The manuscript box was too white.
That was the first problem. It sat in the middle of Lisa's kitchen table with the clean, smug confidence of something that had never had jam on it, never been stepped on by a child, never been shoved under a sofa because somebody's grandmother had come in asking why there were gods on the floor. It was the kind of box adults used when they wanted paper to stop being paper and become evidence.
Julian did not trust it.
He stood on the chair nearest the table, not because he needed the height but because Riley had said nobody should loom over a book unless they were a librarian, and Benjamin had immediately asked whether librarians counted as a military branch. The argument had moved from there to whether a book could technically defect. Danny had said he was proud of all three of them and disappointed by the education system. Marcus had written DEFECTOR BOOK in the margin of his spelling worksheet and then covered it with his arm when Lisa walked past.
On the table, the first hundred and forty-two pages of The Lightning Thief waited in a neat stack.
Not the whole thing. Not yet. The whole thing lived in the black notebook, the blue notebook, three loose folders, two legal pads, the back of an old call sheet Michael had brought home by accident, and one napkin Consuela had threatened to frame because it contained a perfectly good sentence and a grease stain shaped like a small country. The pages in the stack were the clean copy: first chapters, synopsis, character notes, a camp map, and a list of monsters Benjamin had declared "legally exciting."
The adult word for this was submission packet.
Julian preferred packet. Submission sounded like something a god demanded right before someone clever stole his sandals.
Lisa stood at the sink, not washing anything. She had a mug of tea in one hand and a pencil in the other, and she kept looking at the box as though it had asked to take her son to dinner alone.
Michael sat at the far end of the table in Lisa's house with the specific politeness of a man who no longer lived there but still knew which drawer held the matches. He had taken off his sunglasses at the door. Julian appreciated that. Sunglasses inside were acceptable if one was hiding from the public, but less acceptable if one was trying to read a map of Camp Half-Blood.
Priscilla had the title page in front of her.

She read it three times without moving her mouth. That was how Julian knew she was not only reading the words. Grandma Cilla read names the way some people read contracts. She saw the hooks in them.
"Percy Jackson," she said at last.
Julian kept his face still.
"Yes."
Riley leaned over Benjamin's shoulder. "You make it sound like you are asking him to justify a crime."
"Names are rarely innocent," Priscilla said.
"Mine is," Benjamin said.
Danny looked at him. "Benjamin Storm Keough, you once tried to rename yourself Dragon President."
"That was exploratory."
Marcus, who had been quiet long enough for everyone to become suspicious, said, "Percy sounds like someone who gets detention and is correct about why."
Julian looked at him.
"What?" Marcus said. "That's a compliment."
It was, annoyingly.
The kitchen smelled of paper, chicken roasting somewhere behind Consuela's authority, lemon furniture polish, and the expensive graphite from the pencils Lisa kept buying because cheap pencils made Julian look personally betrayed. Outside, Calabasas had turned gold and soft in the late afternoon, a neighbourhood pretending it did not know who lived behind which gates. Inside, everyone had gathered around one box as if the box might bite.
Julian touched the edge of the top page.
The paper was heavier than notebook paper. Smoother. He did not like it better. He understood that it was better. These were not the same thing.
Once it leaves, it is not only mine.
The thought arrived cleanly, without panic. That made it worse.
Lisa set down her mug. "We can wait."
Everybody went quiet in the way families went quiet when an adult said the sentence everyone had been trying not to say.
Julian looked up.
Lisa's face had not hardened. That would have been easier. Hard faces were doors. This was worse: her face was open, frightened in the places she would have hidden from people who did not live in her kitchen. Her pencil tapped once against her thumb.
"Juju," she said, "you know that, right? We do not have to send anything today. We do not have to send anything this month."
Michael's hands folded together on the table. He said nothing. That was one of the things he had learned since October. Silence could be protection if you did not fill it with wonder.
Julian looked at the manuscript box again.
He was seven years old for four more days. Eight waited nearby, rude and inevitable, like a relative who arrived early and expected cake. He had written most of a book before anyone had found a way to make him say why. Adults could handle impossible things if the impossible thing had acceptable packaging: gifted, prodigy, unusual, advanced. They liked those words. Those words made a ladder out of a cliff.
But a book did not care about ladders.
A book either worked or it did not.
"If we wait," Julian said, "will the pages become safer?"
Lisa looked down at him.
He had not said it like a challenge. He had meant it practically. Waiting made some things safer. Cake cooled. Tempers cooled. Soup stopped trying to murder the tongue. Paper only stayed paper.
Priscilla's eyes shifted to Lisa. Danny leaned back slightly, giving the room more air. Riley looked from Julian to the box and bit the inside of her cheek. Benjamin, for once, did not rescue the room with nonsense.
Lisa came to the chair and crouched so her eyes were level with his.
They were very blue, people said about Julian's eyes, as if this was news to the people who had to tell him to brush his teeth while those eyes argued back. Lisa looked into them the way she did when she wanted the boy and not the inheritance.
"No," she said. "But waiting can make you safer."
There it was.
Julian understood the shape of her fear. Not all the words, not the adult paperwork, not the way a headline could pick up a child and carry him into rooms he had never entered. But the shape, yes. He had been born into people who knew what the public did with gifts. It did not unwrap them. It grabbed.
"Then we make rules," he said.
Lisa shut her eyes for half a second.
Michael smiled, small and aching.
"We already have rules," Riley said, suddenly businesslike. "The training card. The television treaty. The mushroom decision, which I still feel was mishandled."
"The mushroom decision was democracy," Danny said.
"Democracy can be wrong," Benjamin replied.
Consuela came in with a dish towel over one shoulder and a wooden spoon in her hand, because somehow she knew when a kitchen needed an armed constitutional authority.
"What rules?" she asked.
"Publishing rules," Julian said.
Consuela looked at the white box. Her expression changed at once. She had not read The Lightning Thief all the way through, but she had fed it. This made her, in her own view, structurally involved.
"Bueno," she said. "First rule: no one takes the child with the book. The book can travel alone."
[Good.]
"Second rule," Lisa said, recovering herself, "no interviews. No photographs. No one announces his age without my permission."
"Third," Priscilla said, voice dry enough to preserve fruit, "no permanent ownership leaves this family. Ever. Publishing rights are licensed. Copyright stays with Julian."
Michael's head lifted.
Julian noticed that. So did Lisa. So did Priscilla, because Priscilla noticed inheritance the way cats noticed ghosts.
"Fourth," Michael said softly, "no one turns him into a trick."
The words sat down heavier than the box.
Julian looked at his father. Michael did not look mystical now. He looked tired in the old places, the places makeup did not fix because they were not on the skin. People had turned him into a trick so many times that even defending him sounded like performance if you were not careful.
"Fifth," Danny said, "a proper agent first. Not a family friend who says everything is wonderful because the house has good snacks."
"Our snacks are excellent," Benjamin said.
"That's exactly the danger."
Marcus raised his hand.
Lisa pointed at him with the pencil. "This is not school."
"I still have an addition."
"Proceed," Priscilla said, amused despite herself.
"Sixth rule: if the gods make an offer, we check with a lawyer."
"Thank you," Lisa said. "That was unexpectedly useful."
Marcus nodded gravely. "I've matured."
"You put ketchup on rice yesterday," Riley said.
"Maturity is not linear."
Julian reached for the pencil. Lisa gave it to him.
On the back of a rejected map page, he wrote:
1. The book travels. I do not.
2. No interviews.
3. We own it.
4. No tricks.
5. Proper agent.
6. Lawyers for gods.
7. Permission is not ownership.
He added the seventh rule before anyone could stop him.
Lisa looked at the page.
"Permission is not ownership," she read.
The words made the kitchen alter by half an inch. Not dramatically. No thunderclap. No god appearing in the fruit bowl with an opinion. Just a small shift, the kind adults made when a child said the adult thing before anyone had found a softer name for it.
Benjamin leaned closer. "Is that about library books?"
"No," Julian said.
"Because library books are basically authorised borrowing."
"Still no."
Priscilla put one finger beside the line and did not touch it. "Explain it to me, sweetheart."
Julian hated explaining feelings when they had already done the work of becoming facts. Facts were cleaner. Feelings came with people staring at you.
He looked at the white box.
"If Hyperion makes the book," he said, "they can make the book. They cannot take Percy."
Danny's face went very still in the way it did when he was trying not to help too quickly.
"Meaning?" he asked.
Julian shrugged with one shoulder. "If they print him, he is still mine. If they sell him in another country, still mine. If someone wants him on television, still mine. If they make toys or games or lunch boxes or a toothbrush where Zeus talks when you press his head—"
"I would buy that," Marcus said.
"—still mine," Julian finished.
Lisa's pencil stopped moving.
Michael looked down at his hands.
There it was again: not jealousy, not greed, not the ugly grabbing version of ownership adults liked to pretend children invented. It was older than that. It was the feeling Julian had when people said Dad's name like they had bought a ticket to his skin, or when magazines printed Mum's grief as if it had been released under contract, or when someone on television said Elvis with the big smile that meant they wanted the shine and not the man.
Percy was not famous. Percy was not even finished. Percy had pencil smudges and a monster list written by Benjamin and one page that still smelled faintly of orange juice because Marcus had been banned from gesturing near manuscripts.
But Percy was a person in Julian's head.
No one was borrowing him and bringing back a stranger.
Priscilla sat back slowly.
"That," she said, "is not a child's instinct."
"Mother," Lisa warned.
"I didn't say it was wrong."
Michael's mouth moved, not quite a smile. "It's a good instinct."
Priscilla reached for a fresh sheet from Lisa's legal pad. Her handwriting arrived neat and dangerous.

Benjamin read upside down with heroic effort. "Merchandising sounds like a disease."
"It can be," Priscilla said.
The room accepted that from her without asking for evidence. Grandma Cilla had lived too close to Colonel Parker's shadow for anyone at this table to treat ownership as an abstract lesson. She did not need to say Elvis. She did not need to say ATV. The names were already in the walls, moving quietly behind the plaster.
Lisa took the legal pad and underlined RESERVED so hard the pencil almost tore the paper.
"A publisher may publish," she said. "A publisher does not own the world."
"Not even Olympus?" Marcus asked.
"Especially not Olympus," Julian said.
His handwriting still looked like a child had asked architecture to dance and architecture had refused. But the rules were readable.
Priscilla took the page and read it.
"Lawyers for gods," she said. "That one may be useful more often than we expect."
Michael laughed under his breath.
Lisa took the title page and placed it on top of the stack. Her thumb stayed for a moment over Julian's name.
"You know what happens after this?" she asked.
He did not say yes. Yes would have meant too much.
"Adults read it," he said.
"Adults judge it," Riley corrected. "Reading and judging are different."
"You judge cereal boxes," Benjamin said.
"Cereal boxes lie."
"They contain prizes."
"Alleged prizes."
Danny put one hand over his eyes.
Lisa's mouth twitched. Then she slid the pages into the white box.
The sound was small. Paper against cardboard. Nothing more. Still, everyone heard it.
Julian did not move.
For months, Percy had lived in the house. He had been a boy on notebook pages, in margin arrows, in Riley's questions, in Benjamin's monster rankings, in Marcus's suspicious campaign for more swords, in Michael's careful silence, in Lisa's protective pencil marks. Now Percy was being folded into clean paper and sent to adults who would not know that Annabeth's first version had been bossier because Riley had been in a mood, or that Grover's panic had improved after Benjamin dropped a plate, or that Camp Half-Blood had acquired better food because Consuela had taken one look at a chapter and said, "No. Children at war still need dinner."
The book was leaving with family fingerprints all over it.
Good.
If adults wanted clean pages, they could learn to read the dirt underneath.

The Markham Agency, New York City
February 12th, 1998 - 9:17 a.m.
Eleanor Markham believed celebrity manuscripts belonged in a special drawer.
The drawer was not labelled this way, because assistants had feelings and authors occasionally visited, but everyone in the office knew it. It was the second drawer down on the left side of her desk, beneath foreign rights folders and above contracts that required signatures from men who called themselves visionary in cover letters. Celebrity manuscripts went there when the polite answer needed time to cool.
The package from Los Angeles arrived by courier in a white box with no glitter, no photograph, no glossy press kit, and no helpful note explaining that the enclosed child was very special.
That improved Eleanor's opinion of the package by twelve percent.
Her assistant, Cora, placed it on the desk with both eyebrows raised.
"This is the Presley-Jackson thing."
Eleanor looked over the top of her glasses. "The what thing?"
"Michael Jackson's son. Lisa Marie Presley's son. Elvis's grandson." Cora lowered her voice despite the office being mostly empty. "The seven-year-old."
"Mm."
Cora understood that sound. It meant Eleanor had already begun disliking the situation professionally.
"There is a letter from Lisa Marie Presley's attorney," Cora said. "And a handwritten note from Lisa Marie herself."
"No publicist?"
"No."
"No photo?"
"No."
"No sentence using the word miracle?"
Cora checked the envelope again. "Not unless the attorney hid it in paragraph four."
Eleanor removed her glasses.
A strange package, then.
She had been an agent long enough to distrust most forms of strange. Strange usually meant someone wanted ordinary work done at twice the speed for half the honesty. But sometimes strange meant somebody had made an actual decision before calling New York. She respected that, even when she expected the decision to be bad.
"Leave it," she said. "I'll look."
Cora did not move.
"Cora."
"I'm just saying, if it is terrible, we should maybe decline in a way that does not make the King of Pop angry."
"I have declined Pulitzer finalists. I can decline a child."
"Can you decline that child?"
Eleanor looked at the box.
That, of course, was the problem. Nobody in publishing would read the name Julian Presley-Jackson as only a name. Names carried rooms with them. This one carried music videos, marriages, allegations, Graceland, Neverland, headlines, moonwalks, white gloves, black curls, blue eyes in tabloid photographs, and an entire country's habit of confusing proximity with ownership.
She opened the attorney letter first.
It was careful. Very careful. The child had written the material himself. The family was not seeking a ghostwriter. The family was not seeking a vanity arrangement. The family would consider representation only if the agent believed the work had genuine commercial and literary value. No publicity was to be pursued. No editor was to be contacted without approval. Copyright and all underlying intellectual property rights remained solely with Julian Michael Presley-Jackson, controlled by his guardian until majority.
The next paragraph was even less friendly.
Any publishing discussion was to be limited, at first instance, to English-language print publication of the submitted manuscript. No transfer of character rights. No transfer of series rights. No film, television, theatrical, audio, merchandising, game, electronic, sequel, prequel, spin-off, or derivative rights. No use of Julian's photograph, age, family name, likeness, voice, or biography in marketing materials without written guardian approval. No work-for-hire language. No "as told to" framing. No adult collaborator presented or implied.
Eleanor read that paragraph twice.
Then she read it a third time, because publishing people were trained to admire fences only after walking into them.
Cora, still hovering by the door with the dangerous curiosity of a person who knew where all the office envelopes were kept, said, "Is that normal?"
"No," Eleanor said.
"Bad no or good no?"
"Prepared no."
Cora made a face. "Prepared is worse. Prepared means lawyers have had breakfast."
"Prepared means someone in that house knows what happens when adults think a child's work is easier to own than the child."
Cora stopped smiling.
Eleanor turned the page.
Then she read Lisa Marie's note.
Ms. Markham,
My son wrote this. I am his mother before I am anything else. If your first instinct is that this is impossible, that's fine. Mine was too. Please read enough to decide whether the pages are real. If they are not, send them back. If they are, call me before you call anyone else.

Eleanor sat back.
That was not how vanity sounded.
Vanity asked for admiration. Fear asked for a locked door.
She opened the manuscript.
The title page was ordinary. The author name was not. She turned it quickly, because staring at famous names too long made them perform.
The first page began.
Eleanor read the opening paragraph.
Then the second.
Then, because she had trained herself across twenty years not to be seduced by a premise, she stopped and made a note on a yellow pad.
Voice: immediate. Funny. Clean line. Not adult pretending to be child?
She kept reading.
At 9:41, Cora came in to ask whether Eleanor wanted coffee and found her on page twelve.
"Coffee?"
"Yes."
Cora waited.
Eleanor did not look up.
"Is it bad?"
"No."
Cora's eyebrows rose.
"Is it good?"
Eleanor turned a page.
"Get the coffee."
Cora left.
By page twenty-six, Eleanor had stopped looking for the trick and started looking for the seams. That was what experience taught you. Every impossible manuscript had seams somewhere. A parent wrote the funny bits. A tutor handled structure. A journalist polished the sentences. A child supplied the charming idea and adults built the house around it.
But the pages did not have adult seams.
They had something worse.
They had child fingerprints on adult architecture.
A joke arrived half a beat earlier than an adult would have placed it. A description of fear came out sideways, through a shoelace and a bad sandwich. The mythological logic was too assured, too comfortable with power behaving badly. And Percy Jackson - stubborn, funny, biracial without explanation, angry at authority before he knew authority's name - did not read like a marketing decision. He read like a boy someone had needed to invent before the boy made trouble in real life.
Eleanor looked again at the author name.
Julian Michael Presley-Jackson.
Well, she thought, that explains some of the trouble.
She disliked the thought immediately because it was too neat. Neat explanations were how adults killed good books. The pages were not good because the child came from famous blood. If anything, the blood made the pages harder to trust. The book had to fight through the name to be seen. Somehow, irritatingly, it was winning.
At 10:32, she called Cora through the intercom.
"Hold my eleven."
"You have lunch with Don at twelve."
"Move it."
"Is the seven-year-old ruining the schedule?"
"Comprehensively."
Cora appeared in the doorway. "How much are we reading?"
Eleanor slid the first thirty pages toward her.
"Enough to tell me whether I've lost my mind."
Cora took them with the expression of an assistant being handed either history or a workplace injury.
"And if you haven't?"
Eleanor looked at the white box, at the clean stack still waiting inside it, at the attorney letter that had tried to put a fence around a child before New York could sell tickets.
"Then we call his mother."

February 14th, 1998 - 7:52 a.m.
Julian turned eight with blue icing on his thumb and New York holding on line two.
This was not ideal birthday practice.
Birthdays, according to Benjamin, should begin with presents, continue through cake, and end with someone admitting that the birthday person had been correct about something important. Riley had amended this to say that birthday persons were not automatically correct because that would create tyranny. Marcus, who had arrived early carrying a card he had clearly signed in the car, asked whether tyranny included extra pancakes. Danny said history suggested yes.
Consuela made pancakes anyway.
The kitchen filled with the smell of butter and warm syrup. Balloons bobbed against the ceiling like escaped thoughts. A Power Rangers birthday card from Marcus sat near Julian's plate, the Green Ranger standing dramatically on the front as if he too had concerns about publishing law. Riley had given Julian a new pencil case and written in the card: For the government documents. Benjamin had drawn a hydra with six heads, each labelled with a different emotion. One head was just called Hungry. Julian considered it the most accurate.
Michael came through the side door at 7:31 carrying a wrapped box and the careful brightness of a father trying not to bring the rest of his life into his son's morning. He hugged Julian first. Then he hugged Riley and Benjamin, who called him Michael and immediately asked whether his present contained lasers.
"No lasers," Michael said.
Benjamin sighed. "Society continues to decline."
Lisa was laughing when the phone rang.
The first ring did not change the room.
The second did.
Adults had different silences for different calls. Julian knew the good ones by now. A friend calling from Nashville made Lisa's shoulders lower. A publicist made her mouth flatten. A lawyer made the kitchen grow corners. This ring made Lisa look toward the hall and then toward the white manuscript box on the sideboard.
Eleanor Markham had said she would call today only if she had to.
Apparently New York had decided it had to.
Lisa wiped her hands on a towel.
"Eat," she told Julian.
"I am eating."
"Eat like you are not listening."
That was unreasonable. He was eight now, not fictional.
Michael sat beside him. His knee bounced once under the table, stopped, then started again. Julian put one blue-icing thumb lightly on his father's wrist.
Michael stilled.
"Cake first," Julian said.
"It's morning."
"I'm eight. The law changed."
Danny pointed a fork at him. "Strong argument. Poor constitutional foundation."
Riley leaned toward Marcus. "He's distracting Michael."
"I know," Marcus whispered. "It is advanced."
Lisa answered the phone in the hall.
Her voice changed at once.
Not bigger. Smaller. More dangerous because it used less room.
"Ms. Markham."
The kitchen began pretending not to listen, which was one of the least convincing things a family could do. Consuela flipped a pancake with judicial force. Priscilla picked up her coffee but did not drink it. Michael looked at Julian's plate as if pancakes could provide legal guidance. Riley ate one blueberry at a time, a system she used only during emergencies.
Julian looked at his presents.
Michael's box sat wrapped in silver paper. It was the size of a shoebox and too light to contain shoes. Lisa's present had already been opened: a leather folio small enough for a child to carry and serious enough for adults to regret underestimating it. Priscilla had given him a first edition of D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, carefully sourced and wrapped in blue ribbon. Danny had given him a proper desk lamp because, he said, genius was useless if it destroyed your posture. Consuela had given him a handwritten recipe for arroz con pollo, which she said was not a present but cultural insurance.
The phone call went on.
Julian ate a pancake.
It tasted like butter, syrup, and the knowledge that someone in New York had read Percy without knowing that Grover's nervous chewing had come from watching Benjamin attack a pencil during homework.
Lisa came back into the kitchen holding the cordless phone against her shoulder.
"She wants to represent it," Lisa said.
No one spoke.
Outside, a gardener's machine started up somewhere beyond the house, buzzing at an ugly pitch that made Julian's fingers curl around his fork.
"Not publish," Lisa added quickly, eyes on Julian. "Represent. She thinks it should go to editors. Carefully. She wants the full manuscript when it's done. She says the partial is enough to begin private conversations if we agree."
Michael exhaled.
Priscilla set her cup down with no sound at all.
"Private," Priscilla said.
Lisa nodded. "That was her word."
"Private until it isn't," Danny said.
"Also her implication."
Benjamin raised his hand, because Marcus had infected him with procedure.
"Does this mean Percy is famous?"
"No," Julian said.
Everyone looked at him.
He did not like being looked at over unfinished things. A book not yet complete was a door without hinges. People could admire the wood all they liked; it still did not open.
"It means," he said, choosing words small enough to fit his age and honest enough not to rot, "adults want to read more."
Riley smiled at him. Not teasing. Not proud in the loud way. She smiled as if he had answered a question correctly on behalf of all of them.
Lisa covered the phone. "Do you want me to tell her yes?"
There were three possible answers, and Julian saw them without naming the process. Yes, because the book needed a door. No, because doors had teeth. Not yet, because adults understood delay better than fear.
He looked at Michael.
Michael gave him nothing but his face.
That was new. That was trust.
Julian looked at Lisa.
"Tell her yes," he said. "But not fast. Properly."
Lisa's smile arrived like a blade being put away.
She lifted the phone.
"He says yes," she told New York. "And I say this: no deadlines that eat him. No publicity. No editor gets his phone number. No meeting without me, his father, or a lawyer present. If anyone says prodigy in a room with him, we leave."
A pause.
Lisa listened.
"Good," she said. "Then we can talk."
Consuela slid another pancake onto Julian's plate.
"For strength," she said.
"I am full."
"No. Estas representado. Es un hambre diferente."
[No. You are represented. It is a different hunger.]
Benjamin nodded solemnly. "That seems medically true."
Michael laughed, and the whole kitchen loosened around it.
Not all the way. Not enough to become ordinary again. But enough that syrup moved, forks scraped, Marcus whispered that represented sounded like a monster type, and Riley told him monsters usually did not have retainers unless they were dentists.
Julian looked at the manuscript box on the sideboard.
The book had not left the house completely.
But it had found the door.

February 18th, 1998 - 6:28 p.m.
By the time Stephanie Owens Lurie reached page forty, the office had emptied into the particular New York evening rhythm of coats, elevators, and people pretending they would not read manuscripts on the subway.
She should have gone home twenty minutes ago.
There were three picture-book proposals in her bag, a meeting note from sales folded into her planner, and a memo about spring positioning that used the word opportunity four times in one paragraph, which Stephanie considered a sign of either optimism or structural weakness. She had a life outside the office in theory. Publishing people often did. It was simply difficult to locate under the piles.
The Percy Jackson pages sat on her desk.
The accompanying note from Eleanor Markham was irritatingly short.
Stephanie,
Do not react to the name. Read the pages. Then call me.

This was the sort of note agents wrote when they knew they had a hook and wanted to seem above hooks. Stephanie had rolled her eyes before opening the manuscript, because rolling one's eyes was sometimes the only defence an editor had against being manipulated by New York colleagues with good paper stock.
Then she had read the first chapter.
Now she was on page forty, her coat still on the back of her chair, her coffee cold, one shoe half-off under the desk because she had forgotten the rest of the motion.
The problem was not that the pages were competent.
Competent would have been easy. Competent child celebrity novel: decline politely, suggest an adult collaborator, protect the house from expensive nonsense. Competent was common enough, even when people mistook it for rare.
The problem was that the pages knew what they were doing.
They moved.
Percy moved.
The voice had that thing middle-grade books lived or died by: the private feeling that the narrator was telling the reader something before adults could come in and ruin it. The jokes were not pasted over the fear. They came from inside it. The gods, when they entered the story's edges, did not sparkle. They loomed. Power behaved like power. Ancient things did not become cute because children were looking at them.
Stephanie made a note in the margin.
Tone: funny but not small. Mythic pressure under child voice.
Then another.
Percy biracial - not explained, lived. Strong.
She leaned back.
That was the other thing. Race was present without standing on a chair to announce itself. Percy noticed rooms. He noticed who got believed, who got called difficult, who got watched too closely, who was expected to be grateful. The manuscript did not lecture. It simply placed a boy in the world and let the world behave. Stephanie had seen adult writers attempt this and come away with cardboard and guilt.
She looked again at the cover sheet.
Julian Michael Presley-Jackson.
Eight years old.
"Absolutely not," she said to the empty office.
Then she turned the page.
At 7:06, she called Eleanor.
"I hate you," Stephanie said when Eleanor picked up.
"That sounds promising."
"Is he eight?"
"As of Saturday."
"Do not say that like it makes this better."
"It makes it more legally interesting."
Stephanie pinched the bridge of her nose. "Is there any possibility this is a ghostwriter?"
"I looked for seams. So did Cora. If there is an adult underneath it, the adult has chosen to imitate a brilliant child by making choices most adults are not smart enough to make."
"That is not reassuring."
"I wasn't trying to reassure you."
Stephanie stood and walked to the window. Below, New York kept doing New York things: taxis pressing their horns into the evening, lights stacking themselves up buildings, people carrying bags and deadlines and resentments down the street. Somewhere on the other coast, an eight-year-old child had apparently written a book about a boy who made gods seem like badly managed relatives with weather privileges.
"Hyperion will want it," she said.
"Yes."
"Disney will want to know whether the name is exploitable."
"Lisa Marie will murder the first person who uses that word in her presence. Metaphorically. Probably."
"Good for her."
Stephanie looked down at the manuscript again.
A commercially obvious concept. Mythology in the modern world. A boy lead with jokes and pain. A built-in celebrity angle so large it could crush the book if mishandled. Film potential, if one wanted to be vulgar this early. Series potential, if one wanted to be accurate.
"How complete is it?"
"Partial plus synopsis and chapter outline. The family says he is still writing."
"Children's books do not usually go to auction off a partial by an eight-year-old."
"Michael Jackson's son does not usually write a partial like this."
Stephanie hated how true that was.
"If we move," she said, "we move quietly. I want the full manuscript. I want to meet Lisa first. Not the child. Lisa. I want to know whether they understand what will happen when this gets out."
"They understand better than most."
"No," Stephanie said. "Most people understand attention as a resource. This family understands it as a weather system. Different skill set."
Eleanor was quiet for a moment.
"That's why I called you."
Stephanie sat down again.
On page forty-one, Percy was angry in a way that made him funnier, not less vulnerable. Stephanie underlined one sentence and wrote Yes beside it before she could stop herself.
That was how books got you. Not through the premise. Through the place where you forgot to defend yourself.
"Send me everything else as soon as they allow it," she said. "And Eleanor?"
"Yes?"
"Do not let this become a celebrity book. If it does, it dies."
"I know."
Stephanie looked at the name on the page.
Julian Michael Presley-Jackson.
A name that could sell anything once.
A book, if it was real, had to sell itself every time after.
"Then let's try not to kill it," she said.
She did not hang up immediately.
That would have been too easy, and publishing was built almost entirely out of things that should have been easy if human beings had not invented departments.
"Send me the family restrictions again," Stephanie said.
Eleanor made a noise that might have been amusement if one were generous and had recently slept. "You are going to hate them."
"Good. I prefer honest obstacles."
The fax came through six minutes later in the small room beside editorial, where machines hummed and assistants discovered how much of adult civilisation depended on toner. Stephanie stood over the warm pages with Marjorie Bell from rights and a junior lawyer from Disney Publishing whose tie had surrendered sometime after lunch.
Marjorie read the first page and laughed once.
"They have reserved everything."
"Define everything," the lawyer said.
"Characters. Series. Film. Television. Stage. Audio approval. Foreign approval. Merchandising. Games. Electronic. Educational editions. Julian's likeness. Family biography. They have even blocked language implying adult authorship."
The lawyer adjusted his tie as if the contract could see weakness. "That is not a submission packet. That is a moat."
Stephanie took the page from him. The restrictions had teeth, yes, but not vanity teeth. They were not asking for more money because the name was famous. They were asking for less ownership because the name had survived too many people who smiled while reaching.
"Can we publish under those restrictions?" she asked.
Marjorie looked at the manuscript on Stephanie's desk, then back at the fax. "Print rights, clean term, strong reversion, separate approvals, no character grab. Yes. We can publish. We cannot build an empire out of him without permission."
"That sounds like a moral improvement," Stephanie said.
The lawyer gave her the wounded look of a man who had not expected morality before dinner.
"Disney will ask about film," he said.
"Disney can ask," Stephanie said. "They cannot assume."
"There is a difference?"
Marjorie smiled without warmth. "Only to people who have been sued."
Stephanie looked through the window toward the darkening office, where desks held slush piles, galleys, sales memos, postcards from authors, and the stubborn evidence that books still entered the world by way of tired people arguing over paper. Somewhere in California, a child had written a story that wanted to run. Somewhere else in the same family history, men had lost songs, names, photographs, dignity, pieces of themselves, because the person across the table had called a theft an opportunity.
She wrote on the top of the fax:
BOOK FIRST. RIGHTS SEPARATE. NO CIRCUS.
Then she underlined it.
"We make an offer on the book," she said. "Not the boy. Not the family. Not the future lunch boxes. The book."
Marjorie nodded.
The lawyer looked unconvinced, but lawyers often did before contracts taught them humility.
Stephanie returned to her office, sat down in front of the manuscript, and read page forty-two.

Lisa Marie's House, Calabasas, California
February 20th, 1998 - 8:41 p.m.
The fax machine had become the loudest person in the house.
It sat on the small side table near the kitchen phone, spitting out warm paper with the irritated rhythm of a machine that believed it had been hired beneath its abilities. Lisa had moved it there after New York began calling during dinner, because if adult machinery insisted on entering her house, it could do so where Consuela could glare at it.
Consuela did glare.
"This machine complains more than Benjamin."
Benjamin looked wounded. "I contain nuance."
"You contain syrup," Riley said. "It's on your sleeve."
Marcus leaned closer to the fax as another page emerged. "What if it is a coded message?"
"It says Cover Sheet," Danny said.
"That's what a coded message would say first."
Julian sat at the table with the black notebook open and his socks mismatched because he had stopped caring about foot politics after page two hundred. The ending was closer now. Not close enough to trust. Endings were traps. They looked like doors and then demanded payment in emotional honesty.
The kitchen was crowded for a Friday night. Lisa stood by the phone. Michael had come over after rehearsal, his hat on the counter, his attention split between Julian and the fax machine. Priscilla sat with a legal pad in front of her, making notes whenever the adults used a word she did not trust. Danny had been given the job of reading aloud only the non-dangerous portions, which immediately made Benjamin ask whether the dangerous portions had swords.
The fax finished coughing.
Lisa tore off the pages.
"It's from Eleanor," she said.
Michael's knee started bouncing under the table.
Julian reached one foot out and pressed his sock against Michael's shoe.
The bouncing stopped.
Lisa read silently first. Julian appreciated that. Some adults treated letters like theatre. Lisa treated them like weather reports before deciding whether the children needed coats.
Her face did not change much.
That meant it mattered.
"Hyperion wants an exclusive first read of the full manuscript when it's finished," she said. "Stephanie Owens Lurie read the partial. She wants to meet with us privately. No press. No announcement. No photographs. Eleanor says she is the right kind of interested."
"What kind is that?" Riley asked.
Priscilla answered before Lisa could. "The kind that wants the book more than the circus."
"Good," Benjamin said. "Circuses smell weird."
Marcus nodded. "And clowns are structurally suspicious."
No one argued.
Lisa turned to the second page.
Her mouth did the small thing it did when a person had tried to be clever in writing and failed within reach of her pencil.
"They are not asking for film or television rights," she said. "Not yet. Stephanie's note says she understands those are separate. English-language print first. Possibly foreign later by approval. Audio separately by approval. No character licensing. No use of Julian's photograph or age in catalogue copy without written consent."
"Catalogue copy," Benjamin repeated. "Is that like when a shop describes trousers?"
"Yes," Danny said. "But with more ways to disappoint everyone."
Priscilla held out her hand. Lisa gave her the fax.
Priscilla read with the expression of a woman smelling a milk carton she already expected to be bad.
"They have left room to ask later," she said.
"Everyone leaves room to ask later," Michael said quietly.
His voice carried old rooms with it. Studios. Lawyers. Men with bright smiles and soft hands. Men who called masters assets and artists talent, as if talent were a weather event that arrived without a body attached.
Julian pressed his pencil into the notebook until the point darkened.
"They can ask later," he said.
Lisa looked at him.
"Asking is not having," Julian said.
The room let that settle.
Priscilla took her legal pad and, beneath the earlier list, wrote another heading.
PRESLEY-JACKSON LITERARY HOLDINGS?
The question mark was small, but Julian saw it. He saw the way she stared at the words, not as a company yet, not as a thing with filing fees and letterhead and adults who said pursuant when they meant no, but as a box in the future where Percy could live without strangers rearranging the furniture.
"For later," Priscilla said, because she had noticed him noticing.
"How much later?" Benjamin asked.
"When adults have stopped being exhausting," Riley said.
Danny winced. "So never."
Lisa kept reading.
"They believe it could be a series."
Julian's pencil paused.
There it was.
The adults had seen the road before he had shown them the map.
Michael looked at him, and pride moved through his face first, then fear, then the disciplined effort not to make either of those things Julian's job.
"A series," Michael said softly.
Julian looked at the notebook.
The Sea of Monsters already had a shape in his head. Not a full one. A tide line. A boat. A girl who would need more room than the first book had given her. A camp that could not stay safe simply because children wanted it to.
One book was never the whole war.
That was the only thought he allowed himself.
Then he put the pencil down.
"They cannot have the ending until it is right."
Lisa's head lifted.
"No. They cannot."
Priscilla smiled faintly. "Good. The first useful sentence anyone has said tonight."
"I said clowns were suspicious," Marcus objected.
"Useful in a narrower context."
Danny reached for the fax and read the next line. "Eleanor asks whether Julian can provide the complete manuscript by April for a potential late 1998 publication window."
He did not read the next sentence aloud at once.
That was enough to make Lisa's eyes sharpen.
"Danny."
He looked at Julian, then at Lisa. "They also ask whether the family would consider allowing Hyperion to position the book as the first in a planned series in the internal sales material. Not public copy. Internal only."
"No," Priscilla said.
"Maybe," Lisa said at the same time.
Michael looked between them.
The fax machine hummed smugly.
Julian knew the answer before he had the words. If adults did not know there were more books, they would treat the first one like a lucky accident. If they knew too much, they would start putting furniture in rooms he had not built yet.
"They can know there are more stories," he said.
Priscilla's eyes came to him.
"Not titles," Julian said. "Not plots. Not promises. Just that Percy is not finished after one book."
Lisa studied him for a long second.
"That is a very careful answer," she said.
Julian looked back at the notebook. "It is a careful question."
The room tightened.
April.
A month and change. Adults liked dates because dates looked like control. Julian did not dislike dates. He disliked adults who used them like hands on the back of a child's neck.
Lisa looked at him.
Michael did too.
Priscilla did not. She looked at Lisa, because she understood mothers as the first line of defence.
"No," Lisa said.
It was beautiful in its simplicity.
The word arrived before worry could dress itself as opportunity.
Julian loved her for that with a force so sudden he had to look down at the table.
"No," she repeated, already reaching for the phone. "They can ask. They cannot have."
"Mum," Julian said.
She stopped.
Everyone stopped with her.
He kept his hand flat on the notebook. The cover was warm from his palm.
"April is fine," he said. "If it's right."
Lisa's jaw shifted.
"Juju."
"Not because they asked."
He looked up then.
The kitchen had become very still. Too still. He preferred noise. Noise gave people somewhere to put fear. Silence made it stand in the open.
"Because the book is almost done," he said. "And because Percy does not like waiting either."
Benjamin whispered, "Relatable."
Riley kicked him under the table without looking.
Lisa did not smile. Good. This was not a smiling thing yet.
"School stays," she said.
"Yes."
"Television stays."
"Yes."
"Friends stay."
Marcus sat straighter.
"Yes."
"Sleep stays."
Julian hesitated.
Lisa's eyes narrowed.
"Yes," he said, with less enthusiasm than the question deserved.
"Food stays," Consuela said from the stove.
"That was not in question."
"Everything is in question with writers."
Danny raised his glass. "I support the Minister of Food."
The room loosened by a fraction.
Lisa picked up the phone and dialled Eleanor's number from the paper. She did not leave the kitchen. That was important. She made New York come into the room where pancakes had happened and birthday cards still leaned against a fruit bowl, where the fax machine sat under Consuela's suspicion, where Julian's mismatched socks pressed against the chair leg.
When Eleanor answered, Lisa did not say hello the way people said hello to opportunity.
She said it the way people opened a gate with one hand and kept the other on the lock.
"April is not a deadline," Lisa said. "It is a possibility. Write that down before we continue."
She listened.
"And no one says series commitment. No one says franchise. No one says built-in marketing. This is a book written by my son. If Hyperion wants to publish it, we talk about publishing. Everything else stays outside the room until I invite it in."
Michael's smile was tiny.
Priscilla's was colder.
Julian picked up his pencil again.
He turned to a fresh page, not because the old page was finished, but because sometimes a new page was the only way to keep adults from thinking they had entered the story.
At the top, he wrote: Chapter Nineteen.
The line underneath waited.
The house began moving again around him. Riley asked Marcus whether clowns counted as monsters if they worked weekends. Benjamin argued that monsters with jobs deserved labour protections. Danny said he was not qualified to comment on clown employment law. Consuela told them if clowns entered her kitchen, she would resign from civilisation.
Julian wrote the first sentence of the chapter.
Then the fax machine rang again.
Everyone looked at it.
Nobody moved.
Lisa, still on the phone with New York, covered the receiver and stared at the machine as it began to print another page.
"No," she said to the room, to Eleanor, to Hyperion, to the fax, to every adult system that believed a child with talent was an invitation. "Not until he finishes dinner."
Julian looked down at his plate.
Consuela had put arroz con pollo there at some point, as if feeding him were not an interruption to history but the condition under which history was allowed to proceed.
He picked up his fork.
New York waited.
