Chapter 4 - Windows to the Soul

Lydia gulped. His eyes were a blend of dark disturbing colours. His scleras were black with tiny spots glowing like a starry night sky. In the centre of his eyes, a dark red iris circled his pupil. The iris was like a pool of crimson blood around a black hole. It looked like the eye was rotating. She felt drunk and submissive as if she would do anything he would say until he closed his eyes right then.

"Well that's enough of that. I think you've seen enough," said Damian opening his eyes to reveal they reverted back to his usual white sclera and black irises. Lydia sat there frozen. Nothing to say. She finally moved her head to look at Damian's eyes once again.

"What are you?" she said almost horrified. He breathed a sigh while glancing at her. He looked at her and opened his mouth while his eyes glowed once more. His incisors grew sharper but stayed a similar length while his canines elongated and became animalistic. She stared at his teeth and moved her hand close to them before he pulled away covering his mouth. When he turned to her again, he looked normal.

"What do you think I am, Lydia," he asked awaiting her answer. You could hear him swallow his saliva and his hands rubbing against each other in anxiety. He got up from his crouching position and took a step back. "Well?" he asked once more. She remained silent. He smiled at her and continued, "I'll tell you what I am. Some called us sanguophage or Strigoi. Others called us Lamia, Moroi, Upir or Mullo. Jiangshi, vetalas or dhampir." She paused. She could tell where he was going with this. Before everything that happened this sophomore year, she probably would've scoffed or just screamed but something drew her in. She wanted to know more after the attacks and her hospital visit. She wanted to know where Scott got his incredible boost from. She needed to know why Jackson was pissed at her for being immune. She wanted to know it all. She breathed in and said,

"So what am I then?"

"I thought you'd never ask."

Scott left Deaton's clinic after waiting for the hunters to go. A new supernatural creature in Beacon Hills had emerged and he already had his hands full juggling hiding his relationship, trying to keep his grades up and lying to half the people he cared about. It's also supposedly a killing machine and can paralyze a hunter without them being able to retaliate. Scott took a few deep breaths and waited at the spot that he and Allison agreed upon before his phone started vibrating. Stiles had texted him something about a mechanic and his jeep as well as to bring the car. Scott had waited long enough, he quickly scratched an apology on a rock and ran off to grab his mom's car and drove down to the address that Stiles had shared with him. He played some music and cruised down the street. Thoughts popped in and out of his head during the drive. Would he survive his sophomore year or would this new unspoken threat along with Derek and his two new betas end his life. Scott kept driving until he had reached the mechanic and his eyes widened when he saw police tape and deputies all over. He parked up and waited for Stiles. Stiles walked down and entered the passenger's seat. Scott asked him if he was okay and was met with a nod.

"This thing, it's not like you. It had reptilian eyes but there was something about it. You know when you see a friend in a halloween mask but all you can see is their eyes? You feel like you know them but you can't figure out who it is."

"What do you mean? Do you know who it is?"

"No. But I think it knew me."

"Lydia what you are is complicated to say the least." said Damian. Lydia rolled her eyes and crossed her arms in front of her. If he thought he could give her these empty answers, he didn't know Lydia Martin.

"You can either tell me or I'll scream." Damian chuckled at her and replied,

"What you are is a banshee, that part isn't complicated at all. The hard part is knowing what you are actually capable of. There many stories about the banshee or the wailing woman but how much of those legends are true is yet to be seen. The only thing I truly know about banshees is that despite popular belief it's what you hear not what you scream that is important." Lydia felt her world spin. She was a death omen. An unlucky charm. She gasped for air as she tried to calm down. "Really the fact that you're a banshee is causing you distress not that you are inches away from a vampire who could drain you dry?" smiled Damian. Lydia felt anchored for a second. This was all ridiculous which made the world feel all the more real. Visions of past events flickered through her mind until a single word escaped her mouth,

"Stiles." Damien's eyes narrowed at the mention of his friend. What did Lydia see for her to talk of him. Damien looked at her being dazed and waved his hands in front of her to get her attention. "Stiles was the one to find me on that lacrosse field and he was the one to save me from him. The man I see in my hallucinations, the burnt man," she whispered. Damien opened his mouth to say something and then closed it again. Lydia turned towards him and asked, "How do I get him out of my head?"

"Wrong question. It's how do you get him out of your blood." he smirked.

Derek had a dilemma. He wanted 4 betas but the Lahey kid didn't smell very human anymore and Scott didn't want to join him. So it's either he sticks with these two or he takes a risk and bites 2 more that he isn't sure about. For now though he had his work set out for him with these two. They can't fight or really even defend themselves even with their new power and he had to make sure that they were at least ready for hunters if not for even more dangerous entities out there. He swats Boyd away before doing the same to Erica. He dodges her attempt straddle him. Her attempts to seduce him were getting very annoying now. He shakes his head and looks at his pack with disappointment.

"I have no idea why you are just sat there, I told you to treat this like life and death. I am not here to teach you how to fight but to survive. The first lesson is if you can't beat them run." he all but shouted. They both nodded. Good, he thought. No smartasses at least. These two may be enough to survive what's coming.

Damian walked to school that day, happy with the progress he had made. Lydia should be fine for now. He watches Stiles, Scott and Allison exchange some form of conversation before he begins to listen in. Words of a bestiary and books bound in leather before he chuckled and moved closer to intervene in their conversation.

"Now why on earth would anyone use an old worn out book bound in leather to write a bestiary in the 21st Century." Stiles and Allison whipped their heads to meet Damian's tall figure. They both began stammering and stuttering to find their words before Damian interjected once again, "It would obviously be digitised and backed up on multiple USB sticks. Why would anyone do otherwise. I mean even geriatrics don't write things anymore." Stiles and Allison both look at each other before they silently agreed on a question.

"How do you know what a bestiary is?" Stiles probed. Damian rolled his eyes,

"The same way I know what an orc is. Fantasy and D&D as well as history. I have no idea why anyone would have need of one anymore but unless this one in particular is too fragile to be copied then it would be digitalised otherwise if it is as old as some other bestiaries, it would fall apart." Stiles and Allison grinned and looked as if they had hit the jackpot while Damian continued, "And if it is digital now then I would have copies on flash drives if I wanted to keep it as safe as possible." Stiles smiled even harder and slapped the shoulder of his new friend and said,

"I am so glad I could count on a nerd like you to know this man." Damian with a deadpan expression stared at Stiles who was wearing a shirt with "May the Force be with you". Allison gestures something to Stiles and he runs off. Damian waves at Allison and she waves back. Hiding his identity seemed incredibly easy and helping them as if he were only a human seemed weirdly fun.

Damian had decided he despised lizards and snakes and all things scaly. He was as fast if not faster as this accursed creature but he just wasn't counting on a surprise attack. He felt horrible. The paralytic toxin had already gotten into his bloodstream and he was rendered useless and even worse he had to fake it for longer to keep his secret because Stiles and that annoying new alpha was in the room with him. He had been there for hours making sure his body was so still, slowing his heart rate and stopping his blood flowing so he could alleviate his own boredom. He had almost had enough before Scott had bumbled his way through and gotten the beast to flee. All he had wanted was to get Stiles to help Lydia, which was something he knew Stiles would do no questions asked. Instead he had been forced to "find out" about the supernatural. He slowly got up when Scott and Stiles looked at him in unison waiting for his reaction. Damian let out a breath and asked,

"What the fuck is going on?"
