Genshin Impact: I'm The Envoy of Snezhnaya
Chapter 420: This Guy's Handwriting Is Really Awful
"Here, take this."
Bai Luo glanced at the cigarette in Kaeya's hand and frowned slightly.
He had never been interested in that sort of thing.
In fact, he had once had the chance to learn how to smoke.
That was until one of his friends gave him a pack of counterfeit cigarettes and encouraged him to smoke half the pack in one go.
For the entire week afterward, speaking had been difficult for him.
Ever since then, he had developed an aversion to cigarettes.
It had gotten so bad that even the smell of smoke made his throat uncomfortable.
He had successfully achieved the feat of completely quitting smoking before ever properly learning how to smoke in the first place.
"And this is...?"
Catching the bundle the Ausbilder tossed over, Kaeya carefully opened it.
Inside, however, were neither mutilated body parts nor the severed head of the Eremite leader as he had expected.
Instead, it contained several well-preserved books and notebooks.
"Alchemy notes?"
Seeing the familiar alchemical symbol on the covers, Kaeya immediately thought of the recent incident on Dragonspine.
It seemed these books were among the ones lost by the Knights of Favonius' Chief Alchemist.
"A few days ago, I borrowed some books from Mr. Albedo. I've finished reading these ones. Please return them to him for me. Tell him..."
Bai Luo paused briefly before continuing,
"...I'll return the rest after I've finished reading them. I absolutely won't damage any of the books."
"..."
Kaeya was aware of the theft at Albedo's camp.
At the time, Jean had specifically sent him and a team to investigate.
The scene had truly opened his eyes.
Forget the books, even the toilet paper had been taken.
The only things left behind were a few sheets of drawing paper.
It could only be described as shocking.
A few books?
And you have the nerve to say that?
"Is that all?"
After storing away the alchemy notes, Kaeya asked instinctively.
"The rest can wait until I'm done reading them."
Bai Luo answered as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
Once again, Kaeya was given a masterclass in shamelessness.
"So, I can leave now?"
Glancing at the still-unlit cigarette in his hand, Kaeya asked.
Originally, he had assumed he would have to engage in a battle of wits with the Instructor, probably sacrificing a few more brain cells before escaping safely.
Unexpectedly, Bai Luo hadn't made things difficult for him at all.
"Go ahead. What else? You expect me to feed you? Supplies on Dragonspine aren't exactly abundant. I barely have enough to eat myself."
Bai Luo waved dismissively and turned away, disappearing into the snowy landscape without leaving so much as a footprint behind.
Only after the blizzard intensified again, snowflakes repeatedly striking his face, did Kaeya finally realize—
The man had actually left.
Looking once at the Eremite corpses, now being buried beneath fresh snow again, and then at the books in his hands, Kaeya pocketed the half-pack of cigarettes, extinguished the campfire, and made his way down the mountain.
By the time he reached the base of Dragonspine, the camp was no longer occupied by miscellaneous personnel.
Instead, it was packed with Knights of Favonius.
After hearing Rosaria's report about the situation on the mountain, Jean had immediately mobilized a large force of knights to conduct a rescue operation.
Kaeya might seem unreliable at times, but he played a vital role within the Knights of Favonius.
Jean wasn't about to sit back and watch him become another victim of the Ausbilder.
However, when she saw Kaeya casually walking down the snowy path, she looked somewhat surprised.
It felt rather like...
A child carried off by a wolf somehow climbing back down the mountain on his own.
The moment Kaeya saw Jean, he more or less understood what had happened.
Handing the books over to her, he quietly explained a few things.
Then he clapped his hands, drawing everyone's attention.
"Thank you all for your concern. To show my appreciation, tonight I'll be buying everyone a drink at Angel's Share. Please don't miss it."
Whatever else could be said about him, Kaeya was excellent at dealing with people.
At least eighty percent of the Knights present had volunteered to come specifically to rescue him.
After all, Mondstadters loved alcohol.
And Kaeya, who spent so much time in taverns, had accumulated countless drinking buddies over the years.
His announcement immediately triggered a wave of cheers.
After all, who could possibly refuse the wine from Master Diluc's tavern?
The tense, sword-drawn atmosphere was dissolved in an instant by a single sentence from Kaeya.
Meanwhile, the Fatui who had secretly gathered nearby saw this outcome and quietly withdrew as well.
If possible, they had no desire to start a war either.
After returning to Mondstadt, Jean sent someone to summon Albedo, who had been giving a lesson to Sucrose.
Perhaps worried that he might come into conflict with the Ausbilder hiding in the mountains, Jean specifically instructed him to remain at the foot of Dragonspine as much as possible for the time being.
Considering that Sucrose had recently encountered a bottleneck in her alchemical studies, Albedo ultimately agreed to Jean's suggestion.
"He asked you to return these to me?"
Upon hearing that Bai Luo had entrusted Kaeya with delivering the books back to him, Albedo frowned slightly.
In truth, if Bai Luo was making proper use of the books and notes, Albedo didn't particularly mind him taking them.
At least during their conversations, he had genuinely sensed that Bai Luo sincerely wanted to learn these subjects.
But it hadn't been very long.
Had he really finished reading this many books already?
Albedo's first assumption was that Bai Luo hadn't studied them seriously and had merely skimmed through them.
However, as he inspected the books for damage, he let out a soft sound of surprise.
Many of these books had been written by him personally, while others had been purchased.
But he had a habit.
He liked to leave notes and comments throughout his books.
Even in works he had written himself, he would often add annotations suggesting alternative possibilities.
This allowed students like Sucrose to gain a more intuitive understanding of the material.
Then he looked at the book in his hand.
Not only had numerous new annotations been added, but some of them directly challenged his own conclusions.
If they had merely been simple objections, that would have been one thing.
But judging from the contents of the notes, the person who wrote them possessed a deep understanding of the material.
Some of the counterarguments were so convincing that even Albedo found himself tempted to immediately conduct experiments to verify them.
"Interesting..."
Carefully setting the book aside, he began examining the others.
Without exception, every notebook and volume contained newly added annotations.
Moreover, the comments were remarkably detailed.
Even measurements and material quantities had been calculated with impressive accuracy.
It gave him a strange illusion that the person who had written these notes felt like… another version of himself.
If Bai Luo truly possessed this level of talent, then Albedo wouldn't particularly mind that he had taken so many of his books without permission.
After all, the entire reason he had compiled these materials in the first place was to cultivate the next generation of alchemists.
He only hoped that next time Bai Luo would choose a different method.
Nobody could endure having their entire collection stolen like that.
And one more thing.
This guy's handwriting is really awful.
