Chapter 44 - The Weight of Old Records

The days following the latest demonstration in the Nine Hells settled into a tense quiet. Kaito Tanaka felt the residual power of the Abyss still humming beneath his skin, stronger and more refined than before. Shadows answered him with almost no effort now, forming and dissolving at the edge of thought. Seraphina noticed the change immediately. During their morning routine she watched him with a mixture of pride and caution, her hand resting lightly on his wrist where the pact mark glowed faintly under the skin.

"They will not stop testing us," she said as they prepared for school. "Every time you prove yourself, the lesser lords recalculate. Some will seek alliance. Others will look for softer targets."

Kaito leaned in and kissed her forehead. "Then we stay ready. Together."

School carried the usual noise and routine, yet the undercurrents among their group had grown sharper. Aiden Voss seemed more withdrawn than usual. During free period he sat with Celestia near the library windows, their conversation low and intense. Kaito caught only fragments as he passed, but the tension in Aiden's shoulders was unmistakable.

Later that afternoon Aiden received a call. He stepped away from the group near the school gates, phone pressed to his ear. Kaito's enhanced senses picked up the voice on the other end— Marcus Voss, measured and firm.

"The pendant has reacted too many times," Marcus said. "You have delayed long enough. I need a full evaluation of the pair. The Archive has criteria for these cases. You know what a potential True Anchor looks like."

Aiden's reply was careful. "I'm still assessing. It's not clear-cut."

"It never is at first," Marcus answered. "That is why we observe, confirm, and then decide. Do not let personal attachments cloud the family's purpose. Report properly this week."

The call ended. Aiden stood still for several seconds before returning to the others. Celestia immediately noticed the shift in his expression and walked with him a short distance away. Their conversation remained private, but the concern on her face was clear.

That evening Kaito and Seraphina trained in the backyard under the usual illusions. The session focused on control under pressure. Seraphina applied steady streams of abyssal energy while Kaito maintained layered defenses and adaptive probes. The work was demanding, and when it ended they were both breathing hard. The intimacy that followed was quieter than usual, grounded in the simple need to reaffirm what they had built.

"Something is changing with Aiden," Kaito said afterward as they sat on the porch steps. "His father is pushing harder."

Seraphina nodded. "Hunter lineages rarely remain neutral once they detect a strong pact. We should prepare for the possibility that his family will demand more than observation."

The next day brought a clearer sign. During a group study session Aiden was quieter than usual. When the conversation turned to family traditions he spoke carefully.

"My family keeps records," he said. "Old ones. Most of what I was taught is about protection and balance. But lately my father has been referencing things I've never heard before— criteria, evaluations, something he calls the Archive. He wants me to look at certain patterns more carefully."

Celestia watched him closely. "What kind of patterns?"

Aiden hesitated. "Ones that involve strong connections between… different kinds of beings. He says some of those connections can be useful if they are stable enough. I don't fully understand it yet."

The words hung in the air. Kaito felt the pact mark warm slightly. Seraphina's expression remained calm, but the bond carried a pulse of sharpened attention.

After the study session ended, Aiden asked to speak with Kaito alone. They walked a short distance from the others.

"I need to be honest," Aiden said. "My father is treating you and Seraphina as more than a possible threat. He's using language from records I've never been allowed to see. He keeps mentioning something called a True Anchor. I don't know what that means exactly, but the way he says it… it doesn't sound like simple containment."

Kaito kept his voice steady. "And what are you going to do?"

Aiden glanced back toward Celestia. "I'm going to find out what the records actually say. I won't hand anyone over based on incomplete information. But if my family is planning something larger than I've been told, I need to know."

The honesty was unexpected. Kaito nodded once. "Then find out. We'll be ready either way."

That night the summons came earlier than usual. Seraphina opened the rift, and the two of them stepped into the crimson expanse of the Nine Hells. The court was restless. Reports indicated that several lesser lords had begun quiet negotiations with outside parties, searching for any advantage. Kaito stood at Seraphina's side through the formal audiences, his shadows forming precise, controlled displays of strength whenever a challenge was implied. The demonstrations were cleaner and more efficient than before. By the end of the session the atmosphere had shifted from open testing to cautious recalculation.

In the private chamber afterward Seraphina dismissed the remaining attendants and turned fully to Kaito. The glamour fell away. Wings partially unfurled as she stepped into his arms.

"They are adjusting their plans," she said. "Your growth is forcing them to reconsider. But pressure from the mortal side is rising as well. Aiden's family is moving."

Kaito held her close. "We'll face both. Together."

The hours that followed were intense and unhurried. The bond between them carried the residual energy of the court, the quiet tension from Earth, and the deeper certainty of their partnership. When they finally returned, the night was advanced and the city lights stretched out below them like a fragile map.

The following school day Aiden remained subdued. During lunch he and Celestia walked the edge of the garden, speaking in low voices. At one point Aiden stopped and looked at her with an expression that mixed determination and conflict.

"I need to look into the family records more carefully," he said. "There are things my father isn't telling me. If those things put you or the others at risk, I want to know before it's too late."

Celestia's hand rested on his arm. "Then look. But do not carry it alone."

The choice was forming. Aiden's loyalty to his bloodline and his growing attachment to Celestia were beginning to pull in opposite directions. The old records of the Voss family— whatever they truly contained— were no longer distant history. They were becoming an active force in the present.

Kaito watched from a short distance, Seraphina's presence steady at his side. The threads of power, inheritance, and decision continued to tighten. Rivals in the Nine Hells measured every new display of strength. The Voss family pressed for evaluation and control. Yet the bonds already formed offered a different kind of foundation.

He was ready to keep standing on it.
