Chapter 9 - Behind the Glass Walls

Steel Global Holdings...

The sixty-eighth floor overlooked the entire city of Rosewood.

Inside the executive boardroom, twelve directors sat in silence.

No one dared look directly at Aaron Steel.

He stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands in his pockets.

"The Westbridge project has fallen behind schedule."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The project director swallowed nervously.

"We encountered a few unexpected problems, sir."

Aaron slowly turned around.

"Problems..."

He walked toward the long conference table.

"Or excuses?"

The room fell silent.

No one answered.

Aaron picked up the report and placed it back on the table.

"I didn't build Steel Global by accepting excuses."

His sharp eyes swept across everyone.

"I built it because people here understood one thing..."

"Results matter."

The meeting ended twenty minutes later.

As the directors hurried out, Aaron remained behind.

His assistant, Ethan Brooks, entered quietly.

"You have lunch with Senator Williams in thirty minutes."

"Cancel it."

"Sir?"

"I have no appetite."

Ethan hesitated.

He had worked for Aaron for nearly ten years.

He knew that when Aaron skipped meals...

Something was troubling him.

But he never asked.

Meanwhile...

Back at Steel Medical Center...

Celina was helping decorate the pediatric ward.

Colorful balloons floated near the ceiling.

Cartoon drawings covered the walls.

Tomorrow was Children's Hope Day, an annual event for young patients.

Volunteers from across the city would visit the hospital.

Lily, the little girl from yesterday, clapped excitedly.

"Miss Celina!"

Celina turned around.

"Yes?"

"I made something for you."

She held out a folded sheet of paper.

Curious, Celina opened it.

It was a crayon drawing.

A little girl.

A smiling woman in a blue uniform.

And a giant flower.

"Is... this me?"

Lily nodded proudly.

"My superhero."

Tears almost filled Celina's eyes.

"No one's ever called me that before."

She carefully hugged Lily.

"I'll treasure this forever."

Standing nearby, Nurse Emily smiled.

"You have a gift."

Celina laughed softly.

"I just like making people smile."

That evening...

Aaron finally returned home.

His penthouse occupied the top floor of one of Rosewood's tallest buildings.

Everything inside was expensive.

Modern furniture.

Rare paintings.

A grand piano that hadn't been touched in years.

Yet...

The apartment felt empty.

He loosened his tie and poured himself a glass of water.

His eyes wandered toward an old framed photograph on the bookshelf.

A smiling little boy...

Standing between his parents.

Aaron picked it up.

His thumb brushed against the face of the woman in the picture.

His mother.

For a brief moment...

Memories rushed back.

A seven-year-old boy standing at the front door.

A suitcase.

A goodbye.

A promise never kept.

Aaron quietly placed the photo face down.

Some memories still hurt too much.

He walked to the window.

Below him...

Thousands of lights filled the city.

Millions of people.

Millions of stories.

Yet somehow...

He had never felt more alone.

Far across Rosewood...

Celina sat beside her father, serving him warm vegetable soup.

They laughed over an old family memory.

Their apartment was small.

The chairs didn't match.

The wallpaper was peeling.

But the room was filled with warmth.

Two lives.

One city.

One surrounded by luxury but haunted by loneliness.

The other surrounded by hardship but held together by love.

Neither knew...

That fate was slowly drawing them toward each other.
