Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen: The Rumor That Breaks Everything

Alex barely slept.

Her pillow was still damp from the tears she didn't admit she shed. Not because of the drawings. Not because of Chloe. Not even because of Ryan.

But because of Max.

He made everything confusing.

He made everything intense.

He made everything feel real.

And she didn't know if she was ready for that.

By morning, her stomach was in knots.

She walked slowly toward school, dragging her feet. She hoped today would be quiet. Calm. Normal.

But the second she stepped through the school gates, she knew something was wrong.

Everyone was staring.

Not whispering.

Not giggling.

Not side-eyeing.

Staring openly.

Some with curiosity.

Some with pity.

Some with ugly satisfaction.

Alex froze.

She felt exposed, like she had walked into school without clothes.

A girl from her math class walked by and murmured, "I'm sorry."

Sorry?

For what?

Before Alex could ask, a group of boys passed, snickering loudly.

"Guess the school belle isn't so innocent after all."

Alex felt her blood run cold.

She walked faster.

More students stared.

She kept hearing the same words over and over.

"Did you see the photo?"

"It's definitely her."

"I can't believe she'd do that."

"She looks desperate."

Her chest tightened.

Photo?

What photo?

She reached her locker with trembling hands.

And then she saw it.

A printout.

Taped right to her locker.

A blurry picture.

From behind.

Of her and Max walking home the day before.

In the picture, Max's hand was on her back.

But the angle made it look like something much more intimate.

Like they were sneaking off together.

Like she was clinging to him.

Like they were hiding a relationship.

Under the picture was a caption in bold black letters:

SHE PLAYS TWO BOYS AT ONCE.

Alex felt the world tilt.

She tore the paper down, but more students had phones out, scrolling, looking at the image online.

Someone had already posted it to the school group chat.

Someone was spreading it.

Someone wanted to ruin her.

Her breaths grew sharp and uneven. The hallway seemed to spin.

Then—

"Alex."

Max's voice.

She turned around instantly.

He stood only a few feet away, dressed in his usual dark hoodie, backpack slung over one shoulder. But his expression was different today.

Hard.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

He looked like he already knew.

"Come with me," he said.

Before she could react, he gently took her elbow and guided her toward an empty side corridor.

He didn't speak again until they were out of sight.

Then he faced her.

"Did you see the picture?" he asked.

Her voice cracked. "Yes."

"They're spreading it everywhere."

"I know."

Max reached out, like he was going to touch her face, then stopped himself.

"Are you okay?"

"No," she whispered. "I'm not."

And the moment she said it out loud, the tears she had been fighting all morning welled up again.

Max's jaw clenched. His fists tightened at his sides.

"I'm going to find out who did it," he said. "And when I do—"

But Alex shook her head weakly.

"Please… not again. I don't want you fighting because of me."

"This isn't fighting," Max said. "This is protecting what matters."

She blinked.

"What… matters?"

"You," he said simply.

The breath punched out of her chest.

But before she could say anything, another voice rang out sharply from behind them.

"Alex."

Ryan.

Max's entire body tensed instantly.

Ryan walked toward them with a dark, stormy expression. He held his phone in his hand, the picture open on the screen.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Ryan demanded.

Alex wiped her eyes. "Tell you what?"

"That you were… involved with him."

Max stepped in front of her slightly. "She's not involved with anyone."

Ryan ignored him. His gaze stayed locked on Alex.

"I defended you. For years. I stood by you every time a rumor came out. And this is what you do?"

Alex felt like she had been slapped.

"That picture isn't what it looks like," she said. "We were just walking home."

Ryan's voice cracked. "Then why does everyone think you two are hiding something?"

Max stepped closer, tension radiating off him.

"Because they're stupid," Max said. "And you're believing them."

Ryan snapped, "I'm not talking to you."

"Then start listening," Max shot back.

Alex stepped between them desperately. "Please stop. Ryan, it's not true. Any of it."

But Ryan didn't back down.

"Alex," he said, voice low and wounded, "do you like him?"

The question crashed into her like a wave.

Her lips parted.

Her heart hammered.

She didn't know the answer.

Or maybe she did, and she was afraid to say it.

Ryan's face fell as he read the silence.

The hallway behind them began filling with more students peeking around corners, watching the drama unfold.

Ryan looked at the growing crowd, then looked at Alex again.

"This is exactly what Chloe said would happen," he muttered. "That you'd fall for someone dangerous and drag yourself down."

Alex's voice rose sharply. "You told Chloe about us?"

Ryan froze.

Max exhaled slowly. "Of course he did."

Alex felt sick. "Ryan… why would you talk to her about me?"

Ryan ran a shaky hand through his hair.

"I didn't mean to. She asked what was wrong yesterday. I said I was worried about you. She said she wanted to help."

Max let out a humorless laugh. "Chloe doesn't help anyone unless she can benefit from it."

Ryan's voice trembled. "I never thought she'd spread something like this."

Alex felt the betrayal sink deep.

She wasn't just being targeted.

She was being played.

By someone who knew exactly which strings to pull.

Tears rose again.

Max stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"Alex, look at me."

She did.

"You don't deserve this. And you won't face it alone."

Ryan swallowed, expression twisting.

"Max," he said slowly, "stay out of this."

"No," Max replied. "I'm not going anywhere."

Students whispered louder.

Ryan stepped closer, eyes burning. "Alex. Please. Pick. Tell me to stay. Tell me you choose me."

Alex froze.

Max's breath hitched beside her, though he didn't show it on his face.

Ryan continued, voice breaking. "Tell me he means nothing."

Alex felt like she was standing on a cliff edge.

One step toward Ryan.

One step toward Max.

Both roads are dangerous.

Both roads are life-changing.

Students held their breaths.

Waiting.

Watching.

Her voice trembled.

"Ryan… I can't choose right now."

Ryan's face crumbled.

Max stood still, silent, unreadable.

Ryan took a shaky step back.

"Then we're done," he whispered. "Not dating. Not friends. Nothing."

Alex's breath caught in her throat.

He turned and walked into the crowd.

Alex reached out weakly. "Ryan—wait—"

Max gently but firmly caught her wrist.

"No," he said. "Let him go. He doesn't get to hurt you and then demand more."

Alex's voice shook. "He was my best friend."

Max's eyes softened.

"I know."

Alex's tears finally spilled over.

Max didn't hesitate.

He pulled her into him.

Not a tight embrace.

Not a romantic one.

But a steady, grounding one.

His hand rested lightly on the back of her head.

"You're okay," he murmured. "I've got you."

And for the first time all day—

She let herself believe it.
