Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 The Crimson Drop

"If you are hearing this, my son, then you have awakened the Key. And you are in terrible danger."

The voice in Ye Chen's mind was weary, laced with the frantic edge of a man running out of time. Ye Chen's fingers clamped around the glowing bamboo slip. The jade in his chest hummed in mournful recognition.

"We did not abandon you," his father's voice continued, echoing through his meridians rather than his ears. "The Shadow Sect found our trail. We had to lead them north, away from Willow Creek. The Key you carry does not just open the Celestial Gates—it is the only thing keeping the Primordial Abyss sealed. Do not trust the Shadow Sect, but beware the Orthodox Grand Sects even more. They will carve the Key from your chest to wield its power. Find the Second Gate in the Ashen Peaks. Survive, Ye Chen."

The bamboo slip crumbled into fine gray ash, slipping through Ye Chen's fingers.

He fell to his knees on the white jade floor. The silence in the circular chamber was deafening. Nineteen years of quiet resentment evaporated in a single breath, replaced by a crushing, terrifying weight. He wasn't abandoned; he was a decoy. His parents had sacrificed their lives to buy him time to grow up in peace.

Xiao Mei dropped to her knees beside him. She didn't ask what the slip said. She simply took his ash-stained hands in hers, her Yin Qi flowing into him—not to heal a physical wound, but to offer a quiet, steadying warmth. She tore a clean strip of fabric from the hem of her skirt and began to carefully bind the shallow cuts on his knuckles.

"They're alive?" she asked softly, her dark eyes entirely focused on wrapping his hand.

"I don't know," Ye Chen whispered, his voice raw. "But they didn't leave me."

Yue watched them from the edge of the dais. For a creature who had lived centuries in absolute detachment, the sight of their effortless intimacy struck a strange, discordant chord in her chest. She pushed the feeling down, her violet eyes narrowing as she processed the lingering energy of the destroyed slip.

"The seal on that message," Yue said, her tone sharp, "bore the imprint of the Azure Sword Sect. An Orthodox Grand Sect. If your parents were running from them as well as the Shadow Sect, it means you have no allies in the cultivation world. Everyone will hunt you."

"Then we fight everyone," Xiao Mei said without looking up, tying off the bandage with a sharp tug.

"Spoken like a mortal who has never seen a Grandmaster level a mountain," Yue scoffed, crossing her arms. "Your raw resonance is powerful, but against an organized sect—"

A violent, bone-rattling boom cut Yue off.

The entire subterranean cavern violently pitched to the side. Ye Chen scrambled to his feet, pulling Xiao Mei up with him. He looked up at the ceiling.

The shimmering silver membrane of the water array—the absolute barrier keeping the raging White Serpent River from crushing them—was no longer silver.

A sickening, corrupted black stain was spreading across the center of the membrane, spider-webbing outward like venom in a vein.

Yue's face went completely bloodless. The silver lotus hairpin trembled in her hand. "No... that's impossible. Commander Feng cannot breach a Guardian array. He needs Guardian blood to corrupt the seal."

"You're right here," Ye Chen said, dread pooling in his stomach as the black stain widened.

"I am the Guardian of the *First* Gate," Yue whispered, taking a slow step backward as the cavern shuddered again. "But Elder Li... he used to be a Grand Elder of the capital. He carries the bloodline of the Founders."

Above them, the corrupted membrane bulged inward. A single, heavy drop of boiling black blood pushed through the barrier. It plummeted fifty feet and struck the white jade floor, sizzling and melting a crater into the indestructible stone.

Through the distorted, groaning water array, Commander Feng's muffled, demonic laughter echoed into the chamber.

The seal was breaking.
