Chapter 422: Sucrose
If someone were asked who the best alchemist in Mondstadt was, the first name that would come to mind would undoubtedly be Albedo.
But what about after Albedo?
If you exclude the long-established veterans and old masters, then among the younger generation, the most noteworthy person would probably be Sucrose.
Albedo had once said something along these lines:
"If Timaeus studies for another twenty years, he'll finally be able to replace his current textbook with the one Sucrose uses."
In other words, even Timaeus, who was already regarded as a master by many people, was still at least twenty years behind Sucrose.
To outsiders, Sucrose was a shy, quiet alchemist who showed little interest in other people.
When speaking with others, she often stammered and struggled to express herself.
The reality, however, was exactly the opposite.
She possessed an extraordinarily strong curiosity about everything.
And that thirst for knowledge was precisely what Albedo admired.
Being satisfied with the status quo only led to stagnation.
Only by carrying an endless desire to learn could she continue advancing along the path of alchemy.
Unfortunately, while alchemy allowed for endless experimentation, human relationships did not.
When dealing with people, there were factors such as wording, etiquette, emotions, and countless other variables that could not be quantified.
She had no opportunity for trial and error.
As a result, she began avoiding these unpredictable factors whenever possible, choosing instead to satisfy her curiosity through methods she understood.
For example, observation.
In order to determine whether the bartender Diona of the Cat's Tail tavern differed genetically from herself, Sucrose secretly observed and followed her for an entire month.
In the end, she reached the following conclusion:
"The hereditary principles appear similar, but the origins are different. The connection to felines warrants further study. Additional note: Bone samples remain unobtainable."
She also made another discovery:
Cats are adorable.
In short, many people viewed this shy young woman as someone extremely difficult to approach.
There was one more important thing worth mentioning.
Her specialty was Bio-Alchemy.
Compared to creation, bio-alchemy focused more on modification.
Through this discipline, alchemists could uncover hidden strengths within living organisms and then amplify or combine those traits.
The result could be effects far more astonishing than ordinary alchemy.
If one were to classify things more precisely, it actually resembled the techniques Silver was currently using.
Both specialized in improving and cultivating known—and unknown—animals, plants, and monsters.
In other words, within an incredibly short period of time, Silver had already surpassed the so-called alchemical prodigy Timaeus and was rapidly approaching Sucrose's level.
His successful modification of the Whopperflower had even allowed him to surpass Sucrose and reach an entirely new height.
What made it even more astonishing was that Silver had never studied bio-alchemy directly.
Since the relevant materials had been entrusted to Sucrose by Albedo, Silver had never gained access to them.
Everything he learned came from examining the material before and after the missing sections and independently deducing the omitted knowledge in between.
. . .
Today, Sucrose was not spending her time in the laboratory as usual.
Instead, she had come to the area near Dragonspine.
Hidden behind a tree, she secretly observed the camp at the mountain's entrance.
Previously, the place had been practically lawless.
All sorts of suspicious people came and went there, quietly plotting schemes unknown to others.
However, after Bai Luo's recent stunt of "detaining" Kaeya, the Knights of Favonius had temporarily requisitioned the camp.
Although ownership was later returned to the chef who originally managed it, the camp was no longer the chaotic place it once had been.
Aside from adventurers, scholars, and a handful of hunters, very few suspicious individuals could now be seen.
Only occasionally would someone wearing a Fatui uniform come down from the mountain to purchase alchemical materials.
It had to be said that without even intending to, Bai Luo had once again done something beneficial.
The reason Sucrose had come here was because of an adventurer named Tommy.
While asking her to create a cold-resistance potion, he had mentioned something interesting about the camp.
At first, Sucrose hadn't paid much attention.
Thanks to Albedo, she herself often visited the area.
Though she had never been particularly comfortable with the atmosphere there.
Until...
"The Great Snowboar King! That's a legendary creature passed down among wilderness hunters from ages ago. I never imagined it actually existed. I heard it took a whole group of people working together to capture it."
Tommy had originally used the story merely as an excuse to keep talking with Sucrose a little longer.
To Tommy's surprise, Sucrose's attention wasn't on him at all.
Instead, her thoughts were entirely occupied by the Great Snowboar King.
Would the bones of the Great Snowboar King be different from those of an ordinary boar?
Could they be perfectly connected together?
After absentmindedly humoring Tommy for a while, Sucrose arrived at what was, for her, one of the most important days of all.
Her once-every-three-days "social interaction" day.
As usual, after collecting bones from the butcher's market, the Adventurers' Guild, and the hunters of Springvale, she did not take the bloodstained skeletons home to assemble them.
Instead, after giving them some basic cleaning, she hurried toward the Dragonspine camp.
The bones of the Great Snowboar King continued to occupy her thoughts.
If she couldn't see them with her own eyes—or better yet, obtain them herself—she was certain she wouldn't sleep well for a very long time.
After noticing that the atmosphere in the camp had improved considerably compared to before, Sucrose finally relaxed a little.
She straightened her clothes, trying to make herself appear as proper and presentable as possible.
Then she adjusted her glasses and stepped inside.
However, the occasional twitch of her animal-like ears revealed just how nervous she really was.
"H-Hello... s-sorry to bother you... wh-what kind of animal did this b-bone come from?"
As she passed a hunter's stall, the neatly cleaned bones on display left her slightly disappointed.
To Sucrose, the finest specimens were the ones that still had traces of flesh and blood attached.
Fortunately, she spotted a pig's hind leg nearby, still covered in fur.
Judging from the coloration, it wasn't from an ordinary wild boar.
It appeared to be from one of Dragonspine's snowboars.
"Hilichurl thigh bone. Very durable. Makes a great weapon."
The hunter picked up a pristine white femur and proudly introduced it.
The explanation disappointed Sucrose.
She already had Hilichurl bones.
In fact, the ones in her collection were of even better quality than this specimen.
"Th-This pig leg... could I buy it?"
Her ears twitched slightly beneath her hair as she spoke.
Even though it wasn't from the Great Snowboar King, the specimen was preserved so well that she couldn't resist purchasing it.
"Certainly! Would you like me to remove the fur for you?"
Money really did make a difference.
The moment the hunter saw the shiny Mora Sucrose produced, a broad smile immediately appeared on his face.
He even enthusiastically pulled out a cleaver and offered to help.
After all, the young woman standing before him looked scholarly and delicate—hardly someone who seemed capable of processing animal parts herself.
"N-No, thank you... I-I can handle it myself."
She had specifically purchased it because of its intact condition.
There was no way she would allow someone to damage the specimen's completeness.
While the hunter wrapped up the pig leg for her, Sucrose spoke again.
"Sir... do you know anything about the Great Snowboar King?"
