"You're a strong boy, Jonathan. Try to help people."
Listening to the dying old man's words, a strange weight settles in my chest as I watch his bandaged form shuddering in pain with every word that escapes. I frown. Even at the very end of the old man's life, he's still trying to look out for other people instead of himself.
If only he had been more selfish, he wouldn't be in this state…
If only he hadn't let his bleeding heart make him take in a strange baby who very clearly wasn't human. If only the old man had been selfish enough to just hand me over to the government. If only the old man hadn't tried to stop my rampage…
No, it isn't fair to blame the old man for having a kind heart. If it wasn't for his kindness, I wouldn't be alive, let alone the man I am now, so I can't begin cursing the old man out. It's my fault that he's like this, so I've just got to man up and deal with it.
"I will, Gramps." Reaching downwards to the old man's bandaged form, which still lies in his bed, I take his hand into my own. I might as well fulfil the old man's wishes, it's the least I could do after everything.
And it's not like his wish is out of the realm of possibility. Trying to help people is far different from spending every moment helping people, so in the end, all I've got to do is lend a helping hand to people in danger when I see it.
It's a nice idea, I'm not surprised the old man thought of it, but it doesn't exactly sing to me. I'm not a good person. I'm violent, hateful, and prone to ignoring people in need when it suits me, but it's an easy enough change.
"Jon…" Tightening his grip on my hand, he smiles lightly at me. "I was going to give you this in a few days, but… seeing as I won't even get to see tomorrow, I thought I'd give it to you now." Reaching over to his bedside table with his trembling hand, he grabs an envelope before holding it out to me.
Taking it from his hand without saying a word, I opened up the envelope carefully before removing the piece of paper inside and reading it. Pausing for a moment as I get halfway through it, my eyes move from the paper to the old man.
"What is this?"
Chuckling slightly, the old man shakes his head lightly. "It's exactly what it says on the paper. I always wanted you to get a proper education, but thanks to your… unique circumstances, we had to make do with what I could teach you. But, thanks to an old friend of mine, I was able to enrol you into a high school a good bit away from here."
Going to speak, I'm stopped in my tracks as the old man gives me a certain look. It wasn't an angry look, honestly, I've never seen the man get angry before, but it's a look that's always been able to stop me in my tracks, even when I was a boy. The gaze had something unique to it that I just couldn't go against.
"I know, I know. You don't want to go to school, do you?" Nodding my head, he lets out a hearty chuckle. "Yeah, I thought as much, but…" Staring at me with something I could only describe as parental love, he gives me a small smile. "I just can't bear the idea of you not getting out there into the world."
"I've done you a great disservice by keeping you out here in the woods with me and only letting you see people when we went to town to get food. A growing boy needs social interaction to grow and become a good person, but I wasn't able to give you that, so please, as a favour to a foolish old man looking out for his beloved grandson, take this."
Turning my gaze back towards the paper, I sigh before bringing up the last and biggest issue I have, "I'm seventeen, Gramps. I doubt I'll be able to keep up with what little schooling I've had."
Nodding his head understandingly, he pointed at the envelope in my hand. "I've already thought of that. If you look inside the envelope, there's another note." Watching as his face crinkles slightly, his wrinkles turning upwards in amusement, I frown slightly.
A second note?
Reaching back into the envelope, I find the second note rather easily… though it does make me scowl slightly as I realise he folded the paper one extra time to make sure I wouldn't have pulled it out with the first one.
Damn old man always messing with me… I think I'm going to miss it when he's gone.
Unfolding this piece of paper before reading it over, I give the old man an unimpressed look, which he returns with a joyous grin. "You can't be serious." Looking at the paper, which is apparently the old man's will, I raise an eyebrow. "How do you even have that much money?!"
Bursting out into a hearty laugh, which after a few moments causes him to cough in pain thanks to his broken ribs, he stops and gives me a lop-sided grin. "There are plenty of things I didn't tell you about Jon, and one of them is that I've been sitting on a rather nice nest egg."
Nest egg? Nest egg?! A nest egg is usually something you can fall back on, but this? This is enough for me to go through the rest of my life without ever working. "If you're this rich, Gramps… then why do we live in a little shack in the woods?"
Now it's the old man's turn to look confused as he tilts his head to the side slightly. "I like the wilderness." Saying those words as if they made perfect sense, I stare at the old man for a good long moment before nodding my head.
Yeah, that adds up.
Maybe it's because Gramps raised me, or maybe it's just something deep inside of me, but I think I would have done the same in his shoes. Living out in the woods feels nice, which is another reason why I don't want to go to the city, but…
"Fine."
Grunting out my agreement before crossing my arms in annoyance, the old man just gives me a wide smile while nodding his head. "Good. I've already bought a house in the city for you to live in while at school, and I've set you up with a tutor so you can catch up with your peers."
Humming along while he speaks, I don't try to interject as he continues, "I've had the same old friend who got you enrolled to set you up with some legal documents so you can actually be a legal citizen. I hope I don't have to remind you to hide your tail while out, do I?"
Scoffing, I shake my head. "Of course not, Gramps. I'm seventeen, not seven. I know I can't let people know that I'm not human." It's a pain in the ass to hide my tail, but it's better than gaining the attention of the wrong people… even if I could just kick their asses if they tried something.
Chuckling while giving me a look that told me he knew exactly what I was thinking, right now, the old man just shakes his head fondly in disbelief. "Ah, the vigour of youth. Sometimes, with how similar you are to me at your age, I can't help but wonder if you really are my grandson."
He acted like me when he was my age? Man, looking at the kind eyes of the old timer, I can't help but shake my head in disbelief. Imagining the old man acting like a delinquent was as amusing as it was unbelievable.
"Ah, all of this talking has really taken it out of me." Watching as Gramps lays his head on his pillow, I just nod my head. It's surprising that he was able to talk so clearly and for so long with those injuries. "Goodnight, Jon."
"Goodnight, Gramps." Staring at the old timer, something begins burning in my chest. Grief? Sadness? Regret? I don't really know, but I just shake my head before walking out of the room after I turn the lights in his room off.
Walking into the cosy living room, the sound of wood crackling and popping in the fireplace, I take a seat on the couch before tossing the two notes from Gramps onto the table. Even though Gramps went to bed, it's far from nighttime, so what should I do until I go to bed?
Shrugging, I just lay down on the couch before covering my eyes with my arm. I'll figure it out later. For now, I'll just relax for a little bit.

…Damn.
After having relaxed in the living room for a few hours, with night-time finally having come, I went to check on Gramps before going to bed and, well… He's dead.
Looking at the old man's now lifeless form, his injuries clearly having finally finished him off, I bite the inside of my cheek. It's not fair… but I have no one to blame but myself for his death…
Reaching down to his body, the still-warm body telling me that he must have died within the hour, I scoop up his smaller form before I begin making my way out of the cabin and into our 'garden', which is simply just the woods.
Letting the cold night-time wind brush against my body, I grunt. I've always enjoyed the feeling of the night's breeze on my skin, but tonight it was little comfort to me as I used the moon's light to guide me through the foliage.
The moon…
Looking up towards the celestial body, I begin cursing both it and myself. If only I had been more careful last night. I forgot that it was a full moon when I went star gazing, a favourite pastime of mine, and because of it I…
I honestly can't remember what I did, but I do know that I transformed into a gigantic ape, something Grandpa told me would happen when I looked at a full moon, and because of that, I was about to go and attack the nearby town before Grandpa stopped me by dragging me into a fight with him.
Grandpa, for being a frail old man, was freakishly strong. Strong enough that, in my normal form, I hadn't once beaten him in a spar. But, no matter how strong he was, it seems my full moon form was strong enough to leave him near death by the end of it all.
Pursing my lips as I remember what Grandpa told me about the fight, I turn my gaze away from the moon while cursing both of us at the same time. I killed my grandfather because of my recklessness. I'll never look at a full moon again for as long as I live.
Making that silent promise to myself as I arrive at my intended destination, my frown turns to a light smile as I begin looking around the forest clearing, which Grandpa and I used to play in all the time.
Looking at the makeshift playground that the old timer made with whatever he could find, my eyes naturally go over to the swing set he had built. We used to sit on the swing set for hours talking about… anything really, and now I'd never get to do that again.
Putting the old man's body down onto the ground as softly as I can, I move towards a nearby tree, which has a shovel lying against it. Picking the shovel up before spinning it in my hand, I nod my head before walking towards the biggest tree in the clearing and digging a grave.
It doesn't take long for me to dig up a deep enough grave, thanks to both my inhuman strength and stamina, so I climb out of the hole before putting the shovel to the side as I go and pick up the old man's corpse and carefully put it in the grave.
If it were anyone else, assuming I cared enough to actually take care of their corpse, I would have either burned their corpse or buried it in a coffin, but I knew the old man well enough to know that he wouldn't have wanted either of those options for his corpse.
He was a man of the earth and, as such, wanted to return to the earth once he died. Burning his body would have taken away that option for him, and putting him in a coffin would have delayed it. Heh, I imagine that if the old timer were still alive, he'd be saying something about how even the maggots needed a good meal every now and again.
Chuckling to myself before picking up the shovel again and burying his body, I pat down the dirt to make sure it's nice and compact. Looking at the grave, I tilt my head to the side in confusion before I bring a fist to my open palm.
The grave is missing a headstone! Wandering away, I spent a while looking for a nicely sized stone that'd work as a nice headstone. Finding one that should work, I take it back to the grave and begin working on making it into a serviceable headstone.
Holding my hand out flat, all five fingers pressed together, I call upon the energy that rests within my being. The energy, which Grandpa decided to call Chi, covers my body as bright blue light begins radiating from me.
Focusing the energy into my hand, I force it into the shape of a blade, which I use to chisel away at the stone and make it into a more proper shape. Holding the headstone out in front of me, I nod to myself. It seems to be symmetrical enough.
Moving over to his grave and making a hole at the head of it for the stone, I nestle the stone into the hole before using the dirt to make sure it won't be moving anytime soon. Looking at the stone, I smile. I just need one more thing…
Focusing the energy once again, this time onto just my pointer finger to make a thin Chi blade, I begin carving into the stone in Kanji, the old man having taught it to me since he's Japanese.
'Here lies Oda Sasaki, beloved grandfather and teacher.'
It's not much, but that feels right. Never one for grand displays or anything of that sort. A nice, simple grave fit for a nice, simple man.
Standing up from my crouching position, I give the grave one last glance before walking away. "It was nice knowing you, old man! Thanks for everything… even when I was an ungrateful little shit, you still took care of me!"
Saying those words a little louder than I needed to, I walked back to the house. Tomorrow morning I'll begin packing, and in the afternoon I'll begin making my way to the city. The paper says I won't need to be there till next week when the school year starts up, but seeing as Gramps has set me up a home, I might as well move in early. It'll give me time to familiarise myself with my surroundings.
Thinking about what I'll do tomorrow, I close my eyes before shaking my head and going to my bedroom. Lying down on my bed, I close my eyes and let myself be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the crickets outside.

Walking out of the house with a bag full of my stuff, which isn't much, seeing as most of my worldly possessions are clothes, a few trinkets and pictures of Gramps and me, I begin walking away until something catches my eye.
Looking at the rickety old shed that rests next to our home, I halt while giving it a long, meaningful look.
Gramps always said I wasn't allowed in there until I was eighteen, but… he isn't here, is he? It's probably a little disrespectful to instantly do something he forbade me to do once he dies, but I doubt I'll be returning here for a good long while.
With both school and trying to understand the world, it could be years before I return, and my curiosity is nagging at me. Going over to the shed, I break the chain holding the door closed before walking in.
Attempting to look around the room, I frown slightly. It's too dark to see, and there's no light switch, but luckily, I've got a way around this. Covering my body with Chi, I use the blue light to help me look around the room.
The room, unlike what you'd expect from a shed, is almost completely empty other than something in the corner covered in a tarp. Pulling the tarp off the mystery object, I take a deep breath as I catch sight of what the old man was hiding.
Staring at the large ball with a red circular glass panel in the middle of it, I raise an eyebrow. Looking closer at the glass, I catch sight of a seat inside the glass. Is this some sort of chair? No, it can't be, but what else could it be?
Thinking about it for a while, my palm pressed against my forehead as I thought. I blink in surprise as a thought dawns on me.
I-is this the spaceship I came to Earth on?
Looking back at the seat for a long moment, I nod to myself. That makes sense, but then why would Gramps hide this from me? He already told me that I was an alien, seeing as I had a tail and turned into a monster upon seeing a full moon, he kind of had to, so why hide it?
Biting my knuckle in annoyance as I try to figure out why I just let out an annoyed grunt. I'll figure it out later. The old man wouldn't have kept it secret for no reason, so there has to be more to this than meets the eye.
Running my fingers along the grooves in the orb that surrounds the glass, which I assume is the door, I begin thinking about how I open it up. Should I just rip the door off, or-?
CLICK
Pulling my hand back, I watch the door as it slowly opens up. Seems like I must have touched the opening mechanism or something.
Looking inside the pod, I tilt my head to the side. Other than the chair, which seems to have no straps to hold you in place, there's a strange object on the armrest which I reach out and grab.
The alien object (Is that the correct term, seeing as this object was probably made by my race?) is strangely reminiscent of one half of a headset, seemingly made to cover only one ear, while a semi-transparent green monocle is connected to it, which I assume is meant to be put over your eye.
Holding up the object and feeling around the part that's clearly meant to go on your ear, I find three buttons resting on top of it. Feeling along the three buttons for a moment, I decided to put it on. What's the worst that could happen?
Putting on my left ear, the strange device somehow sticks there even as I take my hand off of it and begin moving around. I look through the green monocle with slight interest. It's rather weird seeing the world with a slight green tint to it.
Running my pointer finger along the first button, I press on it, which causes the monocle to light up slightly, not enough to hurt my eye, but enough for me to notice. Pressing it again, the light dims and returns to the green from before.
So that's the on and off switch, good to know.
Pressing the button again, turning the device back on, I step outside as I press the next button, which brings up a bunch of strange info onto the monocle that I can't read. I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised that my species has its own language… Maybe I should try to learn it? Though how am I meant to go about doing that….
Pushing that thought aside, as a strange beeping sound begins playing from the device, my eyes widen as the monocle begins to outline… a nearby squirrel. Watching as the text begins changing, some new text appearing in the top right corner, I tilt my head to the side while crossing my arms.
A threat detection system of some sort? I suppose that makes sense. If I were sent away from my planet, then that means our species must have been in some sort of trouble, so maybe we were at war with someone?
Ignoring the thought, I press the second button again, which turns the text off and stops outlining the squirrel for me. That leaves only one button left.
Pressing the third and final button, my eyes widen further to the size of saucers as a video begins playing over the monocle. Watching as what looks like an older, angrier version of me stands next to a rather beautiful-looking spiky-haired woman.
"Kumber…" The woman, who stares at the screen with a 'loving' gaze, as in loving compared to the apathetic look on the man's face, says the word with the smallest bit of affection in her tone. I wonder what Kumber means.
"Silence." Blinking in surprise as the man spoke in perfect English (did this thing have a translator or something?), he tells the woman, who I assume is my mother, to be quiet, which she does after giving the man, who I assume is my father, a heated glare.
"Kumber, my son and one of the last few remaining members of the Saiyan race," so Kumber is my original name? Honesty, I think I prefer the name Gramps gave me. But I suppose it is nice to finally know both my real name and the name of my race.
"It is your duty, not only as a warrior but as one of the last few remaining Saiyans, to conquer the planet we have sent you to and to reproduce with as many women as you can so the Saiyan race may continue on even if it must be in a diminished form."
I'm not starting to see why Gramps hid this from me… I wonder, did he watch this? I imagine so, but to know that I was sent here to conquer the planet and make a super harem to continue my race and still take me in… why'd that damn old man have to be such a nice person?
Sending the old man a half-hearted curse, the old timer, no doubt laughing at my annoyance from wherever his soul went, I continued watching the video.
"The planet we sent you to, Arlia, is a weak planet full of a bug-like alien species. This planet will make an excellent starting point for your conquest, but I'll warn you that you might want to conquer the nearby planet of Gruy after you've conquered Arlia, since the women of Arlia aren't exactly fit for continuing the great Saiyan race!"
"Ahem!" My mother, clearly annoyed at my father's monologuing, coughs into her fist while giving the angry-looking man an annoyed stare, which causes him to raise an eyebrow before his eyes widen by the smallest amount as if he just realised something important.
"Ah, yes…" Pausing for a long moment while staring at my mother, he turns back to the 'camera', which I assume might be this device, before continuing, "Either way, it doesn't matter. Survive, make the Saiyan race proud and most importantly, don't fail."
Staring at the camera with a gaze that I could only describe as fanatical, before turning away and walking out of line of sight, my mother walks closer to the camera before speaking into it, "Kumber, my baby boy, survive no matter what."
Giving the camera a light smile before reaching out towards the camera, the feed cuts as a rewind symbol appears clearly asking if I want to watch the video again. Pressing the first button, I turn off the device before pulling it off and putting it on top of the pod.
So I'm one of the last few remaining Saiyans? I already assumed so, but it still hurt to know that I might never meet another member of my race… until the other side of me begins pushing that sadness down as I'm reminded that I come from a race of planet conquerors.
A race of planet-conquering warriors that expected me to start a harem to continue my race… Bringing my palm to my forehead, I let out a deep sigh. It all sounds so nonsensical, but this is my life now.
Though it's now like I'm actually going to follow what they told me to do. I feel regret that I never got to truly meet my parents, but thanks to what I've learned, the hurt is far less than what it should be. While they might have saved me from whatever doomed the Saiyan race, they weren't the ones who raised me.
Gramps raised me, and I'm not going to have an ideological flip just because that's my 'purpose'. I'm Jonathan Sasaki, grandson of Oda Sasaki. I'll try my best to carry on his will since that's what I want to do. The Saiyan race can die out for all I care.
… Actually, wait a minute… I mean, every member of the Saiyan race other than me could die, and I wouldn't care. I kind of need to be alive to care or not care about something.
Huffing slightly at my thoughts, I look down at the device in my hand before walking out of the shed with it. Maybe the Saiyan race wasn't good people, but I can at least use some of their technology for good.
Using the broken chain on the floor to once again lock the door, seeing as I intended to leave the space pod in there, I use my Chi to head up the end of the chair to connect them together to make sure no one will break into the shed.
Looking at my handiwork with a small smile on my lips, I nod before walking away and putting the strange device I found into my bag.
Turning back towards the house one last time, the home I was raised in since I was a little boy, I smile sadly as I look away and begin making my way to town. From there, I'll have to catch a ride to Chicago.
This is going to take me a while, isn't it?

Arriving in the forests between Payson and Plainville, closer to Payson than Plainville, I make a motion with my hand to the nearby GDA soldiers who step out of a nearby heavily armoured vehicle.
"Do you believe it to be wise to come out here yourself, sir?" Turning to Donald Ferguson, my closest companion and most reliable worker, I nod my head at his words. It's a fair question, but I can't just leave something like this to anyone else.
"Roughly seventeen years ago, an unidentified object made its way into Earth's orbit before falling into these woods. Back then, I sent out a few teams, but they came back with no info other than that there was a crater in the middle of the woods, which we then covered up."
Staring at me as I speak, Donald raises an eyebrow as I continue talking, "Of course, my first assumption was an alien, it's not the first time we've had visitors from the stars, but seeing as they went into hiding and haven't resurfaced, I had hope it would be okay…"
"Until roughly a month after that, a giant ape monster appeared and began destroying a huge part of the forest." Seemingly now catching on, Donald nods his head as I keep going, "We didn't catch news about it until the next day, and the giant ape somehow disappeared."
"And this morning we caught word that a giant ape began destroying the forest last night." Donald, finishing my story for me, brings his hand to his chin in thought.
"But let me ask you, what was last night?" Being pulled out of his thoughts by my question, Donald looks at me in surprise before pausing and clearly thinking it over.
"It… it was a full moon last night, sir. Do you believe the giant ape might be like a werewolf?" Nodding my head as I get a message through the radio, I begin walking to the coordinates I was given as Donald follows.
"That's what I'm thinking. Last time the giant ape appeared was also a full moon, so my guess is that our extra-terrestrial friend didn't know about their… ability until they got here all that time ago."
Donald, clearly trying to piece everything together, asks the one-million-dollar question, "But then why turn into a giant ape last night? Was he trying to destroy the forest…?" Donald's words trail off as we arrive at our destination.
Looking at the large portion of the forest that had been destroyed, large footprints embedded into the forest floor, both our eyes moved towards the other craters in the clearing that were clearly created by something or someone else.
"My guess? It got pulled into a fight with something else and used the full moon to its advantage." Watching as some soldiers take samples of some old blood that has been splattered against a fallen tree, I motion my head towards it.
"We'll do some labs and see what we can get. Until we get the results back, we'll scour this entire forest for the alien. If they're friendly, I might be able to get them to either become a hero or at least stop living in the forest like a cryptid."
"And if they're not friendly?" Not answering Donald's question, I look out towards the destruction that had been caused. We both know what I'll do if it turns out this alien is hostile…
A/N: A few little things to note here.
1: For this story, I'm going to aim for 5000~ words per chapter.
2: I know that Dragon Ball outscales Invincible massively, but the MC is an incredibly weak Saiyan (Imagine Goku if he never met strong people he could train with).
3: I know Saiyans are meant to just destroy everything around them and the reason Goku is good is because he got brain damage but I do truly believe that, if raised by someone like Grandpa Gohan, even a non brain damaged Saiyan could be turned away from their conquering habits (Just look at how Vegeta slowly changed while on earth even as someone who was raised with Saiyan values).
4: Both Dragon Ball and Invincible have inconsistent scaling, but I'm going to try to keep the power levels consistent.
