Chapter 7 - 6. Garçom

Along with Tame Impala, I walked into a bar here in town. It was empty. I grabbed a chair and sat down, resting my arms on the table.

"Would you like a drink?"

I saw Tame Impala quickly put on a waiter's uniform.

"I think so. What do you have?"

"We have Brahma, Heineken, Skol."

He glanced at me.

"Which one?"

"The one that tastes the least bitter."

"Okay."

And he grabbed a drink with a name I didn't see.

He opened it and poured a little into the glass that was on my table.

Right after, he started asking me questions.

"So, sir, what brings you to this lovely bar?"

I picked up the glass and stared at the shiny liquid inside.

Hesitantly, I took the glass and drank a bit of the drink.

"It's nothing special, just another love story like any other. You must be tired of hearing one of those."

"I'm here to listen… More to drink?"

"More, please." I held out my arm with the glass in my hand for him to fill.

"Well, how can I start…?"

"She and I met at a club. Back then I was a very shy person, I didn't really know how to talk to anyone. Not that that's changed nowadays."

I took a gulp of the drink.

"What else…? Oh, she started the conversation first, as expected. After that we started going out more, it was pretty fun. I was a boy in love and she was also a lovely girl."

"Lovely?"

"Yes, she was affectionate, praised the things I did, motivated me, but everything started going downhill."

"Going downhill?"

"Exactly, it was only when I let my guard down for a while that she showed her true face. She wasn't a bad person, but she acted like one. She ended up stopping with the compliments, the shows of affection, etc."

"She left you feeling needy, then."

"If it were just that it would be bad, yeah, but it wouldn't be so annoying. What I mean is that she was 'cold.'"

"Cold?"

"Yes, cold. Very cranky."

"I see. Well, would you like more to drink?"

"Sure."

I drank everything in the glass and handed it to him to refill.

"To tell you the truth, sir. That happened to me too."

"Really?"

"Yes, the difference is that she was going to get married."

"Married?"

"Yes. We started out just as lovers but I fell in love over time, only one day she sent me a letter saying her family had arranged a marriage for her. I was devastated."

"Devastated?"

"Yes, I was devastated. Those were very difficult days."

"I'm sorry."

"No need to be, I'm fine now, even if something inside me really, really wants to explode."

"Okay… Well, if you don't mind, I'm going to drink more now."

And I drank until I passed out, and Tame Impala laid me on the floor like I asked.
