Chapter 3 - The missing

The ones that have returned are not the same. At first we thought they were just in shock. For 3 days none of them would speak. But one of the researchers saw something none of us could unsee. In the inside of their mouths some form of the planets flora had merged with the flesh of their cheeks leaving the tongue free. None of us would have noticed a thing if not for Lucas trying to ask for water. His mouth was glowing blue, a glow later found to be bioluminecent. We had done a fullbody scan and found something more horrifying his lungs were full of plants. We had attempted to remove a sample of what appeared to be fungus from his mouth but their roots were strong and so deeply buried into the flesh that to remove one whole would have tore a hole in his cheek. I then had everyone scanned and found that only the ones who had gone missing had been infected. Though the look and make of the flora differed into a couple groups. My concern was that the air we were breathing had been contaminated, as the tests before landing had confirmed it safe for humans, the only way to get answers would be to send a squad into the wild. I am very reluctant to do so as the only people to do so have been the infected. We watch for further developments and are going into a lockdown.

Something...

Something has happened to the others. Though we have been on lockdown since the "plant incident", the infected have been put into quarantine. I don't even know how it happened they were given full physicals as soon as they returned and they were fine. Then suddenly Lucas's mouth is glowing and people have plants growing out of their mouths. Sure the plants don't get in the way of breathing or eating, we tested that immediately, but I have no idea what we are going to do. I am no botanist but fungus aren't supposed to have roots as strong as an oaks and they most definitely shouldn't be starting symbiosis with animals. Yes somehow the infected can feel what the plants feel.

God, The Infected.

These are my crew, my friends, my family! They shouldn't have to be reduced to a name for something like zombies. There must be a way to help them and I'm not going to stop until we have figured this out.
