Genshin Impact: I'm The Envoy of Snezhnaya
Chapter 400: The Roaring Sounds in the Dead of Night
"Don't be nervous. I came to the snowy mountain this time for another matter. I won't interfere with your work."
Compared to Anastasia, who loved controlling everything, Vadim cared far less about the authority in his hands.
What he cared about more was whether Bai Luo would interfere with his plans.
If the other party's meddling caused all his arrangements to collapse, it would be extremely painful for him.
Worst of all would be having the blame dumped on his head again.
While taking the fall for one's superior was only natural, nobody wanted to carry an inexplicable black pot.
Only after receiving Bai Luo's assurance did Vadim finally breathe a sigh of relief.
What he didn't know, however, was that in all of Teyvat, Bai Luo's promises were the least trustworthy thing imaginable.
After inspecting the camp, Bai Luo began handling his own business.
Even if he could find Albedo's sketching camp by himself, why would he avoid using subordinates when he had them available?
Besides, there was always the possibility that Jean might contact Albedo somehow and have him relocate his campsite.
What surprised him, however, was that Vadim actually knew of Albedo's existence.
"Lord Harbinger, are you referring to the Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonius?"
Thinking about it, it made sense. Albedo was practically a regular visitor to Dragonspine, so it was inevitable that Vadim's people would run into him at some point.
What Bai Luo found strange was why the two sides had never come into conflict.
"In fact, when we were searching for Durin's remains, we already crossed paths with that kid. But considering his status as the Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonius, we didn't want to affect Lady Signora's plans in Mondstadt, so we avoided provoking him. He seemed to have the same idea, so we've coexisted peacefully this whole time."
Vadim was someone who understood priorities. He knew his main objective was the poisonous dragon Durin, so he refrained from causing trouble.
As for whether Albedo truly shared the same intentions... Bai Luo couldn't say for sure.
After all, the man who looked like a princely gentleman was actually an incredibly scheming mastermind underneath.
"Then do you know where his camp is located?"
Since Vadim's people had already met Albedo face-to-face, they should know where he was staying.
That would make things much simpler.
"You're going to see that kid?"
Bai Luo might have been pleased, but Vadim's heart instantly turned cold.
Didn't you just say you weren't going to cause trouble? Why are you immediately running straight toward it now?
They had witnessed firsthand how troublesome that alchemist could be.
Especially in the past few days, loud explosions had frequently echoed from the direction of his camp.
Even at night, the noise never stopped.
The Fatui also had alchemists among their ranks, so they knew those sounds were the result of failed experiments.
But lately, hadn't his failure rate been a little too high?
To avoid his subordinates getting accidentally caught in the blast, Vadim had strictly forbidden anyone from approaching the area recently.
He wasn't worried about the Harbinger getting accidentally injured, since in the eyes of most Fatui, a Harbinger's strength was comparable to that of a god.
But...
Sigh~ forget it. Who told him this was his superior?
Originally, Vadim wanted to assign some men to escort Bai Luo there, but Bai Luo rejected the suggestion.
This time, Bai Luo only intended to stir up trouble... or rather, deliver a message. Bringing too many people along would make many things inconvenient.
Vadim could only give up on the idea. Instead, he had someone prepare a map for Bai Luo and mark the location of Albedo's camp.
After obtaining the location, Bai Luo didn't hurry to set out.
Reality wasn't like the game. In the game, you could head to Dragonspine whenever you wanted, but reality didn't work that way.
At night, the snowy mountain was far more dangerous than usual.
And that danger didn't mainly come from monsters or bandits, but from the mountain itself.
Even during the day, you couldn't always tell whether the snow-covered ground ahead was a mountain path or a deep pit—let alone at night.
So Bai Luo decided to rest at the camp for the night and head out to find Albedo the next day.
The advance troops already ate fairly well to begin with, and Bai Luo's arrival prompted Vadim to bring out the refrigerated meat that he normally only allowed people to eat during festivals.
Outside, the northern wind howled fiercely, yet inside the tent there was singing, dancing, laughter, and celebration. Amid the cheerful atmosphere, no one would have guessed they were stationed upon a frozen mountain.
In the middle of the revelry, a thunderous rumble echoed from somewhere deep within the snowy mountain, causing all the Fatui officers present to freeze for a moment.
"There it is again..."
Vadim set down the firewater in his hand, helplessness showing faintly on his face.
The expressions of the others were much the same.
Only Bai Luo revealed a thoughtful look.
If he remembered correctly, Vadim had said these sounds were explosions caused by Albedo's failed experiments.
At first, Bai Luo had assumed it was the sound of Klee's bombs.
But now that he thought about it, this noise didn't sound like an explosion from some object at all.
Instead, it sounded more like...
A pounding noise?
In any case, it definitely wasn't an explosion.
Still, he didn't reveal this discovery to the others present. Only after the Fatui officers who had accompanied him for dinner returned to their own tents did Bai Luo quietly put on his fur cloak and disappear into the night.
The Anemo Archon's blessing, combined with Shadow Step—which made him seem to slip into another dimension after turning invisible—allowed him to move through the increasingly frigid mountain with far greater ease than ordinary people.
The rumbling continued.
The Fatui stationed nearby already seemed accustomed to the sound; upon hearing it, they couldn't even be bothered to look up.
Only Bai Luo trudged alone toward the source of the noise, one deep step and one shallow step through the snow.
Following the narrow mountain path, he drew closer and closer to the origin of the sound.
Along the way, there were naturally Hilichurls and other creatures, but Bai Luo avoided them all.
After passing broken stone stairways buried beneath snow and wind, and traversing the ruins of an ancient kingdom, the view before him suddenly opened up.
Standing at the edge of a cliff, the entire scene below came into sight.
Within the raging blizzard, several massive pillar-like structures stretched across the valley. Covered in ice and snow, they resembled the ribs of some gigantic creature.
No, or rather, they truly were the ribs of some creature.
And they belonged to the poisonous dragon Durin.
Using the effect of One-Winged Angel, Bai Luo leapt downward and landed atop one of the colossal bones.
Completely encased in ice and snow, the skeleton no longer retained the texture of bone; it looked more like stone.
Directly beneath the remains were Fatui tents, wagons, and defensive barricades.
But no one stayed here at night.
Although Durin was dead, its influence on the surrounding area remained. Staying here for too long could have dangerous effects.
After all, its poisonous blood had tormented Dvalin for centuries—proof enough of its terrifying power.
This was all something Bai Luo had learned from documents while in the camp.
Thump—
The booming sound rang out once more, this time far clearer than before.
"This is... the sound of a heartbeat?"
