The moon hung low over Ethren Village, casting shimmering shadows as Kriel glided through the twisted alleys. The night air was brisk, wrapping around him like a cool hug, igniting sparks of excitement in his chest. It had been two weeks since he'd taken on his first target, and the thrill of the hunt had only intensified.
"Yo, Kriel!" yelled a scruffy kid, probably around eleven, as he sprinted toward him with a half-eaten loaf of bread. "Patrol spotted at the eastern gates!" His wide eyes were a mix of awe and dread. "Captain Aric's leading them."
Kriel felt his heart race. "And? What's the sitch with their marks?"
"Six soldiers! But, uh... Aric," the kid stammered, struggling to get his words out. "He's got four marks! I never thought anyone could rack up that many."
A wicked grin spread across Kriel's face, his sharp teeth glinting under the moonlight. "Now we're getting somewhere. What are their powers?"
"Um, one's got Earth Veil, and another's got Water Veil," the kid managed, voice quavering. "But Aric… he has Fire Veil, Light Veil, Shield Veil, and Wind Veil," he gasped, unable to contain his disbelief.
Kriel's heart thumped in anticipation.

"Get somewhere safe," Kriel urged, his tone instantly grave as he faced the reality closing in.
The boy nodded fervently and vanished into the shadows. Kriel took a deep breath, steeling himself for the impending clash. He needed to weaken Aric's crew before confronting the captain.
Suddenly, a shout sliced through the night. "Markless loser! Stop right there!"
Kriel froze. Two patrolmen approached, their marks feebly glowing. One wielded Earth Veil, the other Water Veil – clearly two C-rank nuisances.
"Trouble's been brewing, and you've stepped right into it," the Earth Veil soldier sneered, lifting his hands to conjure rising stone walls around Kriel.
"Seriously? This is your big move?" Kriel chuckled, a mix of amusement and scorn sharpening his edge. "You guys aren't even worth my time."
In a blink, he activated Shadow Step, vanishing just before the stone barrier closed in. He reappeared behind the Earth soldier, gripping his throat in a thrilling rush of exhilaration.

In a heartbeat, it was all over: two bodies lay cold on the ground. Kriel felt all-powerful yet remained alert. Just as he began to soak in his victory, an intense heat wrapped around him, constricting his breath.
"So," a powerful voice boomed, cutting through the tension, "you're the one hunting my guys."
Captain Aric loomed large, his presence warping the very air around them. His marks ignited like scorching coals, radiating unrestrained power.

"Captain," Kriel greeted coolly, trying to maintain cocky bravado as shadows danced around him. "I've been waiting for this."
Aric narrowed his eyes, sizing Kriel up. "You think you can take me down? Just a kid playing with powers he doesn't understand."
Kriel laughed, defiance ringing out into the night. "Kid? Nah, I'm a Void Walker, the predator in this game!"
Aric raised an eyebrow, tension coiling between them like a taut wire. "You've got guts; I'll give you that. But guts won't protect you from me."
Kriel grinned, adrenaline surging. This was the moment he'd longed for. "Let's see just what you've got."
As Aric ignited flames licking his fingertips, the very air crackled with raw tension. "Alright then, brace yourself," the captain growled, unleashing a wave of flames that illuminated the alley in bright colors.
Kriel activated **Shadow Step** again, dodging the fiery assault with killer grace, reappearing behind Aric. He lunged, desperate for victory.
In a swift motion, Aric spun, blocking Kriel's attack with his Shield Veil. The impact sent shockwaves thrumming through Kriel. "Nice moves," Aric huffed, a mix of respect and caution on his face.
"But not good enough," Kriel shot back, power thrumming at his fingertips as he launched another savage attack, void energy surging through him.
"Underestimate me, and it'll be your last mistake!" Aric barked, conjuring a fierce gust of wind that sent Kriel staggering back.
"Is that your best shot?" Kriel retorted, regaining his stance and heart racing. "You really don't grasp how starving I am."
Every clash morphed into a fierce battle of wills fire against shadow, echoing like thunder in the night. The world around them faded; only their combat remained vivid and alive.
"You think you can absorb my marks?" Aric roared, sweat glistening as he narrowly dodged yet another strike.
"I don't think; I know!" Kriel fired back, an exhilarated grin stretching his face as the energy raced through him.
With every strike, he could feel himself growing stronger, the connection to the void tightening, awakening something deep within him that begged for release.
"You've got more fight than I expected," Aric admitted, panting between strikes. "But is it enough?"
"Let's find out if you can keep up!" Kriel yelled, feeling his hunger rise as they engaged in a rapid-fire flurry of attacks, neither willing to back down.
The battle raged on, each combatant pushing their limits, sweat and blood mingling in the night, both prepared to fight until the bitter end.
