Chapter 154: Homecoming
Black Moon Town,
Nazu's POV,
The smell hit you before the sight did.
Char and singed fur, the particular sweetness of burnt beast flesh that clung to the back of your throat whether you breathed through your nose or your mouth. Nazu had grown used to it over the past two days, but it was beginning to feel like an annoyance.
Below the wall, three teams of goblins worked in loose formation across the killing ground outside the gates. Some dragged carcasses into piles with the efficiency of creatures who had done this before. Others moved behind them with the flame throwers — those strange silver lanterns Lovan's people had made — and set the piles alight with short controlled bursts. The fire caught fast on the dry-furred things and the black smoke rose in columns into the dark night sky.
