The masked killer advanced slowly, every step deliberate and radiating an unnerving, intimidating aura.
"Damn it, what do we do now?" Elara breathed, her voice shaking despite her grip remaining iron-tight around the hidden knife in her pocket. She glanced at Janice, eyes pleading for a plan.
"They're close enough. I think it's time we drop the act," Janice said calmly. She closed her eyes, snapped her fingers, and let an arrogant smirk curl her lips. "Come and get me, coward!" she shouted, her voice laced with equal parts defiance and frustration.
Suddenly, men in black suits flooded into the alley, blocking both ends completely.
"We've got the numbers now, don't we?" Elara said, a mocking smirk appearing on her face.
"Scatter! Corner them and restrain them at all costs!" Janice commanded authoritatively, adrenaline surging through her veins.
She immediately grabbed Elara's wrist and sprinted toward a limousine waiting just outside the alley entrance.
"Well, well, well… look who we have here…" The masked killer's voice cut through the chaos, low and serious.
"Damn it, they outplayed us! What should we do!" The female accomplice exclaimed, her feigned fear and annoyance perfectly executed.
"Kill them. Then escape," the masked killer replied coldly, shifting instantly into a combat stance. "No one gets in my way."
Inside the limousine...
"It's been a while since you set foot in this limousine," Janice said calmly, gently brushing a stray lock of hair back into place for Elara.
"I wonder what's happening back there. Did they manage to catch or kill those masked killers?" Elara murmured, her voice tight with anxiety. Unease and sorrow clouded her features. "Still... I can't shake the feeling that this isn't over yet."
"We'll wait for reports. I sent twenty men against just two of them," Janice replied in a steady tone, patting Elara's back reassuringly. "But if they win against odds like that, then we are truly dealing with something dangerous."
Elara's thoughts: I still can't believe it. Janice's plan to lure them into that alley was brilliant... I knew it. She really is the key player I need. I've tried and failed so many times before, but Janice? In their very first direct confrontation, she already managed to outmaneuver and anticipate them perfectly...
[FLASHBACK]
Before the two masked killers stepped out to block their path...
"Elara, listen to me," Janice whispered calmly, though her voice carried absolute authority. "I'm certain they know we have a plan by now. The only thing I can think of is that they'll try to launch a surprise attack to throw us off balance."
"Alright, so what should we do? Isn't that dangerous?" Elara asked, her anxiety evident in her trembling voice.
"We are going to let them think they've cornered us," Janice replied, her hands moving deftly to straighten her collar, a gesture of calm preparation. "I already texted my security team and sent them my location tracker. I'm pretty sure they're already tailing us right now. Once those maggots show themselves and think they've got us trapped, I'll give the signal. They intervene, and that's when we make our run for it."
"Are you sure this will work?" Elara clenched her fists, frustration and doubt bubbling up. "For four or five loops now, I've tried everything imaginable, yet I always failed."
Janice looked her straight in the eye. "Different person running the operation, different results. We won't know unless we try. Trust me on this, Elara."
She gave Elara a rare, genuine smile and gently patted her head—a small gesture that instantly soothed her frayed nerves.
[PRESENT]
"I just wish I were as smart as you, Janice," Elara said, forcing a weak smile. "Maybe... if you had been in my situation from the start... Alice wouldn't be gone. You are a genius."
Her voice softened, heavy with emotion. "That's why I thank you. Thank you for believing in me. And I'm sorry... sorry for dragging you into this again, even though I know you don't remember anything from the last loop."
She pulled Janice into a tight, desperate hug.
Janice returned the embrace warmly, placing a gentle kiss on Elara's forehead.
"You are my friend," she whispered softly into Elara's ear, her tone steady and comforting. "I would do anything to keep you safe. And remember—we are different. You have your own strengths that I admire, just as I have mine. You don't have to put yourself down because of this. Just stay true to who you are and do what you do best."
"Thank you, Janice."
Tears welled up in Elara's eyes, blurring her vision, but her heart felt lighter than it had in days.
"We're almost at my house," Janice said calmly, her voice softening to soothe Elara's nerves.
"It's been a while since I last visited your... mansion," Elara drawled sarcastically, giving Janice a playful nudge with her elbow.
"Quit calling it that," Janice replied, feigning annoyance as they stepped out of the car.
"We need to strategize immediately while we wait for my men to report back," Elara said, her tone turning ice-cold. She locked eyes with Janice, burning with absolute determination.
I will avenge Alice, she swore silently to herself. And I will get the hell out of this cycle once and for all.
"Alright. Let's go inside," Janice said firmly.
They walked through the grand entrance and headed straight for Janice's room.
"Let's start planning. I want this over with," Elara said, adrenaline coursing through her veins. She was desperate for the freedom and justice she had fought so hard for.
Internal Monologue (Elara):
I have a terrible feeling this won't end well, but I need to savor every moment. This is the first time I've actually succeeded in getting this far. I have no way of knowing if this success will carry over to the next loop, or if this is just another fleeting moment.
"Alright, so—" Janice began, only to be cut off by a soft, polite knock on the door. She let out a quiet sigh.
"Come in. It's unlocked," Janice said authoritatively, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I apologize for the interruption, Madame," a maid said gently, bowing respectfully.
"Is something the matter, Carlotta?" Janice asked expectantly.
"There is an urgent call waiting for you," the maid replied with grace, carefully handing the phone to Janice.
Elara snatched it immediately, her anxiety spiking. "Hello? What's happening out there? Report!"
"We... we lost them... I couldn't believe it... they... they..." The voice on the other end trembled, broken and terrified, before the line went dead silent.
"I KNEW IT!" Elara roared in frustration, slamming her fist violently onto the table. "They got past your men. They handled them without even getting hurt!"
Tears of rage and helplessness streamed down her face as she clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white.
"What is wrong with this?! No matter what I do, no matter what we try, something always goes wrong! Damn it!"
"Calm down, Elara," Janice said, her voice remaining eerily calm. She placed a hand on her friend's shoulder. "We already prepared for this scenario. We knew there was a chance they would track us here. We are ready for them."
