Chapter 45 - The New History Teacher

The week began with an announcement that drew more attention than usual. During morning assembly the principal introduced a new faculty member: a woman named Elise Korrin who would be joining the history department for the remainder of the term. She stood at the front of the hall with calm composure— mid-thirties, dark hair pulled into a neat twist, glasses that gave her a scholarly appearance, and a quiet authority that made the room settle quickly.

Kaito Tanaka watched from his seat, Seraphina beside him. Something about the woman registered as slightly off through the pact, a faint residual energy that did not belong to an ordinary teacher. Seraphina's fingers brushed his under the desk, confirming she had felt it too.

"She is not what she appears," Seraphina murmured later as they walked to class. "There is discipline in her posture and a controlled stillness that does not come from classroom experience alone."

Kaito nodded. "We'll keep an eye on her."

Aiden Voss, sitting several rows ahead, showed no particular reaction. He did not recognize the woman. Marcus Voss had not informed his son of the decision.

Elise Korrin settled into her role with practiced ease. Her lessons were precise, her knowledge of historical conflicts and hidden power structures unusually sharp. Within days she had arranged her classroom so that she could observe specific students without drawing attention. Kaito and Seraphina quickly became the focus of that quiet scrutiny.

She noticed the small things first. The way shadows near Kaito sometimes moved a fraction of a second before he did. The subtle way Seraphina's presence seemed to still the air around her. The quiet intensity of their bond when they sat close. During one lesson on ancient guardian traditions, Elise asked a carefully worded question about legends of beings who formed lasting connections across different realms. Seraphina answered with measured calm. Elise recorded the response later in a private notebook.

After school she remained in the empty classroom and made her first formal report.

"Subject pair continues to display anomalous energy signatures consistent with a high-level pact," she wrote. "The female subject demonstrates control and presence beyond any recorded human baseline. Preliminary assessment indicates a significant threat potential if left unchecked. Request authorization for expanded observation and possible reinforcement."

Marcus Voss received the report that evening. His reply was brief: Continue observation. Document everything. Reinforcement will be considered once the evaluation is complete.

Aiden remained unaware. He continued to spend time with Celestia, their relationship deepening into something steady and genuine. During a quiet walk after school he admitted that his father's pressure had increased again.

"He's asking for more detailed observations," Aiden said. "Still using language I don't fully understand. Something about stability ratings and long-term value. I keep telling him I need more time."

Celestia listened carefully. "Then take the time. Do not let anyone rush you into a decision you have not made for yourself."

Meanwhile Kaito and Seraphina adjusted their routines. Training sessions became more carefully concealed. Power demonstrations in the Abyss continued, each one refining Kaito's control further. During one private evening on the rooftop Seraphina spoke quietly about the new teacher.

"She is watching us with purpose," she said. "Not simple curiosity. Her attention is focused and disciplined. We should assume she is connected to the same lineage that produced Aiden."

Kaito's jaw tightened. "If the Voss family is placing people inside the school without telling him, they're moving faster than we thought."

"Then we remain careful," Seraphina answered. "And we continue to grow stronger."

The bond between them carried both resolve and quiet intimacy. Later that night, after a demanding training session, they stayed close for a long time, the physical and emotional connection between them serving as both comfort and reaffirmation. The presence of a hidden observer only made those private moments feel more necessary.

Elise Korrin continued her work methodically. She noted the frequency of Kaito and Seraphina's absences, the residual energy that sometimes lingered after they returned, and the way other students seemed unconsciously drawn to or unsettled by their presence. Her second report was more direct.

"Female subject exhibits characteristics consistent with high-ranking abyssal origin. Male subject's power growth is rapid and stable. Pair meets multiple criteria for elevated classification. Recommend immediate reinforcement to ensure containment options remain available."

Marcus Voss read the report in silence. For the first time he considered sending additional support.

Aiden still knew nothing. He sat with Celestia during lunch the next day, their conversation lighter than it had been in days. For a short while the pressure of family expectations faded into the background. Kaito watched them from across the garden and felt the complicated mix of caution and reluctant hope that had become familiar.

Seraphina's hand found his. "The pieces are moving," she said quietly. "We will meet them as they come."

The new history teacher continued her quiet observations, her reports growing more urgent. The Voss family's hidden agenda was no longer distant theory. It had entered the school in human form, and the first request for reinforcement had already been made.

Kaito and Seraphina returned to their training that evening with sharper focus. The shadows answered with greater precision. The bond between them held firm. Whatever came next, they would face it together.
