Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 : Ella...

"Well, well, someone is looking handsome."

The queen approached her son, Prince Adam, and adjusted his collar, a smile lighting up her face. "You look wonderful, darling."

At twenty-four, Prince Adam Burchard had matured into a striking man. His dark hair, kept short and slightly tousled, framed a face that seemed effortlessly captivating. His deep brown hooded eyes could make any woman's knees weak, and his tall, athletic frame exuded authority. Even his voice, a deep, smooth timbre, was enough to unsettle hearts. Adam was, quite simply, the epitome of a prince.

"Thank you, Mother," he said, adjusting his sleeves. "It's my first solo royal appearance, and I want to make a good impression."

The royal knighting ceremony was moments away, and he would be appearing alongside the crowned prince of Meria, Nathaniel Aldos. Adam's excitement was palpable, this was the first time he'd appear publicly without his father's supervision. Today, he felt closer than ever to the throne.

"Lady Julia will be arriving soon," the queen added, a gentle warning in her tone. "I asked her to accompany you to the ceremony."

Adam's face fell, his earlier excitement draining away. "Mother… I don't want her there."

The queen's eyebrows knitted. "Come now, Adam. Give the girl a chance. She's been at your side for years. This is the least you can do."

Adam groaned inwardly. Julia had been hovering around him for five years, and while once she had been a charming companion, now she felt more like a shadow he couldn't shake. His heart, however, belonged to another, a girl with red hair and blue eyes, from Meria. And he would not let anything, or anyone, stand in the way.

Meanwhile, a day before the ceremony, Prince Nathan had traveled ahead with Lady Ella to Gavaria. The Morrells planned to follow later, waiting for Alexander and Jonathan to arrive so they could travel together.

Ella sat by a large window in her room, watching the sunset cast golden light over the foreign kingdom. The city spread below her, massive walls protecting a palace at its center, surrounded by houses laid out in perfect circles. Fields of wheat and barley stretched into the distance, painting a picture of breathtaking prosperity.

She barely noticed Nathan approaching from behind until his arms wrapped around her waist, his warm breath brushing her ear.

"It's getting cold, Ella. We should close the windows… and get you into something warmer."

Her face flushed as she turned to meet his gaze, honey-brown eyes sparkling with mischief. "Your parents have arrived," he added gently. "They're staying in a cottage across the palace grounds."

Ella swallowed, suddenly aware of how close they were. "W-where will I… sleep?" she asked softly.

Nathan stepped closer, his chest almost touching hers, a teasing smirk on his lips. "Here, with me," he whispered, sending shivers down her spine.

Ella averted her eyes. She cared for Nathan but didn't love him, yet her body had a mind of its own. The warmth of his embrace, the scent that clung to him, the familiarity of his touch, it was overwhelming. Somehow, without thinking, she nodded.

Nathan's eyes widened in delight. Five years he had waited for this moment, and now he could finally taste the reward. Gently, he wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her closer. His palm pressed against her soft back as his other hand cupped her face.

"Ella…" His voice was low, husky, trembling with emotion.

She could barely breathe, caught in the magnetic pull of him. "Can I…" he asked, his lips brushing hers lightly. "…kiss you?"

Her heart pounded, and without a conscious choice, her lips parted in consent. Nathan's hands tightened slightly on her waist, drawing her flush against him. The kiss deepened, urgent and searching, tongues brushing in tentative exploration. Ella's fingers traced the curve of his biceps, anchoring herself as the world narrowed to the two of them.

Finally, Nathan broke away, resting his forehead against hers, breathing ragged. A satisfied smirk spread across his handsome face. "Ella…"

Her blue eyes looked up at him, wide and questioning, and he chuckled softly. Innocent and unpracticed as she was, her hesitancy only fueled his desire.

"Let's get to bed," Nathan murmured, his voice rough, commanding, yet tender. "Tonight, it's just us."

Ella's body betrayed her once again, trembling in anticipation, as Nathan held her close, the golden sunset spilling over them, casting long shadows of two hearts entwined in a moment that neither could forget.
