Chapter 5 - Chapter Three: The Television Was Too Loud

Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles, California

April 29th, 1992 - 3:22 p.m.

The television was too loud because nobody had meant to be listening.

That was how it happened in houses with children. The set stayed on beneath ordinary life, not quite watched and not quite ignored, a square of moving weather in the corner of a room where crayons rolled under furniture, toast went cold on small plates, and adults told themselves they were only keeping an eye on things.

At Hayvenhurst, the family room had been arranged for peace and had produced paperwork instead.

Riley and Benjamin had taken over the rug with blocks, a shoebox, three plastic animals, one sock puppet of disputed ownership, and Toast, who was no longer simply a dinosaur but a senior figure in domestic government. Julian sat nearby with a red crayon in one hand and a green one in the other, both held with the serious, slightly offended concentration of a two-year-old whose fingers had not yet agreed to become instruments.

He had drawn one line.

It was not much of a line. It wandered across the paper like it had received bad directions. But it was red, definite, and his.

Benjamin leaned over it. "Is that a road?"

Julian looked at him.

It's a warning.

His mouth produced something closer to "No."

Riley, who was nearly five and therefore believed herself a necessary interpreter between civilisation and everyone else, examined the paper with her hands on her knees. "It's maybe a snake."

"Snakes are green," Benjamin said.

"Some snakes are red."

"Name one."

Riley paused.

Lisa, standing behind the sofa with a telephone wedged between shoulder and ear, said without looking round, "Do not make your sister invent reptiles before snack."

"I'm not," Benjamin said. "I'm asking science."

Julian pressed the green crayon too hard. The tip snapped.

He stared at it.

Treason.

The television showed a courthouse.

Lisa heard the change before she saw the screen. The room had different temperatures for different kinds of news. Entertainment news came in bright and smooth, all teeth and studio lights. Weather came with maps. War came with the awful politeness of men saying things like coalition and surgical while bombs made green shapes in the night. Courtrooms had a particular silence. They made presenters slower.

Priscilla, seated near the window with a legal pad on her knee, stopped writing.

Katherine Jackson stood in the doorway with a folded towel in both hands. She had been moving through the house since morning with the soft authority of someone who knew exactly where fear hid its corners. Hayvenhurst was her house in the way some women owned places without needing the deed to say so. It answered to her habits.

On the television, words moved across the bottom of the screen.

Rodney King.

Verdict.

Lisa's hand tightened around the telephone.

The voice on the other end - Bill, from security, calling from the gatehouse - kept speaking. Something about cars slowing outside. Something about the freeway. Something about keeping everyone inside until they knew more.

Lisa watched the screen.

The verdict landed in the room with no physical sound.

Not guilty.

Not guilty.

Not guilty.

Not the same officer every time. Not the same charge. The details mattered and did not matter all at once, the way legal details did when television translated them into a feeling the country already had in its teeth.

Riley looked up from the sock puppet. "What happened?"

No adult answered quickly enough.

That was always the problem with truth around children. It arrived too big for their hands, and adults, who had spent whole lives failing to hold it properly, suddenly had to break it into safe pieces.

Benjamin followed Riley's gaze. "Why is the man talking like that?"

Lisa put down the phone without saying goodbye.

Priscilla moved first. She crossed the room and turned the volume down, then lower, then off entirely.

The sudden silence had weight.

Riley's face sharpened. "Why did you do that?"

"Because that is not for you," Priscilla said.

"But it is happening."

"Yes." Priscilla's voice stayed even. "And still not for you."

Julian looked at the black screen.

He knew this one. He knew the city would burn.

What he did not know was the exact sound Lisa made when Los Angeles turned dangerous with all her children in the room.

It was small. Not a gasp. Smaller. A breath catching on a hook.

Julian looked down at the broken green crayon. It had left dust on his fingers. He rubbed thumb against forefinger and watched the colour smear.

Lisa crossed the room and crouched in front of him.

"Hey."

He held up the broken crayon.

"Yeah," she whispered. "I know."

That was not about the crayon.

She took the pieces from him before he could put one in his mouth and replaced them with a wooden block from Benjamin's pile. Wood was safer. Wood did not turn into powder under pressure. Wood could be held.

The phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

It rang again.

Katherine answered from the hall. "Hayvenhurst."

Lisa heard Michael's name before Katherine said it. A wife's body did that. It heard the shape of worry before the word arrived.

Katherine looked through the doorway. "It's Michael."

Lisa stood too fast.

Julian followed the movement with his eyes. Riley grabbed Benjamin's sleeve. Priscilla glanced toward the curtains, then toward the security guard just visible through the side window.

Lisa took the receiver in the hallway.

"Where are you?"

Michael's voice crossed the line unevenly. Not far away, but far enough. A different room, a different side of the city, cables, static, assistants, men saying his name because everybody always needed Michael Jackson for something right up until he needed one ordinary road to be clear.

"I'm at the rehearsal warehouse. I'm safe. Are you?"

She shut her eyes.

Not hello. Not how are you. Are you safe. Marriage stripped down to bone.

"We're at Hayvenhurst. Your mother is here. My mom is here. Danny's on his way. Security is on the gate."

"The children?"

"Inside. They saw too much already."

A pause. Behind him, someone spoke quickly. Michael covered the receiver; Lisa heard the muffled shape of no.

"I'm coming back," he said.

"No."

"Lisa-"

"No, Michael. Roads are closing. People are scared. You getting into a car right now helps nobody."

Silence.

She hated saying it. Hated being right more.

"I should be there."

"You should be safe. Those are not always the same thing."

The words landed hard between them.

In the family room, Benjamin whispered, "Is Michael in trouble?"

Riley whispered back, "No. Mum would be louder."

Priscilla heard it and closed her eyes for half a second.

Lisa pressed the receiver harder to her ear. "Talk to Julian."

"Can I?"

The question nearly broke her. As if anyone could refuse him that. As if this family had not been built from people trying to reach one another through walls of noise.

She carried the phone back into the family room.

"It's Dad," she said to Julian, placing the word carefully because it belonged only to him in this room.

Riley and Benjamin both understood the placement. They did not look hurt. Children were territorial about names, but they were also precise when adults allowed them to be. Dad was Danny. Michael was Michael. For Julian, Michael was Dad. The house had learned the difference the way it learned everything else: through repetition, small corrections, and one argument Riley had won in March by saying, "Names should not be greedy."

Lisa held the receiver near Julian's ear.

Michael's voice came through small and frayed. "Hi, Juju."

Julian looked at the phone.

Plastic. Cord. Voice without body. His father compressed into static.

He reached for it with both hands.

Lisa lowered it. The receiver was too large for his face and smelled faintly of hands and dust and house air. He pressed his cheek against it.

"Dad," he said.

The word was not new, but it landed new every time.

Michael stopped breathing on the other end. Lisa heard it.

"I'm here," Michael said.

Julian kept his cheek against the phone. He did not know if Michael could feel anything. Of course he could not. Bodies tried anyway. That was their great foolish gift.

Riley hovered at Lisa's elbow. "Can I tell Michael?"

Lisa shifted the phone.

Riley took it with both hands, grave and careful. "Michael?"

"Hi, Riley."

"Why is the city angry?"

Lisa flinched.

Michael did not answer immediately.

Then, softly, "Because people were hurt and nobody listened properly."

Riley looked at the dead television.

"Are we hurt?"

"No."

"Is Juno?"

"No."

"Good."

That was Riley. The circle drawn. The important people counted first, then the world allowed in by stages.

Benjamin took the phone next. "A car looked hurt."

Michael's voice changed, gentle around the edges. "I'm sorry you saw that."

"Grandma Cilla turned it off."

"Grandma Cilla was right."

Priscilla lifted one eyebrow at Lisa, who almost smiled and hated that she almost could.

The call ended because calls always ended before anyone was finished needing them.

Afterward, the family room did not resume itself. The crayons stayed where they were. The television stayed off. Outside the windows, Los Angeles remained bright and wrong.

Consuela arrived with sandwiches nobody wanted and juice boxes the children accepted as emergency diplomacy.

"Eat," she said. "Fear does not cook."

Danny came in five minutes later, breathless but not dramatic, which was one of the reasons Lisa had married him and one of the reasons divorce had not made him disappear. He crossed the room in the correct order: Riley first, Benjamin second, Julian third, Lisa after that, because complicated families survived by simple things done precisely.

Riley went into him without speaking.

Benjamin held up the sock puppet. "The city is angry."

Danny closed his eyes for less than a second, then opened them and crouched.

"I heard."

"Can we tell it to stop?"

"I wish we could."

"Michael said people didn't listen."

Danny looked at Lisa. She nodded once.

"Michael's right," Danny said.

Julian offered him the wooden block.

Danny accepted it solemnly. "For me?"

Julian nodded.

It was not comfort exactly. It was what he had: a block instead of a broken crayon, a father on a phone, another father on the carpet, smoke waiting somewhere outside the house, and adults turning fear into sandwiches.

Danny sat beside them in his good jeans and held the block like it mattered.

Outside, Los Angeles began to burn properly.

South Los Angeles, California

April 29th, 1992 - 6:41 p.m.

Marisol Vega locked the pharmacy door with hands that would not stop shaking.

She had done it at six every day for eleven years. Turn the sign. Pull the gate. Key in the lower lock, upper lock, tug twice, because the second tug was for her mother, who had never trusted locks installed by men who whistled while working. Today the ritual felt like a joke told by someone cruel.

Smoke stood at the end of the block.

Not drifted. Stood.

A man ran past carrying a television that looked too large for him. Two boys followed, laughing too loudly. Somewhere glass broke with the bright, ordinary sound glass always made, which was offensive. The world should not sound ordinary while ending.

Marisol had watched the verdict on the small television above the prescription counter with three customers and Mr. Kim from the market next door. Nobody had spoken for several seconds. Then everybody had spoken at once.

By five, the phone had started failing more often than not. By six, customers had stopped pretending they had come in for medicine. People came for batteries. Milk. Tape. Anything that looked like preparation. One woman bought three bottles of children's Tylenol and whispered, "Just in case," as if just in case were a place everyone had moved to without telling her.

Now the street belonged to sirens that could not decide where to go.

She looked toward Mr. Kim's market. The metal grate was half down. His son, Daniel, nineteen and always wearing headphones, stood on a crate trying to pull it the rest of the way. Tonight he had no headphones. That frightened her more than it should have.

"Daniel!" she called.

He looked over.

"Go inside!"

"My dad says watch the front."

"Your dad is stubborn. Go inside!"

He gave a helpless shrug that looked exactly like nineteen: old enough to be frightened, young enough to obey fear badly.

A car rolled slowly down the street, windows down, men inside watching the storefronts.

Marisol's heart tried to climb out through her throat.

Daniel jumped down and disappeared behind the grate.

The car moved on.

She stood with the keys biting lines into her palm and thought of her daughter at home with the television on. Eight years old. Old enough to ask why. Too young for the answer to do anything but damage.

A helicopter moved overhead.

The city looked back at itself from the sky and called it coverage.

Marisol went inside, locked the final bolt, and sat on the floor behind the counter until her knees stopped shaking enough for her to crawl to the phone.

Hayvenhurst, Encino, Los Angeles, California

April 29th, 1992 - 8:18 p.m.

By nightfall, Hayvenhurst had become a house made of lists.

Names of staff who had called. Names of staff who had not. Relatives accounted for. Relatives still trying to get through. Roads to avoid. Roads already closed. Pharmacies open. Pharmacies not answering. A note in Priscilla's hand that read NO CAMERAS, underlined twice, though nobody in the house had suggested cameras because everyone in the house had developed some basic survival instinct.

Katherine moved through the kitchen with tea, soup, a calm voice, and the severe competence of a woman who had raised famous children before fame learned how to be subtle. Consuela controlled the stove as if soup were a municipal service. Danny kept Riley and Benjamin occupied by allowing them to sort raisins into two cups and then pretend this had been educational. Bill and Wayne spoke near the side door in low voices. Lisa kept touching Julian's hair.

Julian noticed the touching because she kept stopping herself.

Touch. Stop.

Touch. Stop.

Adults believed children did not notice worry if nobody named it. Adults were optimistic in strange ways.

The television in the family room stayed muted.

That made it worse.

Without the newsreaders' voices, the images became dreams with bad lighting. A reporter before a burning building. Men running. A line of police. A woman crying into a handkerchief. National Guard vehicles moving through streets Julian had never walked and somehow already knew as places history would return to when it needed footage.

Lisa stood in the doorway, arms folded tightly.

Michael had not arrived.

He had called twice more. The second call had been practical. The third had not. The third had been Michael saying, very softly, "I can hear helicopters," and Lisa sitting down on the bottom stair because the sentence had knocked something out from under her.

Now Katherine stood beside her.

"He will come when it is safe," Katherine said.

"That's what I told him."

"Yes."

"I hate when people listen to me at inconvenient times."

Katherine smiled faintly. "Then you should give worse advice."

Lisa laughed once, surprised by it.

From the kitchen table, Riley looked up. "Mum?"

"Yeah, baby?"

"Can the fire come here?"

Every adult in the room heard the question differently.

Danny's hand went still over the raisin cup. Priscilla looked up from the telephone log. Consuela turned from the stove. Katherine's face softened and strengthened at once.

Lisa crossed to Riley and crouched in front of her.

"No," she said.

Priscilla's eyes moved to her daughter.

It was not a promise any adult could make to the world. But mothers sometimes made legal claims against reality and dared it to appeal.

"No," Lisa repeated. "The fire is far away from this house. We are inside. The doors are locked. There are grown-ups here. We are safe."

Riley studied her face.

"You sure?"

"Yes."

Benjamin leaned over to Julian. "Juno, are you sure?"

Julian had no official position on fire jurisdiction.

He patted the wooden block, which had returned to him after Danny's period of custody.

Benjamin nodded as if this settled it. "Juno says yes."

Lisa shut her eyes.

"I love that our emergency planning now includes toddler masonry."

Danny tipped one raisin into the wrong cup. "It's a growing field."

Priscilla put down her pen. "Do not encourage them."

"I am emotionally dependent on small jokes right now," Lisa said.

"Then make better ones."

"Mom."

The phone rang.

The room froze.

Katherine answered before the second ring. Her shoulders changed as soon as she heard the voice.

"He's at the gate," she said.

Lisa moved before anyone told her to.

Michael came in through the side entrance two minutes later with smoke in his hair and worry on his face.

Not actual ash. Not enough to be dramatic. Just the faint stale smell of a city on fire carried on clothes, caught in curls, tucked into the seams of a black jacket. He looked tired and too alert, the way performers did after shows and parents did after fear.

Riley reached him first because she was closest and because Riley treated emotional access like a hallway she was entitled to use.

"Michael."

He crouched immediately. "Hi, sweetheart."

"The city is angry."

"I know."

"Mum said fire can't come here."

Michael looked at Lisa over Riley's shoulder. In that look was every impossible thing adults had to agree to say to children.

"Your mum is right," he said.

Riley accepted this because two adults had now signed the treaty.

Benjamin approached next, carrying Toast upside down by one leg. "Did the car get better?"

Michael's face almost broke.

He recovered because children deserved adults who could recover.

"I don't know," he said. "I hope so."

This answer disappointed Benjamin and respected him at the same time.

Then Julian reached for him.

That changed the room.

It always did, a little. Not because anyone meant it to. Because Julian reached rarely, and when he did, it felt chosen rather than reflexive. He was two. His arms still had the soft, round seriousness of toddlerhood. His curls were crushed on one side from Lisa's shoulder. His eyes were blue and too direct in the warm kitchen light.

Michael crossed the remaining distance and lifted him.

For one second, Julian pressed his face into his father's neck.

Smoke. Sweat. Soap. Static from the phone line somehow still there in the mind.

Michael held him too tightly, then loosened at once.

"Sorry," he whispered.

Julian gripped his collar.

Don't be sorry. Be here.

His mouth said, "Here."

Michael closed his eyes.

Lisa looked away because love needed privacy even when it was happening in a kitchen with soup, raisins, two grandmothers, an ex-husband, three children and a city on fire.

Priscilla's pen moved again.

On her list, beneath Staff accounted for, she wrote: Michael home.

Then, because she was Priscilla, she drew a line under it and moved to the next call.

April 30th, 1992 - 1:12 a.m.

Julian woke to the smell of smoke.

Not strong. Not enough to mean the house was burning. Just enough to enter sleep and turn it over. He opened his eyes in the dark guest room and did not know, for one panicked second, which life he was in.

Hackney stairwell. Weed smoke. Rain in Mayfair. White void.

Then the nightlight near the door showed Lisa in the chair.

She had fallen asleep sitting up with one leg tucked beneath her, still in jeans, one hand open on the armrest as if she had let go of something only because sleep had ambushed her. Michael lay on top of the covers across the foot of the bed, not asleep so much as temporarily defeated, one hand still angled toward the cot. Riley and Benjamin had been placed on mattresses on the floor after an evening of negotiations that involved water, one sandwich, two false nightmares, and Benjamin insisting Toast needed to see where everyone was.

Toast was under Benjamin's arm.

Riley's hand rested near Julian's cot, not touching it, close enough to prove jurisdiction.

Julian stood carefully.

The cot rail came to his chest. His hands wrapped around it. Beyond the curtains, the night held a faint orange seam.

He knew this city from footage, anniversaries, documentaries, arguments, and the way history turned people into symbols before it was finished treating them as human.

Now it smelled faintly through closed windows.

That was the new thing.

A sound came from his throat.

Not crying.

A hum.

Soft at first. One pitch. Then another. The interval landed true before he chose it. His body knew the vibration: chest, mouth, skull, the tiny architecture of sound moving through a body too small to deserve what was inside it.

Lisa woke instantly.

Mothers did not wake gradually when their children made new sounds during disasters.

"Juju?"

He stopped.

Michael opened his eyes, all at once. Not stage awake. Streetawake. Ridiculous, because Michael had never known streets that way, but Julian's old body recognised the shape of it: the body meeting danger before the room introduced it.

Lisa crossed to the cot and lifted Julian carefully.

"What is it?"

He put his face against her neck.

Smoke. Skin. Shampoo. Fear.

Lisa held him tighter.

"I know," she whispered.

He hummed again before he could stop himself.

This time the melody shaped itself into something almost complete. Not a song anyone knew. Not yet. Three notes and a return, small enough to fit in a dark room.

Michael sat up slowly.

Julian felt the change in him without looking. Wonder arrived in Michael like a hand reaching toward flame. Quick. Helpless. Dangerous if left alone.

Lisa felt it too.

"Michael," she said quietly.

Only his name.

He stopped moving.

The room held the line they had drawn since Julian was born: no tests, no proof, no turning their child into evidence.

"I'm not," Michael whispered.

"I know."

And she did. That was the mercy and the ache of it. Michael was not trying to take anything. He was simply a musician hearing the world rearrange itself through his son's throat.

Riley stirred on the mattress. "Is Juno singing?"

Lisa's mouth brushed Julian's curls. "Juno is tired."

"He sounds nice."

"Go back to sleep, Riley."

"The city is still loud."

"I know."

"Make it stop."

Lisa closed her eyes.

There were things mothers could do. Curtains. Sandwiches. Arms. Televisions turned off before the worst image arrived. Phones held to small ears. Names placed carefully in rooms where families had more than one father in them. There were also things they could not do, and the list was longer than anyone told you before the baby came.

"I can't," she whispered.

Riley was quiet.

Then Benjamin, apparently awake too, said into the dark, "Maybe Juno can hum it smaller."

Michael covered his mouth.

Lisa laughed once, silently, her chest shaking beneath Julian's cheek.

Julian, traitor body that he had, hummed.

Smaller.

Three notes.

Enough to give the room a shape other than fear.

Not enough to save anything.

That mattered.

Michael did not reach for a tape recorder. Did not ask him to do it again. Did not even say beautiful, though the word was all over his face and therefore became Lisa's problem.

He lay back down, eyes open, listening like a father rather than a witness.

That mattered too.

May 1st, 1992 - 9:33 a.m.

By Friday morning, everybody in the house looked older.

Not years. Hours. The kind of older that came from sleeping badly near a television. Katherine moved through rooms with a tray of tea and the soft authority of someone who had survived raising famous children before anyone in the room had learned all the ways fame ate. Priscilla fielded calls with a notepad and a pen, writing names beside phrases like checked in, road closed, don't answer that one. Danny had slept on the sofa and pretended his neck was fine. Lisa had not slept so much as disappeared into chairs for brief intervals.

The children ate toast at the kitchen table.

Toast was also present, which created a naming issue Benjamin found hilarious and Riley considered beneath everyone.

Julian had a slice cut into thin fingers and kept dipping one into applesauce with the solemn concentration of a chemist handling unstable material. His curls had gone wild from sleep and Lisa's repeated attempts to smooth them had only made one side more dramatic. He wore a soft blue shirt with one button done wrong. No one had fixed it. The household had triaged its standards.

The television was on in the other room again, but muted.

The images were worse without sound.

A reporter standing before a burned building. Men with brooms. A woman crying into a handkerchief. National Guard vehicles. Smoke lifting in daylight. The city looked stunned by its own reflection.

Lisa watched from the kitchen doorway.

Katherine came beside her.

"Eat something," Katherine said.

Lisa almost smiled. "Consuela already threatened me."

"Good. Then I am the second warning."

On the screen, a camera panned over a row of destroyed storefronts.

Lisa's face tightened.

"Riley will ask about it again."

"Then answer what she asks," Katherine said. "Not everything you know."

"And Julian?"

Katherine looked toward him.

He was watching applesauce slide down his finger, apparently absorbed by the slow collapse of breakfast physics. Then, without looking up, he tapped the table twice in perfect time with the far-off thud of a helicopter outside.

Katherine saw it.

Lisa saw Katherine see it.

Nobody said prodigy. Nobody said gift. Nobody said Michael. Nobody said Elvis. Nobody said anything that would make the moment bigger than a toddler and a sticky finger.

Consuela placed a bowl in front of Lisa with more force than soup required.

"Coma," she said. "Eat."

Lisa looked at the bowl. "Is this soup or a command?"

"Sí."

Riley brightened. "That means yes."

"Thank you," Lisa said. "I live in fear of bilingual soup."

Benjamin leaned toward Julian. "Juno made the city smaller last night."

The kitchen paused.

Julian looked at him.

Benjamin had applesauce on his chin and complete belief in what he had said. Riley did not contradict him. That was worse somehow. Riley, who contradicted weather.

Michael, standing near the counter with a mug he had not drunk from, lowered his eyes.

Danny saved the room because Danny had a gift for knowing when a sentence needed a doorway.

"Did he?"

Benjamin nodded. "With hum."

"Important work," Danny said.

"Very," Riley added.

Lisa looked at Michael then. A warning, but not against joy. Against hunger. Against the world and every version of the world that would hear a child hum during riots and immediately ask how to package it.

Michael met her eyes and nodded once.

No thing.

Then he dipped toast into applesauce and missed the plate entirely.

Applesauce landed on the table with a soft, wet confidence.

Consuela saw it.

"Julien."

He looked up at her.

"Eso no es arte," she said. "That is not art."

Riley leaned over. "Maybe it is."

"It is applesauce," Consuela said.

"Fancy applesauce," Benjamin offered.

Michael made a strangled sound into his mug.

Lisa laughed before she meant to, one hand over her mouth, eyes still red, soup steaming untouched in front of her. The laugh did not fix anything. It did not rebuild South Los Angeles. It did not unshow the children what they had seen. It did not make the phones stop ringing or the helicopters move on.

But it entered the kitchen and stayed.

For a moment, that was enough work for one sound.

The phone rang again.

Priscilla picked up the receiver from the wall.

"Hayvenhurst," she said.

Her face changed by one degree.

Not family.

Press.

"No," Priscilla said, before the caller finished. "There will be no comment from the family. There are children in this house. That is the comment."

She hung up.

Nobody applauded, though Benjamin looked as if he might.

Consuela put a spoon in Lisa's hand.

"Eat," she repeated.

Lisa looked at the spoon, then at the television, then at Julian, who had placed one sticky hand on the table and one on Michael's sleeve as if both surfaces required equal claim.

Outside, Los Angeles was still burning in places.

Inside, the television stayed muted.

And when Benjamin reached for the remote, Riley slapped his hand away and said, with the exhausted authority of a woman four weeks from turning five, "No. Juno is watching applesauce now."
