Chapter 1 - The Beginning of Something Quiet

The first time Lila noticed Ethan Carter, he wasn't doing anything special.

No dramatic entrance. No loud jokes. No reason, really.

He was just… there.

Sitting by the window in the back of math class, sunlight catching in his messy dark hair, one hand lazily spinning a pencil like he didn't care about anything at all.

And maybe that's why she noticed him.

Because everyone else did care.

About grades. About popularity. About being seen.

But Ethan?

He looked like he was in a completely different world.

"Lila?"

She blinked, snapping out of it. "Yeah?"

"You're staring," her best friend Naomi whispered, raising an eyebrow.

"I am not," Lila muttered quickly, looking down at her notebook, even though she definitely was.

Naomi smirked. "Back corner. Window seat. Messy hair. Ring a bell?"

Lila nudged her, cheeks warming. "Stop."

But… she glanced again.

Just for a second.

And somehow—like he felt it—Ethan looked up.

Their eyes met.

It wasn't supposed to be anything.

Just a random moment. Two people accidentally looking at each other.

But something about it felt… longer.

Quieter.

Like the world paused just a little too much.

Then he looked away.

And just like that, it was over.

"Uh-oh," Naomi whispered. "That's dangerous."

"It was nothing," Lila said, maybe a little too fast.

But the strange thing was…

It didn't feel like nothing.

The next few days passed normally.

Or at least, they were supposed to.

But Lila kept noticing things.

Like how Ethan was always late—but never got in trouble. How he never raised his hand—but always got the answers right. How people talked about him, but he never really talked to anyone.

It was like he existed just outside of everything.

And somehow…

That made her notice him even more.

"Okay, I'm calling it," Naomi said at lunch, dropping into the seat across from her. "You have a thing for him."

Lila nearly choked on her drink. "I do not."

"You literally just looked over there again."

"I was not—"

"Lila."

She sighed, giving up. "I'm just… curious, okay?"

Naomi leaned in. "About the most mysterious boy in school?"

Lila rolled her eyes, but smiled a little. "He's not mysterious."

"Then what is he?"

Lila hesitated.

Her eyes drifted across the cafeteria again, landing on him without even trying.

Ethan sat alone, headphones in, staring out the window like he was waiting for something no one else could see.

"I don't know," she admitted softly.

And for some reason…

She wanted to.

She didn't expect anything to happen.

Not really.

People like Ethan Carter didn't just suddenly walk into your life.

They stayed in the background.

Unreachable.

Untouchable.

Safe to wonder about—but never to actually know.

But sometimes…

The quietest beginnings

turn into the loudest endings.

And Lila had no idea yet—

that just one small moment

was about to change everything.
