Chapter 24 - 24. Anna

I stood there staring at Rafael, watching him gather himself like he already knew this moment was ending before I did. He wasn't rushing, wasn't asking questions, just moving with that quiet patience of his that always made me feel like I was the one falling apart while he stayed steady. I wanted to stop him. I wanted to reach out, grab his hand, and tell him to stay a little longer, maybe not even for a reason, just because the silence between us suddenly felt too loud for me to handle alone. My heart kept repeating it like a stubborn song I couldn't switch off: I want you to stay with me, I want you to stay with me, I want you to stay with me. But my mouth refused to turn it into words. It stayed locked inside me, heavy and warm and useless, like something I wasn't brave enough to release into the air. I hated how easily he could make me feel this way, like I was always standing at the edge of something I didn't fully understand but still kept leaning toward. He adjusted his jacket, glanced once toward me, and for a moment I thought he might say something too, something that would give me permission to break first, but he just turned slightly toward the door like he had already accepted what I couldn't say. I followed him without thinking, my feet moving before my mind could argue, because even if I couldn't stop him, I still didn't want to lose ‌sight of him too quickly. The house felt emptier with every step we took closer to the exit, like the walls themselves were realizing something was ending. When he reached the door, he paused just enough for me to feel it, just enough for me to think maybe this is the moment I finally speak, but all I did was stand there behind him, silent, trapped inside my hesitation. He stepped outside into the night, and I followed him to the doorway, watching as he pulled his bike into view, the metal catching faint light from the street like a brief goodbye I wasn't prepared for. He didn't look back immediately, and that somehow made it worse, like I was already becoming something he was leaving behind. I should have called his name. I should have done anything other than stand still and pretend my heart wasn't breaking in a way I couldn't explain. But I didn't. I just stayed there, my fingers dabbing the edge of the doorframe, my head leaning against it as if the wood could hold me together in his absence. The night air hit my face, cold and sharp, and I watched him get on his bike, the sound of the engine breaking the quiet between us. For a second, everything slowed down, like the world was waiting for me to change my mind, but I still didn't move. Then he rode off, disappearing into the dark street, his figure getting smaller until there was nothing left to follow. Only the sound remained for a moment, fading like it had never really been there. And then even that was gone. I stayed in the doorway longer than I should have, my chest tightening in a way that made it hard to breathe properly, like my body had forgotten how to function without him in front of me. I wanted to cry out his name, to call him back, to undo the silence I had chosen, but the words never came. Instead, I just stood there, head resting against the door, staring into the emptiness he left behind, still unable to bring my heart back to rest.

Still lost in thoughts of Rafael, I kept staring into the empty street where his bike had disappeared only minutes ago, almost like some part of me expected him to come back. The night had grown quieter now, the kind of silence that makes every little thing feel louder than it really is. I wrapped my arms around myself and turned slightly, ready to go back inside finally, when something caught my attention across the street. A black car sat parked beneath the dim streetlight; the engine off, but the headlights faintly glowing for a second before dying completely. My eyes narrowed a little, trying to recognize it, and then my stomach tightened almost immediately. Elliot. I couldn't believe he had driven all the way here. For a moment, I genuinely thought maybe I was imagining things because there was no reason for him to still be there after everything that had happened tonight. But the more I stared at the car, the more real it became. He was inside. Sitting there. Waiting. I frowned slightly, confusion mixing with something warmer and far more dangerous inside my chest. Why wasn't he coming out? Was he waiting for someone? Waiting for me? Or was he sitting there trying to convince himself to leave? Somehow that thought affected me more than it should have. I leaned against the doorway again, staring toward the car while memories I had tried to bury earlier came rushing back into my head without permission. The room upstairs at the party. Him standing shirtless near the window. The way I forgot every reason I had for going there the closer I got to him. I could still remember how his chest felt beneath my fingertips when I touched him absentmindedly, like my body had betrayed me before my mind even understood what was happening. And then that kiss. Quick. Dangerous. Enough to destroy my senses completely for a moment. I still hated the fact that I ran afterward like some scared little girl who couldn't control herself around a guy. But what scared me more was how badly I wanted to stay. Elliot had this effect on me, that I couldn't explain no matter how hard I tried. Every time he got close, it was like my thoughts stopped belonging to me. And I despised that. I despised how aware he made me of my body, my breathing, my weakness. My mind drifted again to his message earlier, the one that interrupted me and Rafael before our lips could meet. The timing of it still felt unreal, almost cruel. Then Rafael's words before leaving replayed themselves in my head too. "You better call your man, Elliot… or I'll take it as you gave yourself to me." I swallowed hard at the memory, my cheeks warming instantly despite the cold air outside. Everything suddenly felt tangled together—Rafael's softness, Elliot's intensity, my confusion sitting painfully between both of them. I stared back toward Elliot's car again, and this time I noticed movement inside, just barely visible through the dark windshield. He was still there. Still waiting. Something about that realization made my heartbeat pick up. Maybe we really did need to talk. Maybe avoiding this would only make things worse. Or maybe I simply wanted to see him again even after promising myself I shouldn't. I exhaled slowly and pulled my phone from my pocket before I could change my mind. My fingers hovered over the screen for a second while my heart argued with itself. Then finally, I typed: Will you keep sitting in that car of yours or what? I stared at the message for two whole seconds before pressing send. The moment it delivered, regret and anticipation hit me at the same time. I didn't know if it was a good idea. Actually, deep down, I knew it probably wasn't. But there was no other way anymore.

I barely had enough time to put my phone down before headlights flashed shortly outside, cutting through the darkness for a brief second before disappearing again. My heart started beating so hard it almost hurt. I immediately walked back inside the house and sat down near the living room table, trying to calm myself even though I already knew it was useless. Every sound suddenly felt sharper—the ticking clock on the wall, the faint humming of the refrigerator somewhere deeper in the house, even my own breathing. I kept staring toward the doorway, my fingers gripping the edge of the table tightly, wondering what exactly I had just invited into this house. Into myself. Then came the knock. Soft. Almost careful. I stood up immediately, like my body had been waiting for it before my mind could decide anything. The moment I opened the door and saw Elliot standing there beneath the dim porch light, something inside me shifted again. He looked tired, messy, beautiful in the worst possible way, his dark coat hanging loosely over his shoulders while his eyes searched mine like he had been thinking about me the entire drive here. For a second neither of us spoke. The air between us already felt too heavy for words. And suddenly I panicked. Not because I wanted him gone, but because I wanted him there too much. So instead of speaking, instead of asking him why he came or what he wanted from me, I just turned around and walked upstairs without saying a single word. I heard the door shut behind me. Then the quiet click of the lock. And after that, his footsteps following mine through the house. Slow. Certain. Like he already understood me without needing explanations. I should have stopped. I should have turned around and told him this was a mistake before things went too far. But my body kept moving on its own, almost like my thoughts had lost control over it completely. By the time I reached the kitchen upstairs, my chest was rising too fast to keep up with my breathing. I leaned both hands against the counter, trying to steady myself, staring down at the cold marble surface while my pulse thundered in my ears. Then I felt him behind me. Close enough for warmth to spread instantly through my back. I turned slightly, and the look in his eyes destroyed whatever little self-control I had left. There was no teasing there tonight. No games. Just hunger mixed with something deeper neither of us wanted to name. Elliot stepped closer until he stood between my thighs where I leaned against the counter, his hands gripping gently at my waist like he was afraid I might disappear if he let go. And then he kissed me. Hard. Desperate. Like he had been holding himself back for far too long. The feeling hit me so suddenly I almost lost balance completely. My fingers tangled immediately into his curls while his lips moved against mine with a kind of urgency that made my entire body burn. I could barely breathe properly. My mind turned foggy, thoughts dissolving one after another until there was nothing left except him. His scent. His warmth. The rough sound of his breathing mixing with mine in the quiet kitchen. He kissed me like someone starved, like I was something he had wanted for too long and finally couldn't resist anymore. And the worst part was how naturally I kissed him back. My body melted against his before I could stop it, my hands pulling slightly at his hair while his fingers tightened around my waist. Heat spread through me so fast it almost felt painful, like fire crawling beneath my skin. Every place he touched burned. Every second made it harder to remember why this was wrong. His lips moved against mine again and again, slower this time but somehow even more dangerous, like he was learning the taste of me instead of simply stealing it. And standing there in the middle of my aunt's quiet kitchen, with the whole world asleep outside, I realized I was losing myself inside him far more easily than I ever had with anyone else.
