And the one to break the silence was Miyako.
"Senju," Miyako said with a blank tone while looking at Naruto, turning the awkward situation into a tense one.
"It seems that you know about me, Uchiha," Naruto said with the same tone
"I do. And my brother has told me about you." Miyako said in the same blank tone.
"Is that so? Because I only got to know about you today." Naruto said in a neutral tone.
"Oh, really?" Miyako said, a blank look on her face, giving her younger brother a sidelong glance, who let out an awkward chuckle.
"Alright," Mikoto said, clapping once while entering the room, which broke the tense atmosphere.
"What with the energy here? It's as if both of you are meeting each other on the front line while opposing each other." Mikoto said while eyeing Naruto and Miyako.
"I am just being civilized," Miyako said blankly
"I agree with the Uchiha," Naruto said blankly.
Mikoto sighed deeply while putting a hand on her forehead.
"Miyako, just why are you like this?" Mikoto said with a tired sigh while Miyako looked away.
"And Naruto-kun, what's with the attitude? This isn't how you usually are." Mikoto said, looking at Naruto.
"Just reflecting the energy back," Naruto replied.
"Just take a seat and talk properly. Lunch will be served shortly." Mikoto said
She looked intently at Naruto as he took a seat opposite Miyako, then let out a sigh and went back to the kitchen.
The atmosphere at the table was awkward, as two of the people at the table looked at the other two sitting there, looking at each other.
Shisui and Itachi exchanged a brief glance before looking back at Naruto and Miyako. The Kids, on the other hand, had gone to play in the house yard. Mikoto was the one to tell them to go there and wait to be called for lunch. It spared them from being present in the tense and awkward situation in the living room.
"So," Shisui started, trying to clear the atmosphere.
"How were your missions recently? I know mine were a pain." Shisui said with a smile before looking at Itachi, looking as if silently asking for backup.
"I haven't been on any missions lately, but I have been focusing on my training," Itachi said in his usual tone
"That is good. What about you, nee-san?" Shisui said, looking to the side at his sister.
"You already know that police patrols are usually boring, Shisui," Miyako replied
"I am sure you encountered something interesting," Shisui said
"Just the usual stupidity and idiocy," Miyako replied with a blank tone, making Shisui sigh
"What about you, Naruto? Anything interesting on your last mission?" Shisui said, looking at Naruto.
"It was eventful," Naruto replied briefly
"That's all??" Shisui asked a bit bewildered, to which Naruto gave a single nod.
"Of course it is. Who was I kidding?" Shisui said with a low tone.
He knows that Naruto has never been seen taking missions from the mission hall ever since he got promoted to Chunin. So, it is clear where he was assigned to without saying it.
"Food is ready," Mikoto said as she entered the room, carrying a couple of trays.
"Let me help you, Nee-san/Kaa-san." Naruto, Miyako, and Itachi said as they stood up from their chairs.
Hearing what was said, Naruto and Miyako looked back at each other, but with a bit of surprise this time.
"Sit down, you two; you are guests here." Mikoto said, looking at Naruto and Miyako while setting what was on the trays on the table.
"Help me get the rest, will you, Itachi?" Mikoto said, walking back to the kitchen with Itachi following her.
"You call her nee-san too?" Miyako asked with slight surprise in her voice. The first emotion Naruto heard from her since meeting her.
Why wouldn't she be surprised?
The Senju heir is calling a Uchiha, who happens to be the clan head's wife, Nee-san.
"I do. You should have seen her face when I called her "Oba-san."" Naruto said while whispering the last part.
"She gave you a smile that promised pain?" Miyako asked with a small smile forming on her face, surprising Naruto slightly and Shisui greatly.
"Yeah, she did. I assume something similar happened to you?" Naruto asked.
"It did, well, a bit violent too." Miyako said with a small chuckle as Mikoto appeared again with Itachi following her, while both carried trays
"I heard quiet talking. What is it about?" Mikoto asked with slightly narrowed eyes
"Nothing," Naruto and Miyako replied together while looking away from her, much to Mikoto's surprise.
She looked at Shisui, who had a bewildered expression, before looking back at Naruto and Miyako.
"Itachi, can you go call the little ones?" Mikoto asked her eldest, who nodded before making his way to the yard.
As Mikoto sat down, she eyed Naruto and Miyako for a few moments, trying to find out what had gotten them to behave like that.
"Were you two talking about me behind my back?" Mikoto asked with her eyes narrowing
"Of course not, Nee-san," Miyako said with a blank look
"Whatever got you such an idea?" Naruto asked with a slightly shocked expression on his face.
'Women's intuition is something else. ' Naruto thought to himself, only to hear an amused huff from inside his mindscape.
Mikoto's eyes narrowed even more at the two before her face relaxed, and a pleasant smile appeared on her face when she heard multiple sets of footsteps coming towards the room.
…
half an hour later:
"Thank you for having us, Nee-san," Naruto said as he, along with Mito and Karin, stood in front of the Uchiha clan head's house.
"You are welcome, Naruto-kun. You know you and the little ones are always welcome." Mikoto said with a warm smile.
"I am not little," Mito said with a pouty look while Karin nodded, making the other chuckle.
"See you later, Nee-san. Give my greetings to Fugaku-san." Naruto said as he and his sisters started to walk away.
"Will do, Naruto-kun," Mikoto said as she waved at them.
"We will be leaving too, Nee-san. Thank you for the food." Miyako said as she and Shisui walked out of the house.
"You are welcome, Miyako-chan. Don't be a stranger." Mikoto said with a warm smile while looking at the two.
"We live a minute or two away in the same compound, Nee-san," Miyako said as she and Shisui walked away.
Mikoto just smiled and waved until they disappeared past a corner of the house's gate.
