and Harry had to accioan excitable dragon before they disappeared forever. Galene wasn't allowed out after that, at least not until their fire and their claws came in a little more. Thankfully, the new world of flight quickly distracted them from their unhappiness at being restricted, and before long the hatchling was exploring the rafters and high ceilings. At least it kept them occupied and Harry was free to return to his experiments with runes.
He was hoping to make a portable bubble-head ward. He'd already carved the necessary runes into the walls around his home and farm, but they were stationary. Apparently, the runes didn't like being moved, because anytime he tried to put them on a necklace, it didn't work. According to his guide books, the main issue was the material, but he'd tried almost all he could think of Runes on stone only worked if the stone was anchored to the ground, just as the runework would be. Wood didn't seem to work at all, marble had taken a lot of effort and didn't work either, and the ragged and tired cloth used to make the carpets and other artworks didn't even bear considering.
On Day 40, it occurred to Harry to try live wood. Wood from the fig tree in the garden, rather than the wood that had been cut down centuries ago to make the furniture. Incidentally, it was also the day Galene made their first flame, which distracted Harry well enough that he completely forgot about his epiphany in favour of not only putting out the fire, but also calming a highly alarmed hatchling.
Days were never boring with Galene around.
Galene slowed down eventually. One day they seemed to decide that they had explored all they could possibly explore around the house, and since they were still not allowed out without supervision, the dragon took to following Harry around. On Day 70, Galene still only measured 70.1cm and Harry had given up on following the written expectations. Galene was growing steadily and that' was all that mattered, and they were not too big that they bothered Harry when they decided to follow him constantly, so all in all Harry was satisfied. It made no sense, but Galene was a new breed, so he'd learnt to change his expectations around a little bit.
At first, Harry didn't really change his routine. He cared for the farm while Galene watched from a distance, head cocked every time he did something new. He read his books and Galene snoozed beside him, their head twitching in his direction whenever he spoke. He went out to the wilderness, which was something he'd brought the dragon along for since they had their flames, and they always stayed within sight.
Harry always lectured the hatchling on safety and the dangers of the outside before they went out, and after a few weeks of the routine Galene would stand and watch him seriously as he lectured them, letting out a little puff of smoke once he was done.
"Outside is dangerous." He said. "There are creatures bigger than you and bigger than me. There are creatures that can hide and fly and dig, and all of them will eat us if we don't watch out. My magic will keep us safe, but you have to stay close enough for me to see you, Galene. I can't keep you safe if I don't know where you are. Do you understand?" Galene's throat rumbled in response and he got his usual puff of smoke to the face.
While out, the dragon stretched their wings. The good thing about no trees was that Galene could fly as high as they liked and still be in sight as promised. Harry always watched carefully, taking note of any new manoeuvres they managed and how long they stayed in the air without having to rest their wings for his journal. There was also maybe a little bit of pride, he thought. He watched them fly, their lithe blue body cutting through the air with such grace and he thought his child was doing well.
Maybe he wasn't so in above his head after all.
After a while of Galene sticking by his side though, Harry decided to spend less time with his stuffy books and more time out in the wilderness.
It was good for them to fly, to stretch their wings and learn of the world they lived in, but they weren't yet big enough that he was comfortable letting them out alone. Maybe, with more exercise the dragon would grow faster. They would grow stronger at least, after all practice makes perfect and that must be true for dragons too. They would never be able to fly far if they didn't train, so Harry took them out every day instead of every week. Not to mention that Galene would likely be too big to be sustained only on the wyverns and rabbits that Harry farmed eventually, so they learned to hunt too.
He watched them explore the great outdoors and learn new flying tricks while he picked samples to bring home and experiment on, just like he had with those animals all those months ago. He was unlikely to do anything with the results - afterall, even if he found something valuable like gold, it wasn't like he could use it - but it was something to pass the time while Galene explores.
As the weeks passed and Galene flew more and more, their body began to change in more than just length, and Harry took advantage of their new closeness to sketch her. He wasn't very good at it, but he had all the time in the world and unlimited pencils and erasers, so even with little practice and countless mistakes, it came out perfect.
More than just size, Galene's shape was changing slowly. Where at birth they were just a scaly little lizard with no meat on their bones, on Day 103 Galene measured 87.9cm. Their tail took up a third of their length and although they remained lean and serpentine, Harry noticed a definite bulking of the shoulders and neck, which was likely due to all the flying exercises.
One change that was unlikely to be a result of extra flying time however, was the face. All of Galene's horns and spikes had been growing as expected along with the rest of the dragon's body, but there was now a new pair of spikes starting to grow out of their cheekbones. Eventually, Harry thought they would grow long enough to protect the base of their skull, just like the horns on the top of their head would. Galene's head also sloped gently towards their snout, which had elongated, and their skull was likely now closer to a horse's than a canine's as it had been when they hatched.
There were likely to be more changes as they grew further, but this was a good mark for a first sketch. He was likely to draw them again when they reached adolescence and then adulthood, but this was a good point to mark childhood. Old enough that there were already some markers he imagined were unique to Galene, but young enough to not have completely come into their body shape.
He spoke as he drew, describing what he was doing, explaining why, narrating his process. He told his hatchling about Dean, who could make the most complicated of scenes come alive in moments with just a few strokes of his pen. Sometimes he would add colour, but it was never needed because he was so talented that any image would be perfect even in black and white. Harry fetched his own colours and did his best to render his sketch to life like Dean used to while Galene settled in beside him.
Galene listened to him intently all the while.
As time passes, Harry revisited the issue of how Galene's egg hatched with no fire. He had kept the shell safe so he could experiment with it one day, and finally Harry decided that day had come.
These days, Galene preferred sleeping whenever they weren't outside, but they roused themself when they saw Harry carrying the bright blue eggshells to his lab. At 1.20meters on day 165, Harry was a little more reluctant to let them into his highly disorganized research area, but he always caved when seeing their face. Galene was admittedly a very expressive dragon, even without the growls and the kitten mewls.
"Do not touch anything." He ordered sternly, as he always did. Galene didn't seem to mind the constant repetitive lectures. "This is all very important work, so no fire, and no prancing about. Understood?"
The dragon let out their habitual puff of smoke that Harry took as an agreement, and they got to work.
It took days, and Galene tired of the silence and lack of attention before long. Harry made sure to keep the door to the lab open so that the dragon could come and go as they please, and the only thing that could pull him from his research was Galene's teeth pulling at his clothes - a sure sign it was time to go out and fly.
Research being his foremost pastime since his arrival in this land, Harry had decidedly gotten quite good at it.
After rearranging his library five times, he finally knew it backwards and forwards, and barely spent any time at all searching for magical texts and guides. He'd mastered multiple rituals and in fact had a desk dedicated entirely to that, inscribed with a rune sequence for each ritual necessary, from cleansing to diagnosing to simulating. He now had a whole process for it.
First, he used the simulation ritual, which created a holographic picture of the item within the ritual space at eye level, and allowed manual manipulation. The method was inspired by an Iron Man film Harry had seen parts of once at the Dursleys' and had taken ages to create, but Harry had gotten his worth from it. The ritual allowed him to not only observe any item from any angle, but also allowed him to peel back the layers of the hologram to observe the insides. Very useful when studying the local fauna.
With the egg pieces, Harry could see that there were three distinct layers: the hard outer shell, a softer, more leathery inner shell, and then what was left of a viscous liquid which had long since dried out. Nothing overly surprising or informative really, although the inner shell wasn't something he'd seen before.
Next came the diagnosing, which when used in conjunction with the simulation, would allow Harry to select a specific part of the item, and would tell him what the purpose of it was by making of of the many inscribed runes light up. The outer shell for example was obvious and when selected made the protection rune glow. The inner shell however, made the sustenance rune light up, which was unexpected. The viscous liquid was what fed the baby before hatching, this leather-like layer seemed completely irrelevant to nutrition.
And there came the mystery. This second inner layer of the egg was providing needed nutrition to the unborn dragon within, but not of the food variety - no, that was what the liquid did. So, what did the inner shell provide and how did it provide it after years of death?
Harry returned to his books for an answer, but found none - which actually wasn't surprising since Galene had nothing similar about them than any of the other dragon breeds he knew of. Clearly, different world meant different dragons.
It was actually Galene that gave him the answer. He knew they were deeply attuned to his magic. Anytime they went out and Harry cast a spell, even silently, Galene would be by his side in a moment even if they were just a speck in the sky when the spell was cast. Every time Harry got his wand out at home, Galene would perk up, and anytime they passed the wards they would purr.
So facts: 1- Galene's egg remained dead and unhatched for God knows how long before he got here, only to start coming back to life within weeks and hatching within nine months of his arrival. 2- There were no other dragons alive in this land even though he had seen eggs in other houses' cellars when he went looking 3- Galene was deeply attuned to magic and could sense it being used.
Clearly, it was him, or rather his magic, which had caused the egg to hatch. There was no other reason for Galene to have hatched when they did, and there was no other reason for Galene being the only egg to have hatched.
The dragons here fed on magic, and his presence fed the inner shell of a dragon egg, which in turn fed the dragon.
Day 201 began like any other. Harry tended to his flock and culled a few for eating before he returned to care for the crops, and then Galene and he left for some flight time. He'd begun bringing some books with him to pass the time as Galene was now strong enough to fly for hours on end, but they were still too small for him to let them go alone at only 1.37meters. The dragon was strong, and their fire was definitely lethal, but so were fireworms and they were over ten times Galene's size. Honestly it would probably be another year before Harry was willing to let Galene go.
It was strange, thinking back. When the baby had first hatched he couldn't wait to get rid of them, thinking they'd grow into a vicious, uncontrollable beast within weeks. Not only did Galene grow more slowly than expected, but they were a lot more docile. Obviously, a dragon was definitely a weapon of mass destruction, those claws, teeth and horns weren't just for show, not to mention the fire, but it seemed to Harry that Galene knew who he was, knew he was caring for them, and understood him to some degree.
They followed his rules, they never flew out of sight, never set anything at home on fire and never messed up his many papers and journals in the lab. That didn't mean Galene didn't growl, or smack their tail against the floor or furniture at times, but ultimately, his kid was well behaved.
The reason for that quickly became clear.
"Father."
Harry dropped his book and gaped at the dragon that had just landed beside him.
"What?"
"What were you reading?"
"You can speak?" Harry squeaked.
Galene cocked their head to the side.
"Of course."
"Wha- How long have you been able to speak?!"
The dragon's wings trembled and shuffled and how had Harry never noticed how much that looked like a shrug before?
"I don't know, this is my first time trying." They stared at him as if waiting for a response, and Harry just stared back, still lost in surprise. "What were you reading?"
"Wait, how long have you been able to understand me?" Harry insisted, because this was important! Dragons didn't speak! But then again, dragons didn't eat cooked meat and grow at a snail's pace and feed on magic. Besides, this was Parseltongue, maybe - did he ever try speaking to the Horntail or the Gringotts dragon? He didn't think so. Maybe dragons did speak.
"A long time."
Harry threw his hands up in the air. The dragon could speak but asking for some clear answers was clearly beyond their capability.
"What were you reading?"
"Oh my - it's just a history of runes invention, it's nothing - I was just passing time while you flew."
Galene lowered their head to sniff at the book on the ground. "Runes are the signs you carve everywhere?"
"Well, not everywhere but - yes."
It was strange - obviously everything about this was strange, but beyond the sheer impossibility of dragons speaking, it was strange that Harry could hear the same dragon noises coming from Galene even when they spoke. So far, the dragon had only ever growled, purred, screeched or roared, and even now that Galene was actually speaking Parseltongue, Harry could still hear a rumbling growl in the back of their throat as they spoke.
"Are you done flying?" He asked, and Galene let out a puff of smoke he had come to learn meant yes. God, they'd been understanding his words for months!
As Harry gathered his book and Galene took flight so they could make their way home, Harry figure this was just one more madness to add to the list. His dragon child could speak, so what? If anything, he was sure it would make life easier.
With the new discovery of Galene being able to speak, a whole lot changed.
First of all, as far as his studies went, he now had a lot more to put into his dragon journal. He could actually ask questions and get an answer, and once Galene started speaking, they hardly ever stopped, so he found he had a lot to add as far as the behavioural observations go.
Then, there was the change to their schedule. It turned out that Galene loved books, so Harry had a set story time every evening where he read to them. Considering the size of the Black library and Galene's interests, they would be at this for years. Their favourite so far was the Three Brothers, but that might just be because it was his favourite. It was never so apparent before they started speaking how much of a child they still are. Galene had made it clear that they see him as a father and look up to him greatly.
It also changed something within Harry. He'd been speaking to Galene since before they were even hatched, but having them speak back is a breath-taking relief. He no longer had a long life of silence and loneliness ahead of him, he no longer had decades of boredom and madness ahead. He now had Galene, who would one day grow large enough to fly away, but he knew they'd come back, and they'd talk for days and weeks about their adventures. Imagine it - he could spend hours on his experiments, and then hours more talking about them!
It was life changing.
With that childish curiosity, Galene was always happy to hear about the latest interesting thing he read, or what project he would work on next or about his studies into this new dragon breed. And Harry would always be eager to listen to Galene tell him about the things they saw while flying high up.
They work on a map together. It wasn't very expansive of course, with Galene not being able to fly far, but they made up for it in detail. They even threw ideas around about what the place might have looked like before whatever nuclear phenomenon happened, and before long their map turned into drawings and paintings that showed a land bustling with life.
Galene felt even more like his child now. Before, he had been responsible for their safety and health, but now he was also teaching. And it was hard to not consider the dragon his child when they called him 'father'.
"When do you think I'll be big enough to fight a fireworm?" Galene asked, and Harry was reminded of the times he had thought them docile. The dragon was bloodthirsty, they just hid it well behind obedience and good behaviour.
"At the rate you're growing, probably at least two years."
Galene puffed up in indignation, which was a funny sight on a dragon. Their neck straightened and they stood at full hight, their tail pointed straight behind them and their wings were trembling. There was even a little smoke coming out their nostrils.
"But I am 223 days old! I am big!" They objected, and Harry couldn't help but huff in amusement.
"You are 1.48meters. The fireworm was at least 12meters and I have no idea if it was young for its species or not."
"So you don't know if it was big for its species either!"
Harry knelt down to look the dragon in the eye, because this was important and they might have been a creature of death and despair, but from what he'd seen of fireworms they weren't helpless either and at this point, Harry didn't know what he'd do if Galene got hurt.
"You are growing a little bit faster every week." He said seriously. "Even still, in two years time you will be at most 6meters long. Half the size of the fireworm I saw. The only reason I'm even allowing the possibility of it in two years is because you will have claws and wings, which the worm does not. Not to mention, by then you'll be too big for me to stop you."
He bopped them in the nose and watched as they shook their head before standing and returning to his work in skinning the rabbit. He took no notice of Galene's lack of response as he worked, but then -
"I'll never do anything you tell me not to." They declared. "Even when I'm too big for you to stop me."
Looking down, Harry was surprised to find Galene with the most serious and sincere expression he'd ever seen on them. They were standing straight and stiff, staring him straight in the eye with a clenched jaw. They must have seen his bafflement at the announcement because their tail twitched and they continued:
"You remade me when I was dead." They said earnestly. "You gave me magic to hatch, and you give me safety and love to grow every day. We know little of my ancestors, but I know I am the luckiest of my breed because none can claim to have had you."
Mouth parting in surprise, Harry had to take moment to recalibrate his brain.
He'd seen Galene as his own child for a while now. His to protect, his to raise and educate, his to make happy; but he'd never thought his behaviour towards the dragon would have engendered such devotion. They were his child, and he was their father. They had no one but themselves and that had an effect on their bond; he knew based on the few engraved accountings he'd found in the city that the relationship between the people and dragons that lived here before the waste had been less of a familial bond and more of a owner and volatile pet situation - affectionate, but with definite undertones of possession and ownership.
Harry had always found Galene endearing, but once he realised they could speak and had human-comparable intelligence, it was inevitable that he consider them somewhat human-adjacent and therefore to be treated as such.
"Galene..." He murmured. He'd never intended to create this sort of loyalty in them. Kneeling once more, Harry placed a hand at the base of the dragon's skull, just behind their side spikes. "You are my joy," he confessed. "and my life would have been much duller if I hadn't accidentally caused you to hatch. But you don't owe me anything for it. Your existence isn't a debt you have to repay me, especially not with obedience. I definitely appreciate you following my rules and requests," he smiled wryly, thinking of all the chaos there would have been if Galene disregarded everything he said. "but one day you'll grow, and you'll be old enough to make decisions for yourself and set your own rules. Even if they disagree with mine."
They stared at each other for a while, and Harry thought this might be the first time they were so overt with their affection for one another. Their bond was always clear in the way Harry always made time to read the dragon stories, or Galene shared with him all the things they saw that they thought might interest him, and in how they each were so free with their touches, but neither of them had any said anything out loud.
Once Galene nodded - although Harry didn't believe they were agreeing with him so much as they were telling him they understood - and Harry returned to his rabbit.
"Did you have to make up your own rules when you stopped being a hatchling?" The dragon asked, and by now they were hanging off the ceiling rafters and watching him work upside down.
"I did, although that time coincided with my arrival here so I would have had to make my own rules regardless of if I was ready or not. Sometimes I made mistakes, but that comes with being an adult: you have the freedom to set your own rules, but the consequences are completely on your shoulders."
"I like your rules. They make sense."
Harry smiled. "I'm glad."
Having no one but each other, Harry and Galene obviously talked a lot. Or rather, Harry talked a lot, and Galene asked questions. How else were they to learn?
The dragon knew of Harry's life in his birth world, they knew of his relatives and his friends and his adventures. They knew of the strange phenomenon that brought him here, they knew he had feared for his future sanity before their egg had hatched. The pair talked of the land they were in and theorised about what it had been like before death had come, using the limited knowledge they had gleaned by inspecting the ruins of the city.
Once, this place had been bustling with life. With men and dragons, the rich and the poor, the smiths and the farmers. Children would have played with their bonded hatchlings in the streets and the fields, and the adults would have rode their grown dragons far and wide for trade, war and pleasure. Galene would have hatched for one of them, and they would have loved their bonded dearly even if obedience was demanded because they never would have had a Harry to teach them.
Once, Harry would have become a man with his friends by his side. He would have picked a life vocation and would have married and had a family. He would have been safe in the knowledge that he knew all he had to know to survive and be happy, and he never would have had to learn the deeper magics of rituals and runic arrays.
Instead, they were here, Galene had Harry to teach them of happiness and freedom, and Harry had Galene to adopt as his own and his library to sate his newly found curiosity, even if the city was dead and Harry had lost his friends.
But they didn't have to be alone.
Galene brought forth the idea of hatching more eggs on Day 272. Harry choked on his mushroom stew.
They discussed it on and off, sometimes not mentioning the idea for days at a time - it's not like there was any rush.
It was something Harry actually seriously considered. Cellars weren't something he'd really bothered to investigate all that much other than to check a few houses to see if Galene's egg was the only one. He'd found that all of the manor houses he'd checked (which was 12 out of perhaps a good hundred) had at least one egg, and some had up to five, so presumably there was the possibility of hatching a lot of dragons. Obviously though, no one was saying they should hatch them all, just - maybe a few.
Together, they wrote it all out:
Arguments for:
- They were lonely, even if they had one another
- Galene deserved others of her race. If Harry could have some humans here, he'd bring them in a heart beat but that's not an option. There's no such restriction on the dragons
- Everything in this land was a vicious death monster, having more well balanced and well behaved creatures might lift the mood a bit
- Eventually, there will be enough large dragons to guarantee safety for when they decide to explore further from the city
Arguments against:
- Harry couldn't raise a bunch of dragons by himself
- It would be inconvenient to resize the livestock pens to account for the increased need for meat
- Intelligence did not guarantee benevolence. Dragons are armoured, fire-breathing predators with many sharp pointy bits that can grow to massive sizes and neither of them want a murder-dragon on the loose
- Having baby dragons that can't be left alone for long periods of time means less outdoor excursions
Resigned to his growing madness, Harry fetches another egg.
