Chapter 39 - Don’t Let Me Get Used to Losing You

The shift from yesterday didn't disappear.

It lingered.

Shen Yichen noticed it immediately—but differently this time.

Not as a threat.

As a delay he hadn't accounted for.

He stood near Lin Yue, as always.

But his attention wasn't as locked as before.

It kept… testing.

Re-checking.

Lu Han noticed it too.

"You're still not reacting instantly," he said carefully.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"I'm noticing patterns in distance again," he replied.

Lin Yue studied him.

"And what's the pattern now?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen's gaze stayed on her.

"Nothing happens immediately," he said.

Silence.

That sentence was simple—but it contradicted everything he built before.

Lu Han stepped forward slightly.

"So your assumption is breaking down," he said.

Shen Yichen didn't respond right away.

Then quietly:

"It's not broken."

A pause.

"It's… delayed."

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"Delayed fear?"

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

Just observation.

Lu Han exhaled.

"That's still progress," he said.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him.

"I don't trust it yet," he replied.

"But it's inconsistent with my earlier conclusion."

Silence.

That word—*inconsistent*—meant something important.

It meant he was no longer treating his fear as absolute law.

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer again.

Shen Yichen noticed—but again, no immediate tightening.

Just awareness.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You're starting to separate me from your fear response."

Shen Yichen looked at her for a long moment.

"I'm trying to understand why you don't disappear instantly anymore," he said quietly.

Lin Yue's expression softened slightly.

"Because I'm still here."

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"But before, I thought 'not instantly' still meant 'eventually.'"

Silence.

That was the old system collapsing.

Lu Han stepped forward.

"You're generalizing trauma into timing," he said.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

"But timing might not be fixed."

Silence.

That line changed the structure again.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"So you're reconsidering your entire belief about distance?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen paused.

"I'm not discarding it," he said.

"I'm… testing exceptions."

Lu Han exhaled slowly.

"That's how change starts," he said.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"I didn't want change," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I wanted certainty."

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer again.

Shen Yichen noticed—but this time, his reaction didn't come immediately.

A pause passed.

Then another.

No panic.

Just observation again.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You're getting used to uncertainty."

Shen Yichen shook his head once.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm getting used to not reacting immediately to it."

Silence.

And that distinction mattered.

Because for the first time—

his fear wasn't the first voice in the room.

It was just one of them.

Waiting.

Not leading.
