Chapter 63 - The Awakening of the Shadow (Part - II)

"You were the first one who opened the door."

The words of the First Shadow echoed through Kaalvan.

Vaidehi stood completely still.

Her face had lost all colour.

Tez held her hand tightly.

"Vaidehi."

She did not answer.

Her eyes were fixed on the enormous dark figure above the ancient city.

The First Shadow did not move.

It simply watched her.

Waiting.

As though it had been waiting for this moment for thousands of years.

"Vaidehi," Tez said again.

This time she looked at him.

"I don't remember."

The words came out with difficulty.

"I don't remember opening anything."

The Shadow's voice travelled through the city.

"That is why they erased it."

Vaidehi closed her eyes.

A sharp pain passed through her head.

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

Then she screamed.

"Vaidehi!"

Tez caught her before she fell.

Her body became strangely cold.

Arvind immediately stepped toward them.

"Don't let her look at it!"

Tez turned angrily.

"What is happening to her?"

"Her memory is opening."

"Then help her!"

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because this memory belongs to her alone."

Tez looked at Maitreyi.

The old scholar nodded slowly.

"Arvind is right."

"You mean we just stand here?"

"No."

Maitreyi looked at Vaidehi.

"We protect her while she remembers."

A strange light began forming around Vaidehi.

White.

Then blue.

Then almost silver.

The pendant around her neck rose slightly from her chest.

It was shining without being touched.

The First Shadow remained silent.

And then Vaidehi disappeared.

Not physically.

Her body was still standing in Tez's arms.

But her eyes had gone distant.

She was somewhere else.

Somewhere deep inside her own forgotten past.

---

Vaidehi opened her eyes.

She was standing in a forest.

A very old forest.

Tall trees surrounded her.

Their branches formed a roof above her head.

Sunlight passed through the leaves in thin golden lines.

Birds sang.

A river flowed nearby.

For a moment, Vaidehi forgot the darkness of Kaalvan.

She looked around.

"Where am I?"

Then she heard laughter.

A child's laughter.

She turned.

A little boy was running through the grass.

He was perhaps six years old.

His hair was untidy.

His clothes were simple.

But Vaidehi knew him.

Her heart knew him before her mind did.

"Tez…"

The boy stopped.

He looked at her.

Then smiled.

"Vaidehi!"

She stared.

The child ran toward her.

She wanted to move.

But she could not.

She was not part of the memory.

She was only watching it.

The young Tez stopped beside her.

"You came late."

A little girl appeared behind him.

It was Vaidehi herself.

Perhaps five years old.

She was holding a small wooden toy.

"I wasn't late," the young Vaidehi said.

"You were."

"I was with Ma."

"That's always your excuse."

The little girl laughed.

The older Vaidehi covered her mouth.

She had forgotten this.

She had forgotten him.

She had forgotten this place.

But the memory was real.

Too real.

Young Tez took the wooden toy from her.

"Look what I found."

"What?"

"A secret path."

Young Vaidehi's eyes became wide.

"Where?"

"Come."

They ran toward the trees.

The older Vaidehi followed.

The children stopped beside a large stone covered with strange symbols.

A small circular mark was carved into it.

The same mark as the Guardian Seal.

Young Tez placed his hand on it.

Nothing happened.

Young Vaidehi touched it too.

The stone suddenly glowed.

A soft white light appeared.

The children stepped back.

"What did we do?" the little Vaidehi whispered.

Tez smiled.

"We found magic."

"No."

A woman's voice came from behind them.

Both children turned.

Two women stood beneath the trees.

Tez's mother.

And Vaidehi's mother.

The older Vaidehi felt her heart tighten.

She had seen them before in memories.

But never like this.

Never together.

Tez's mother looked frightened.

Vaidehi's mother was holding a small bundle against her chest.

She walked toward the children.

"Who told you to come here?"

Young Tez pointed at the stone.

"It called us."

The two women exchanged a worried look.

Young Vaidehi asked:

"Why are you afraid?"

Her mother knelt before her.

"Because some doors should remain closed."

Young Tez frowned.

"But it opened."

His mother looked at him.

Then at Vaidehi.

"No," she whispered.

"It did not open."

"Then what happened?"

She looked toward the stone.

"The Heart remembered you."

The older Vaidehi felt a chill.

The memory changed.

The forest disappeared.

She was now inside a temple.

The temple was huge.

Its walls were covered with images of the Heart.

Seven circles surrounded it.

Seven cities.

Seven locks.

At the centre stood two children.

Tez.

Vaidehi.

Their mothers stood behind them.

A group of Guardians surrounded them.

One of the Guardians spoke.

"They are too young."

Another replied:

"That is why they are safe."

"Safe from what?"

The Guardian looked toward the dark chamber beyond the Heart.

"From the Shadow."

Vaidehi felt fear.

The scene changed again.

She saw Vardhan.

He was younger.

Not the cold man she knew.

He looked tired.

Broken.

He stood before Tez's father, Arvind.

"Let me take the boy," Vardhan said.

"No."

"He is already connected to it."

"That is exactly why you cannot have him."

"You think hiding him will save him?"

Arvind stepped forward.

"You don't understand what it wants."

"I understand perfectly."

"No."

Arvind's voice became hard.

"You understand death."

Vardhan went silent.

Arvind continued.

"You lost your brother. You could not accept it. You searched for a way to defeat death."

Vardhan's eyes filled with anger.

"You would have done the same."

"No."

"You say that now."

"I would have mourned him."

Vardhan looked away.

"I did mourn him."

"You tried to bring him back."

Silence.

Then Vardhan said quietly:

"And if I had succeeded?"

Arvind answered:

"He would not have been your brother anymore."

Vardhan looked at him.

"You don't know that."

"I do."

Arvind's eyes moved toward the Heart.

"The Shadow taught you to believe that memory is life."

Vardhan's face changed.

For a moment, fear appeared in his eyes.

Then the memory vanished.

---

Vaidehi was standing beside a river.

She looked younger now.

Perhaps seven years old.

Her mother was sitting beside her.

Young Vaidehi was crying.

"Why can't I remember him?"

Her mother gently touched her face.

"Remember who?"

"The boy."

"What boy?"

"Tez."

Her mother became still.

Young Vaidehi wiped her tears.

"He was my friend."

Her mother smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"Then why can't I remember him?"

"Because sometimes forgetting protects love."

The little girl looked confused.

"How?"

"If you remember him, the Shadow may find you."

"What is the Shadow?"

Her mother looked toward the dark forest.

"Something that should never find you."

"Will Tez forget me?"

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

The little Vaidehi began crying.

"No!"

Her mother hugged her.

"He will forget."

"I don't want him to."

"He must."

"Why?"

"Because one day, you may need to find each other again."

The child looked up.

"How will we find each other if we forget?"

Her mother whispered:

"The Heart will remember for you."

The older Vaidehi felt tears run down her face.

She finally understood.

The line she had heard so many times was not a prophecy.

It had been a promise.

A promise made by two mothers.

A promise made for two children.

The memory shifted again.

This time, Vaidehi saw a dark chamber.

Tez was there.

He was only a baby.

His mother was holding him.

Arvind stood beside her.

Devadatta was there too.

Vaidehi's mother stood near the door.

And behind them—

something moved.

The First Shadow.

Even then.

Even when Tez was a baby.

It was already there.

The women were frightened.

Arvind said:

"It has found him."

Tez's mother held her child tighter.

"No."

"It knows the boy."

"It cannot take him."

"The Seal is inside him."

Vaidehi's mother stepped forward.

"And the second half is inside my daughter."

Everyone became silent.

Tez's mother looked at her.

"Then they must never meet."

The words struck Vaidehi.

Never meet?

But they had met.

Again and again.

Through every part of their journey.

Maybe that was why the Shadow had been able to find them.

Arvind spoke.

"Then the memories must be removed."

Vaidehi's mother closed her eyes.

"If we do this, they may hate us one day."

Tez's mother looked down at her son.

"I would rather have him hate me than lose him."

Then came a sound.

A whisper.

The First Shadow was near.

"He has already seen me."

Everyone froze.

Tez's mother looked toward the darkness.

The Shadow spoke again.

"The child remembers."

Arvind stepped forward.

"Take him away."

Devadatta picked up the baby.

Tez's mother touched his forehead.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"Forgive me."

She kissed him.

Then she whispered:

"If you ever remember this…"

She looked at Vaidehi's mother.

"…find her."

Vaidehi's mother nodded.

The memory began to fade.

But before it disappeared, Vaidehi heard one final sentence.

Her mother's voice.

"The boy is not the key, Vaidehi."

The older Vaidehi froze.

"What?"

The memory stopped.

Everything became silent.

Her mother's voice returned.

"Neither are you."

The darkness around Vaidehi began to move.

Her mother's voice continued.

"You are the lock."

Vaidehi's heart began beating rapidly.

"And Tez?"

Silence.

Then—

"He is the door."

---

Vaidehi opened her eyes.

She screamed.

Tez caught her.

"Vaidehi!"

She looked around wildly.

Kaalvan was still collapsing.

The First Shadow still stood above the city.

But something had changed.

Vaidehi was crying.

Tez held her shoulders.

"What did you see?"

She looked at him.

For several seconds, she could not speak.

Then she whispered:

"We knew each other."

Tez's eyes widened.

"I know."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don't understand."

Her voice broke.

"We knew each other before Suryanagari."

Tez stared at her.

"How?"

"Our mothers."

Tez became still.

"They were together."

"Yes."

"And they erased our memories."

"Yes."

"Because of the Shadow."

Vaidehi nodded.

"But there is more."

Tez waited.

Vaidehi looked at the black mark on her hand.

"My mother said something."

"What?"

"She said…"

Vaidehi struggled to continue.

Then she looked directly into Tez's eyes.

"She said I am the lock."

Tez's face tightened.

"And I am the door."

Before either could say more, a slow clap came from the darkness.

Everyone turned.

Vardhan stepped out from behind a broken pillar.

His clothes were covered with dust.

Blood marked one side of his face.

But he was smiling.

"You finally remember."

Arvind immediately raised his blade.

"Vardhan."

Vardhan ignored him.

His eyes remained on Vaidehi.

"You were always the more dangerous one."

Tez stepped between them.

"Stay away from her."

Vardhan laughed softly.

"You still think I want to hurt her."

"You came here for the Seals."

"No."

Vardhan looked at the two marks.

"I came here because I finally understand what they are."

Arvind's face darkened.

"You understand nothing."

Vardhan turned toward him.

"You lied to everyone."

Then he looked at Tez.

"Your father told you that the Shadow chose you."

He smiled.

"He never told you why."

Tez felt anger rising inside him.

"What are you talking about?"

Vardhan took one slow step forward.

"When you were a child, you did not simply see the First Shadow."

Tez stared at him.

"You spoke to it."

Silence.

"You made a promise."

Tez's breathing stopped.

Vaidehi looked at him.

Vardhan continued.

"And your father erased your memory because he was afraid you would remember what you promised."

Arvind shouted:

"Enough!"

Vardhan smiled.

"Tell him."

Arvind remained silent.

"Tell your son the truth."

Still nothing.

Tez turned toward his father.

"Father?"

Arvind's eyes lowered.

Tez's voice became quiet.

"What did I promise?"

Arvind looked at him.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then the First Shadow moved.

The entire city shook.

A deep crack opened in the ground.

Black light rose from beneath Kaalvan.

The Shadow's voice filled the sky.

"You promised to return to me."

Tez looked upward.

His heart was pounding.

"Why?"

The Shadow answered.

"Because you asked me to save someone."

Tez froze.

"Who?"

The Shadow said nothing.

Instead, the black mark on Tez's hand began glowing.

Then Vaidehi's mark began glowing too.

The two lights connected.

A vision appeared between them.

A little boy.

A little girl.

Their mothers.

A dark chamber.

And a third figure.

A young boy lying beside the Heart.

His face was hidden.

Vardhan's expression suddenly changed.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

"No…"

Tez looked at him.

"You know him."

Vardhan stepped backward.

"No."

"You know who that is."

"I said no."

Arvind looked toward the vision.

His face became pale.

Maitreyi whispered:

"This cannot be."

Tez turned to her.

"What?"

She stared at the hidden child.

"The records said there were only two chosen children."

"Then who is the third?"

Nobody answered.

The vision moved closer.

The hidden child's face slowly became visible.

Tez stared.

He knew that face.

Not because it looked like him.

Not because it belonged to someone he loved.

But because he had seen it in his dreams.

A child with the same eyes.

The same mark.

The same strange calm expression.

The child opened his eyes.

And spoke.

"Tez."

Tez stepped backward.

Vaidehi grabbed his hand.

The child smiled.

"You finally remembered me."

Then the vision shattered.

The force threw everyone to the ground.

Vardhan disappeared into the darkness.

Arvind rushed toward Tez.

But Tez pushed himself up.

"Who was that?"

Arvind looked at him.

His silence was enough.

Tez's voice became stronger.

"Who was that child?"

Arvind finally spoke.

"He was the reason your memories had to be erased."

Tez's heart sank.

"Why?"

Arvind looked toward the dark chamber beneath Kaalvan.

"Because he was the first child the Shadow ever touched."

A terrible silence followed.

Then Arvind added:

"And he was not supposed to survive."

Tez stared at him.

"Then why did he just call my name?"

Arvind had no answer.

Above them, the First Shadow slowly lifted both hands.

The ancient city began to disappear.

Tower after tower turned into black dust.

Temples vanished.

Bridges collapsed.

Thousands of forgotten names faded from the walls.

Kaalvan was dying.

But beneath the city—

something was waking.

Something that had known Tez before he had a name.

And somewhere in the darkness, Vardhan whispered to himself:

"The third child…"

He closed his eyes.

"After all these years…"

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"…he survived."
