CHAPTER 31: THE TOWER'S WHISPER
The morning after the battle was unusually quiet.
For the first time in weeks, no visions attacked Nolan the moment he opened his eyes. No golden flames burst from his right eye. No distant voice whispered through his mind.
Yet somehow, that silence felt worse.
Nolan sat alone near the edge of the floating island, staring into the endless abyss below. His right eye remained closed beneath a cloth bandage.
The limiter mark on his arm glowed faintly.
Shen approached and sat beside him.
Neither spoke for a while.
Finally, Nolan broke the silence.
"Do you think I'll become him?"
Shen already knew who he meant.
General Veyl.
The future version of Nolan.
The monster waiting somewhere ahead.
"I don't know," Shen answered honestly.
Nolan laughed bitterly.
"At least you're honest."
A cold wind swept across the island.
Far away, Ryulga watched them from atop a massive stone pillar.
His expression was unusually serious.
Because he had seen it too.
The future was beginning to move.
And the Tower had awakened.
---
Later that day, training resumed.
Ryulga stood before Shen and Nolan with his arms crossed.
"You both survived."
Shen rolled his eyes.
"Is that supposed to be praise?"
"No."
Ryulga pointed toward the horizon.
Dark clouds were gathering in the distance.
The sky itself seemed fractured.
"Your next lesson begins now."
Nolan frowned.
"What lesson?"
Ryulga's grin returned.
"Finding the Tower."
Silence.
Shen immediately stood.
"The Tower from Nolan's vision?"
Ryulga nodded.
"The same one."
Nolan's expression darkened.
The image remained burned into his memory.
A black tower.
Seven floors.
Ancient doors.
And something waiting at the top.
Something even General Veyl feared.
"What is it?" Nolan asked.
Ryulga's smile vanished.
"The place where Mediators are judged."
The answer sent a chill through both boys.
---
That night, neither of them slept well.
Shen sat awake near the campfire.
His shadows moved strangely.
Normally they obeyed him.
Now they seemed restless.
Almost alive.
One shadow slowly stretched across the ground.
Then another.
Then another.
Shen frowned.
"What are you doing?"
The darkness paused.
For a brief second, he thought he heard a whisper.
Not words.
Just a voice.
Ancient.
Distant.
Watching.
The shadows immediately returned to normal.
Shen stared at them.
Uneasy.
---
Meanwhile, Nolan's sleep was far worse.
The dream returned.
He stood before the black Tower once more.
This time the gates were open.
Darkness waited beyond them.
A single figure stood near the entrance.
Not Veyl.
Not Ryulga.
Someone else.
A man cloaked entirely in shadow.
His face could not be seen.
Yet Nolan somehow felt the figure staring directly at him.
Then the stranger spoke.
"You're late."
Nolan stepped backward.
"Who are you?"
The figure ignored the question.
Instead, he raised one hand and pointed upward.
Toward the highest floor of the Tower.
"The seal is weakening."
The dream began to crack apart.
The Tower trembled.
The sky shattered.
And before Nolan woke up, he heard one final sentence.
"Tell the Mediator he does not have much time."
---
Nolan jolted awake.
Sweat covered his body.
His breathing was uneven.
The sun had not risen yet.
Shen was already awake.
The moment he saw Nolan's face, he knew something had happened.
"What did you see?"
Nolan hesitated.
Then he told him everything.
Every detail.
Every word.
Every warning.
When he finished, the camp had become completely silent.
Even Ryulga looked thoughtful.
Which worried Shen more than anything.
Because Ryulga almost never looked worried.
Finally, Ryulga stood.
"Pack your things."
Shen blinked.
"That's it?"
"That's it."
Nolan frowned.
"Where are we going?"
Ryulga pointed toward the distant horizon.
Toward the gathering darkness.
Toward the place where reality itself seemed torn apart.
His grin slowly returned.
"To the Tower."
Far beyond the floating islands...
Something ancient opened its eyes.
And for the first time in centuries...
It smiled.
