The moment she did something he didn't like, he went after her family.
She had never wanted to go down this road. He had forced her hand!
Charles Prescott frowned when he heard this.
He looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Are you serious?"
"What do you think? That I'm joking?" Anne Sutton looked at him, her voice a soft taunt.
Charles Prescott lowered his voice. "Have you seen the state Nathan Fawcett is in? You're going to have a child with him? How can you even stomach it? Won't you have nightmares?"
"Why not?" Anne Sutton said. "What state is he in? I think he's much easier on the eyes than you are."
Seeing that she wasn't the least bit afraid, Charles Prescott suddenly reached out. Anne Sutton was wearing a blouse, and he grabbed the fabric, yanking her collar open. It was then that he saw the marks on her skin.
Charles Prescott's eyes darkened, and a boundless rage surged within them.
'She slept with Nathan Fawcett!'
'She actually...'
A feeling of indignant fury welled up inside him.
It wasn't fear that the child would take everything from him. It was hate...
'She's been stolen from me!'
'Nathan Fawcett slept with her. She's tainted now!'
He'd thought she was just throwing a tantrum, that nothing would actually happen between her and Nathan Fawcett given his poor health. But he never imagined she would take it this far, that she would be so reckless.
'How am I supposed to take her back after this?'
Charles Prescott's grip was so tight that Anne Sutton felt like her blouse was about to rip.
Anne Sutton looked at the man and said, "Charles Prescott, let go of me!"
'Damn it, what is he trying to do in public?'
'Isn't he afraid someone from the Fawcett family will see this?!'
Her shout seemed to snap Charles Prescott back to his senses. "You're insane! You actually slept with him."
"How am I supposed to have a child without sleeping with him?" She looked at him. 'He probably still thinks my marrying Nathan Fawcett is just me throwing a tantrum at him.'
Charles Prescott said, "Anne Sutton, are you fucking trying to piss me off?"
He always liked to project a refined and gentle image in public, but now he was so furious he couldn't stop himself from swearing.
Anne Sutton said, "Pissing you off is just the start. I'm doing this so I don't have to be so subservient to you anymore, so I don't have to walk on eggshells around you. That's why I don't care if I marry Nathan Fawcett, even if you all think he's more like a ghost than a man."
She was giving herself to the most wretched man imaginable, all because she was tired of being at someone else's beck and call, tired of being entangled with a man like Charles Prescott, and tired of him controlling her every move.
Charles Prescott said angrily, "We're on the same side. Throwing a little tantrum is one thing, but this? What was I going to do to you? Look at yourself now. Do you think I'd still want you?"
"Have you gotten something wrong?" Hearing his last sentence, Anne Sutton found it utterly ridiculous. "This isn't about whether you still want me. It's that I don't want you anymore! Charles Prescott, I couldn't care less if you want me."
"..." Charles Prescott stared into her eyes, his dark gaze so intense it felt like it could burn holes right through her face.
He fell silent for a moment, and it took him a while to compose himself.
Charles Prescott forced himself to calm down. "Anne, I know you hate me because you're angry with me. You feel that Sylvia Warren's child is an offense to you, a threat to your position. If you're unhappy, I can make her get rid of the child and kick her out."
"..." Hearing him speak so casually about aborting Sylvia Warren's child, Anne Sutton felt no gratitude, only a chilling horror.
Sylvia Warren might not be a good person, but she had given of herself to be with Charles Prescott, even becoming willing to bear his child.
'Doesn't he have any idea how much an abortion affects a woman's body?'
'What in the world does he think women are?'
Seeing Anne Sutton's silence, Charles Prescott continued, "It's true I've had many women over the years, but none of them could ever threaten your position. You will always be the perfect Mrs. Prescott in my heart."
"Perfect?" Anne Sutton said. "I don't deserve that word. And I will never be your Mrs. Prescott."
Charles Prescott said, "Listen to me. I can go make her get rid of the baby right now."
"And the condition?" He was suddenly saying all this, but Anne Sutton didn't believe for a second that he had truly realized her importance.
Sure enough, in the next second, she heard Charles Prescott say, "I won't say anything about you being with Nathan Fawcett for now. Just promise me you won't get pregnant with his child. When you marry me later, everything will be yours. You and I are family; he's not! Don't ruin our future for an outsider, okay?"
After hearing him out, Anne Sutton started to laugh. "So you're finally scared! Scared that I'll actually have a child who will threaten your position as the heir. But... Mr. Prescott, you and I were never on the same side, and we never will be. Now, your uncle and I are family. We are a legally married couple. You want to make a deal with me? Sorry, I'm not interested."
'Who would give up the chance to be their own master just to keep being his slave and living at his mercy?'
Charles Prescott looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Anne Sutton, don't you regret this."
"Don't worry," Anne Sutton said. "The only thing I'd regret is accepting your offer."
With that, she turned and walked out the door.
Charles Prescott watched her leave, then stormed back into the house in a rage.
He sat down. Seeing him enter, Sylvia Warren walked over and asked, "Honey, did you teach her a lesson?"
Charles Prescott might not care about her, but he would definitely care about her child.
With Anne Sutton acting like this, there was no way Charles Prescott wouldn't be angry.
Charles Prescott glanced at Sylvia Warren. "Are you all right?"
Sylvia Warren said, "I'm fine."
"Are you sure she was the one who pushed you today?" Charles Prescott raised an eyebrow.
'This is the second time!'
'Sylvia Warren has used this kind of trick to provoke Anne Sutton before.'
'Ever since she got pregnant, she's been getting restless.'
Hearing Charles Prescott's question, Sylvia Warren's eyes turned red as she squeezed out a few tears, looking pitiful. "Honey, are you doubting me? How could I ever risk our baby?"
Seeing her pitiful expression, Charles Prescott's voice softened. "Of course not. Why would I ever doubt you? I just gave her a piece of my mind."
"That's good," Sylvia Warren said. "Honey, don't be angry anymore."
...
Anne Sutton went home.
Her mother and Sharon were both there. Seeing Anne Sutton return, her mother asked, "How are things at the Fawcett family's home?"
"They're fine."
"That Nathan Fawcett..."
"I've already registered our marriage." Hearing this, Mrs. Sutton looked at Anne Sutton in surprise.
Sharon had already come closer, staring at Anne Sutton in shock. "You really registered your marriage with him? Then what about my brother-in-law?"
"..." Anne Sutton's eyes turned cold. "Charles Prescott is not your brother-in-law anymore. Don't talk nonsense."
