Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 The Tainted Threshold

The footsteps did not sound like boots on stone. They sounded like a mountain grinding its teeth.

From the pitch-black fissure between the obsidian doors, a massive claw breached the threshold. It was carved from the same phosphorescent green jade as the door's veins, but thick, oily black miasma bled from deep fractures along the stone limb.

"A Guardian Qilin," Yue whispered, her serene composure shattering. She took a step back, the silver lotus hairpin manifesting in her grip as a short, glowing dagger. "But it's infected. The Shadow Sect didn't just breach the valley—they've poisoned the root of the Gate network."

The beast dragged its bulk into the cavern light. It was the size of a siege wagon, a terrifying amalgamation of a lion's body and a dragon's scaled head, sculpted entirely from spiritual stone. Violet fire, identical to the flames in the scout's hound, burned within its hollow eye sockets.

The moment its gaze swept over Ye Chen, the beast let out a metallic, deafening roar.

"It smells the Key," Ye Chen said, stepping in front of Xiao Mei. His empty right hand clenched into a fist. The cheap iron saber had warped and shattered against Commander Feng's armor. He had no weapon, only the volatile furnace burning behind his ribs.

"It will tear you to pieces!" Yue warned, her silver aura flaring. "Its outer shell is hardened earth Qi. Your raw fire will only bake it stronger. You need my precision to pierce its joints!"

"He needs an anchor, not just a scalpel!" Xiao Mei snapped back.

She didn't retreat to the shadows. She stepped up directly beside Ye Chen, her small hands glowing with the fierce, freezing mist of her untamed Yin. She looked at him, her dark eyes entirely devoid of fear. "You bring the heat, Ye Chen. I'll keep your heart from melting."

Before Yue could argue, the Qilin lunged.

Despite its massive stone bulk, it moved like a cracked whip. The beast cleared the distance in a single bound, its jaws opening to unleash a torrent of black, corrosive flames.

"Split!" Ye Chen roared.

He shoved Xiao Mei to the left, diving to the right as the black fire flash-boiled the shallow pool where they had just stood. The cavern instantly filled with scalding, toxic steam.

Yue vaulted backward into the air, her silver robes billowing. She threw three needles of concentrated lunar Yin. They struck the beast's shoulder joint with sniper-like precision, freezing the corrupted miasma for a fraction of a second.

It wasn't enough. The Qilin shattered the ice with a flex of its muscles, its massive tail whipping around to swat Yue out of the air. She deflected the blow with a hastily conjured silver shield, but the sheer kinetic force sent her crashing hard into the cavern wall.

The beast didn't follow up on the Guardian. Its violet eyes snapped back to the brightest energy source in the room—the green glow pulsing violently in Ye Chen's chest.

It charged.

Ye Chen stood his ground, channeling the Key's power into his right arm until the veins bulged with golden light. But Yue was right; striking solid stone with blunt heat would only shatter his own bones.

Suddenly, a wave of freezing mist washed over his back.

Xiao Mei sprinted up behind him, slamming her palms against his shoulder blades. "Shape it, Ye Chen! Don't just push—focus it to a point!"

Her raw Yin energy flooded into him, cooling the chaotic inferno just enough to give his mind clarity. Instead of a wild explosion, Ye Chen forced the golden Yang down to his fingertips, compressing it until it formed a vibrating, two-foot blade of pure, incandescent Qi extending from his wrist.

The Qilin leaped, its maw wide open to snap him in half.

Ye Chen didn't dodge. Guided by the stabilizing rhythm of Xiao Mei's heartbeat pressed against his back, he drove his arm upward, plunging the golden Qi blade straight into the underside of the beast's jaw, right where the black fractures were thickest.

The heat was absolute. The golden blade pierced the stone, superheating the corrupted miasma trapped inside the beast's throat.

*Crack.*

A web of blinding light spider-webbed across the Qilin's skull. The beast convulsed, letting out a screech that sounded like tearing metal, before its entire head detonated from the inside out.

Chunks of smoking jade and black ash rained down across the cavern. The headless stone body slumped to the floor, sliding to a halt inches from Ye Chen's boots.

Ye Chen dropped to one knee, the Qi blade dispersing into sparks. His chest heaved, his lungs burning, but the agonizing recoil of his power never came. Xiao Mei's cool hands remained on his shoulders, gently siphoning away the excess heat before it could consume his meridians.

"I've got you," she whispered, her forehead resting against his sweat-drenched back. "I'm right here."

Across the cavern, Yue pulled herself out of the rubble, wiping a streak of dust from her pale cheek. Her violet eyes lingered on the two of them—on the seamless, undeniable resonance they shared, built on raw trust rather than ancient technique. A complicated shadow flickered across her gaze before she masked it behind her usual serene detachment.

"Brute force," Yue said coolly, walking toward the shattered beast. "Effective, but reckless. You nearly exhausted your core."

"We survived," Ye Chen replied, getting to his feet and pulling Xiao Mei up with him. He didn't let go of her hand.

The heavy silence of the cavern returned, broken only by the hiss of steam.

But the trial was not over.

With the corrupted Guardian destroyed, the massive obsidian doors groaned again. The green veins along their surface shifted from their tainted black back to a luminous, pure emerald. Slowly, the doors swung inward, revealing the true interior of the First Celestial Gate.

Ye Chen braced himself for a grand temple or a lethal trial arena.

Instead, the light from the threshold illuminated a scene that made the blood freeze in his veins.

Beyond the doors lay a perfect, life-sized replica of his parents' wooden cottage in Willow Creek. But the porch was covered in dried blood, and two figures were suspended in mid-air above the courtyard, wrapped tightly in chains of black fire.

"Mom...?" Ye Chen breathed, the Key in his chest violently surging against his ribs.
