— Rei POV —
The change in the air came before the light.
It was subtle at first, a shift in density that broke the consistency of the cave. The stillness I had grown used to no longer held, replaced by something less contained, something that moved without pattern.
I slowed slightly, not stopping, but adjusting.
"…We're close."
"…Yeah, I can feel it too," Rimuru Tempest replied, his presence shifting with something closer to curiosity than caution.
I didn't respond. My focus had already moved ahead.
Something else was there.
Not part of the cave.
The sound reached me next.
Faint.
Irregular.
Different from anything I had encountered so far.
Footsteps.
I stopped.
"…We're not alone."
Rimuru went quiet immediately.
"…Monsters?"
"…No."
The difference was clear.
The movement lacked the instinctive rhythm I had observed in the creatures within the cave. It was controlled, deliberate in a different way.
"…Something else."
I moved toward the edge of the passage, lowering my presence as much as I could while keeping my vision clear. The space ahead opened slightly, enough to reveal movement between the rock formations.
Three figures.
Human.
I remained still, observing.
They moved with caution, but not fear. Light sources in their hands—tools, not natural. Their movements were coordinated, not reactive.
"…They're organized."
Rimuru shifted slightly behind me.
"…Wait… those are humans?"
"Yes."
The answer came without hesitation.
I watched them for a moment longer, analyzing.
Weapons.
Equipment.
Communication between them—audible, structured.
Different from us.
"…Are they dangerous?" Rimuru asked.
"…Unknown."
That was the only accurate answer.
"They don't feel that strong, though," he added.
"…That's not relevant."
Strength alone didn't determine outcome.
Unknown variables mattered more.
I stepped back slightly, moving out of their line of sight.
"…We avoid them."
"…Really?" Rimuru sounded surprised. "Shouldn't we—"
"No."
I cut him off before he could finish.
"…We don't understand them."
There was a brief pause.
"…Yeah… fair."
He didn't argue further.
We stayed where we were, hidden within the uneven terrain, watching as the three humans moved deeper into the cave. Their presence disrupted the environment in a way nothing else had so far—not through strength, but through intent.
They weren't reacting.
They were searching.
"…They came here on purpose," Rimuru said quietly.
"Yes."
That alone made them more dangerous than anything else we had encountered so far.
We waited.
Not long.
Just enough.
When their presence faded into the deeper sections of the cave, I shifted my attention back toward the path ahead.
"…We move."
"…Now?"
"Yes."
There was no reason to stay.
I stepped forward, continuing toward the source of the shifting air. The passage widened gradually, the crystal light fading as something brighter replaced it.
The first contact with it was immediate.
Light.
It broke through the darkness without resistance, forcing my vision to adjust as the enclosed space of the cave gave way to something open.
I stopped.
Not out of hesitation.
Adjustment.
"…So this is outside."
Rimuru moved slightly beside me.
"…Whoa…"
The space beyond stretched further than anything within the cave. The air moved freely, carrying unfamiliar scents and sensations that didn't follow the contained patterns I had adapted to.
Uncontrolled.
Unpredictable.
"…This changes everything."
"…Yeah," Rimuru said, his tone lighter, almost impressed. "It kinda does."
I stepped forward again.
There was no reason to remain at the boundary.
Behind us was something understood.
Ahead—
Wasn't.
And that—
Was the point.
