Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Pleasing Him

After all, he detested other women. But Anne Sutton, he could tolerate.

Besides, he could tell Anne Sutton didn't want to leave with Charles Prescott.

She was the one who had come to him!

Charles Prescott glanced at Anne Sutton. He never would have imagined that Nathan Fawcett had taken a liking to her.

'Of all the women out there, he hadn't taken an interest in a single one. Why did it have to be his fiancée?'

Charles Prescott began, "Uncle…"

Nathan Fawcett looked at him. "Hm?"

Charles Prescott had something to say, but after thinking it over, he kept his mouth shut.

Since Nathan Fawcett had already spoken, refusing at this point would mean offending him.

He was somewhat fond of Anne Sutton, but it wasn't worth offending Nathan Fawcett over a woman, especially not now.

He glanced at Anne Sutton and said, "Since Uncle has taken an interest in you, you'd better make something of it. Don't do anything to displease him."

'He never thought Anne Sutton would be so eager to become a widow.'

'In that case, he would grant her wish!'

'He'd just wait and see her come crying later.'

"Don't you worry!" Anne Sutton, however, felt no regret at all. Adding fuel to the fire, she said, "I'll make sure to have his child as soon as possible."

"You..." Charles Prescott was furious. He knew she was doing this on purpose to humiliate him.

He fought back his displeasure, determined not to lose his composure over a woman. "Very well."

With that, he stormed out.

Watching him leave in a huff, Anne Sutton felt she had finally gotten a little bit of payback for the humiliation she'd suffered that afternoon.

She turned back and realized she was still holding onto Nathan Fawcett. He was scowling at her. "Happy now?"

Anne Sutton quickly let go, looked at Nathan Fawcett, and asked, "Why did you come downstairs?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "If I hadn't come down, how could I have bailed you out?"

Anne Sutton touched the tip of her nose. "Thanks."

He had seemed so reluctant before; she really thought he wouldn't help and would just let Charles Prescott drag her away.

Who would have known...

Seeing her thank him, Nathan Fawcett said, "Don't thank me. If you're having second thoughts and want to leave with him, it's not too late. But once you become my woman, getting back together with Charles Prescott will be much more difficult."

Anne Sutton looked at the dying man before her and said, "I don't regret it. However... I have one condition."

"A condition?" Nathan Fawcett's eyes narrowed.

Anne Sutton said, "If I do have your child, I want a portion of your share of the Fawcett family fortune."

"How amusing." Nathan Fawcett sat down on a nearby sofa. "You don't even have a child yet, and you're already scheming for the family fortune?"

The butler, also standing to the side, looked toward Anne Sutton. 'This woman is quite ambitious,' he thought.

Anne Sutton said, "It's not for me, it's for the child. If I do have your child, what's wrong with wanting a share of the family fortune? Charles Prescott isn't even a Fawcett. Would you rather let an outsider have the Fawcett family's assets than give them to your own flesh and blood?"

Anne Sutton only dared to speak so bluntly because she was confident Nathan Fawcett would agree.

After all, Charles Prescott was only set to inherit everything from the Fawcett Family because Nathan Fawcett had no children, leaving the Prescott father-son duo as the sole beneficiaries.

But now, she no longer wanted to be under Charles Prescott's thumb. She didn't want her entire Sutton Family to spend their days fawning over him, only to be met with his disdain.

'After all, no matter how rich a man is, it's not as good as having your own money!'

Nathan Fawcett said, "Alright. If we really have a child, everything will go to them, even if you don't ask."

Anne Sutton looked at him. "So, when will you be feeling a bit better?"

Nathan Fawcett looked back at her. "Why do you ask?"

Anne Sutton replied, "To have the baby, of course."

'If we don't hurry up, what am I supposed to do if you suddenly drop dead?'

Anne Sutton didn't say the rest out loud, but Nathan Fawcett understood her meaning perfectly.

He looked at the woman before him, realizing she seemed even more anxious about it than he was.

The butler, standing nearby, cleared his throat. "In that case, Ms. Sutton will be staying the night. I'll go and make the necessary preparations."

With that, he left the living room to prepare a room for Anne Sutton.

...

The next morning, Anne Sutton was still asleep. She had worked several days straight at the hospital, and today was finally her day off.

However, she was awakened by the sound of Nathan Fawcett coughing.

She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. Nathan Fawcett was already up.

She thought back on everything that happened last night. It had all moved so quickly.

Perhaps because she had been so furious with Charles Prescott yesterday, she hadn't thought things through.

Now, thinking about how she was actually with Nathan Fawcett, about to become his woman and bear his child, she felt a flicker of shyness.

'Once you start down this path, there's no turning back.'

'But that was fine. Once she had the child, she'd have money and would no longer have to live at the mercy of others.'

She sat up and saw that Nathan Fawcett was already dressed.

She spoke first. "Uncle, you're up early?" Nathan Fawcett shot her a cold look. "What did you just call me?"

Anne Sutton was speechless.

'She had just gotten used to calling him that from hearing Charles Prescott do it. It was a slip of the tongue!'

Besides, the man was always a bit intimidating, and she was a little afraid of him.

Hearing his tone, Anne Sutton had no choice but to correct herself. "Mr. Fawcett."

Nathan Fawcett ignored her and walked out the door.

After getting dressed, Anne Sutton came downstairs to find Nathan Fawcett sitting at the dining table, a pile of medicine laid out before him.

He had just finished taking it.

He stared at the food on the table but hadn't touched a bite.

The butler asked, "Sir, your appetite has been poor for the past two days. Please try to eat a little more. It's good for your health."

"I have no appetite," Nathan Fawcett said. "I don't want to eat. Clear it away."

"But you've barely touched anything, sir."

The butler fretted.

Anne Sutton walked over. The butler's gaze shifted to her, and he said politely, "Good morning, Ms. Sutton."

Anne Sutton glanced at the dishes on the table and told the butler, "Go ahead and clear it all away."

"But sir hasn't eaten."

Anne Sutton glanced at the man, who looked gaunt from his illness, and asked, "Where's the kitchen?"

The butler pointed, and Anne Sutton walked off in that direction.

A short while later, she had already cooked a few dishes and had them brought out.

The previous meal was cleared away by the maids, and placed before Nathan Fawcett was a new spread prepared by Anne Sutton.

Three dishes and a soup.

Along with some freshly made congee.

The butler asked, "This is..."

"I made it," Anne Sutton said, looking at Nathan Fawcett. "Would you like to try some, Mr. Fawcett?"

Nathan Fawcett could already smell the inviting aroma.

He looked at the chopsticks Anne Sutton handed him, picked them up dubiously, and put a piece of food into his mouth.

He had always been extremely picky about his food, and because of his medication, he usually couldn't taste much of anything.

But this dish from Anne Sutton was incredibly fragrant...

While it didn't look as refined as the creations of the family's professional chef, the taste was genuinely superb.

After one bite, his chopsticks were already reaching into the bowl again.

Anne Sutton said, "Have some of the soup."

Nathan Fawcett did as she suggested and took a sip.

He ended up eating more in that one sitting than he had the previous night and that morning combined, when the butler had been attending to him.

The butler witnessed this, utterly astonished. "Sir is actually eating!"

Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett, "You take medication every day, Mr. Fawcett, so it's only natural that ordinary food wouldn't appeal to you. I added some medicinal herbs to the recipe."
