The silence after his words didn't break.
It tightened.
Like the room itself had started adjusting to Shen Yichen's emotional limits.
He stood closer to Lin Yue now than before.
Not aggressive.
Just unavoidable.
Lu Han's expression had shifted—less confrontation, more calculation.
"You're not reacting to reality anymore," he said quietly.
Shen Yichen didn't look at him.
"I am," he replied.
A pause.
"I'm reacting to patterns."
Lin Yue's gaze narrowed slightly.
"What patterns?" she asked softly.
Shen Yichen finally looked at her.
His voice stayed calm.
"Whenever someone gets close to you," he said,
"I feel the same thing."
Silence.
Lin Yue frowned.
"What thing?"
Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.
"Loss."
That word again.
Always the center.
Lu Han stepped forward slightly.
"That's not a pattern," he said.
"That's your fear coloring perception."
Shen Yichen turned toward him slowly.
"And what happens when fear is correct?" he asked quietly.
No answer.
Because that was the dangerous part.
Sometimes fear *was* correct.
Lin Yue exhaled slowly.
"You're assuming closeness equals replacement," she said softly.
Shen Yichen nodded once.
"Yes."
Simple.
Final.
"And I don't want to test if I'm wrong."
Silence.
Lin Yue studied him carefully.
"So you're going to prevent every interaction I have with other people?"
Shen Yichen didn't deny it.
"No."
A pause.
"I'm going to stay close enough that it doesn't matter."
Lu Han let out a short breath.
"That's the same thing in practice."
Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.
"I know," he said quietly.
"And I still prefer it."
Silence settled again.
Lin Yue's voice softened slightly.
"You're turning presence into control without realizing it."
Shen Yichen shook his head once.
"I realize it," he said.
A pause.
"I just don't see a safer option."
Lu Han stepped forward again.
"This isn't safety," he said firmly.
"This is emotional imprisonment."
Shen Yichen's gaze sharpened slightly.
"I'm not imprisoning her," he said.
A pause.
"I'm keeping myself from breaking."
Lin Yue looked at him for a long moment.
"And you think I'm the only thing holding you together," she said softly.
Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
No softness in the word.
No romance.
Just truth.
Lu Han's voice lowered.
"That kind of dependency will destroy both of you."
Shen Yichen finally turned toward him fully.
"And what if separation destroys me first?" he asked quietly.
Silence.
No answer came.
Because none of them could guarantee otherwise.
Shen Yichen turned back to Lin Yue.
Their distance had shrunk again without effort.
Like gravity correcting itself.
His voice softened slightly.
"I don't force people away from you," he said quietly.
A pause.
"I just can't tolerate losing you through them."
Lin Yue studied him carefully.
"You're still treating me like something that can be taken," she said softly.
Shen Yichen didn't deny it.
"Yes."
A pause.
"And I don't think I can survive it twice."
Silence.
And for the first time, Lin Yue saw it clearly—
this wasn't about controlling her life.
It was about controlling the *distance* that might lead to losing her again.
And in his mind, even a little space…
was already the beginning of disappearance.
