Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: Marriage License

Lyra slept with a grudge and woke up with a headache. She kept thinking about his reasons for not letting her work. It's not like people outside would know, she just didn't want to remain idol. She didn't even mind going to work somewhere else, as long as she wasn't indoor all day, she was okay, but that ruthless and indifferent man wouldn't even give it a thought. She sluggishly got out her bed. Last night, after she left the study, Caleb informed her that they'll be going to a courthouse to apply for a marriage license.

Although, Lyra couldn't understand why they needed to do that as it was just a fake marriage, she asked no questions. Not like he ever answered her questions. Whatever reason he had, she didn't care. All she knew was that immediately three months were over, she would leave the house or probably go back to being a maid. She dragged herself into the bathroom and took a long relaxing bath. She never played with her baths, especially since she got to the mansion. The bathroom was so comfortable, she didn't mind sleeping there. She heard the door of her room open while she was wrapping a towel around her body. She opened the door slightly and took a peak outside and her eyes went wide. She rushed of the bathroom. "What are you doing?" She asked the three women who were standing next to her closet. She studied the women closely and confirmed she had never seen them before. One of them was a middle aged brunette in a female designers suit. She stood proud with her shoulders high and her face void of emotions. The other two ladies were probably Lyra's age. They held a row of hangers full of windbreakers. Besides them was a cart full of varieties of sweaters, two other women came in with carts as well, these ones containing shirts, coats, jackets, gowns and trousers and they kept coming until the whole room was filled with clothes. The first woman finally spoke. "Good morning Miss. Levine, I'm Vera, the service Manager of Oueen's wear & accessories." She barely left Lyra time to think it over. She sauntered towards her with respect. " Miss. Levine, would you mind if I take your measurements? "

Lyra's eyes remained wide all the while the lady spoke. What was happening? What did they need her measurements for? As if in a dream, she stood up and let the staff take her measurements. "Um, are you measuring clothes for me?" Lyra inquired sounding confused. "Yes Miss. Levine." The lady let out a professional smile. Lyra was overwhelmed with mixed feelings: nervousness, shock, uncertainty and a little bit of excitement.

Although Lyra was still in her towel, she had put on underwear so the lady took off the towel causing Lyra to blush out of embarrassment. No one has ever seen her half naked until today. After taking her measurements, the staff picked up a few clothes , which were just her size. She didn't even need to try them on because the girls held each one standing in a row for her to choose.

"Which one do you not like, Miss. Levine." Vera asked her sincerely. Lyra looked at the clothes and they were all pretty. How was she supposed to choose. She had never worn such beautiful clothes before, she felt honored. But she just couldn't believe it. "No." She shook her head. "Yes, Miss. Levine." Vera nodded slightly and faced the staff. "Put them all in the closet." The staff took the sweaters and began to stock the closet. "But I didn't say I want them all." Lyra tried to explain. Actually, she didn't even notice what the clothes looked like. She was in a daze unable to grasp the situation she was in. " Miss. Levine, we've been told by Mr. Donovan to keep all the clothes that are your size. " Seemingly, Vera's eyes were full of envy. The whole morning, she was picking out clothes. Vera just asked her what she didn't like and the rest would be kept in the closet. It got to a point they brought in carts filled with underwears and a shoe cart. Lyra was starting to lose her calm even though she didn't show it. Different styles and different trends she didn't know existed.

Did all rich people buy clothes like this? It was so extravagant. She wondered if her room had become a mall. Even though she was already exhausted, the staff was very professional and still kept a standard posture and a smiling face. Lyra collapsed on the sofa in her room after they left. The shock had subsided, now she was curious about why that cold man had bothered to buy her clothes, not just any clothes, expensive ones. She was going to ask him later.

It was afternoon already and Lyra left room to find something to eat. She didn't want to bother the maids or Miss. Goergia and Mrs. Donovan seemed to have gone out. Since she was busy picking clothes all morning, she hadn't eaten a thing. She strolled into the kitchen and the maids greeted her. She smiled at them in response and proceeded to make something to eat. The maids tried to persuade her not to offering to make her something instead but she refused.

She finally made a light meal and took it upstairs to her room to eat. She wasn't a light eater but she couldn't bring herself to eat too much because had no appetite for food even though she was hungry. She finished eating and took the plates to the kitchen and proceeded to wash them, again the maids offered to do it but she didn't let them. She didn't think she was any different from them, although she wasn't a maid, she was also working there so she did all her chores herself. Getting out of the kitchen, she found Miss. Goergia at the door. "Dear , how are you?" "I'm fine aunt." Lyra replied with a smile.

They were interrupted by the voice of Mr. Brooks. "Miss. Levine, the boss has just arrived and is waiting for you in the car." He informed Lyra who narrowed her eyes in confusion. "In the car? Where are we going?" She asked. "To the courthouse." Caleb replied strolling into the living room. Courthouse? Where they getting their marriage license today? "The Boss isn't patient. I advise you change quickly so we can leave." Caleb added with a straight face and Lyra nodded heading upstairs to change.

She opened the closet that was now filled with clothes and wondered what she was going to wear. She was so bad at fashion, she couldn't decide what was good. She decided to wear her own clothes but paused after remembering who she was going out with. Compared to these clothes, hers were shaby and she didn't want to disgrace him or give the people in the courthouse any room for doubt. She picked out a dress that reached her knees. It was a yellow long sleeve and had a V neck which showed a little bit of her cleavage. She wasn't very comfortable but it was the perfect dress for this outing. She was terrible with heels so she wore beautiful flats instead.

She looked in the mirror and let her raven black hair fall to her mid back. She didn't put up makeup. She smiled at her reflection that looked like a different person. She picked up a designer purse and the necessary papers that would be needed and walked out of the room. Getting outside the mansion, Caleb got stuck looking at her change of appearance.

Was this the same girl that had signed the contract or someone else? Since the back seat door was already opened by him, Lyra just slipped in. Caleb shook his head in realization and closed the door. He got into the passengers seat and the car left the compound...
