Chapter 52 - The First Guardian - The Man Who Was Tez

The temple doors closed behind Tez.

Boom.

The sound rolled through the ancient chamber.

He turned quickly.

The doors had no handles.

No locks.

Nothing that could be moved by human hands.

Outside, he could hear distant shouting.

Steel striking steel.

The Black Eclipse had reached Anantapura.

But Tez barely heard the battle.

His eyes were fixed on the man standing before him.

The man looked exactly like him.

The same eyes.

The same shape of face.

Even the same small scar near the left eyebrow.

Tez stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The man did not answer immediately.

He walked toward the centre of the chamber.

There was an old stone seat behind him.

He sat down slowly.

"You ask the wrong question."

Tez frowned.

"Then tell me the right one."

The man's eyes softened.

"You should ask, why do I look like you?"

Tez's heart beat faster.

"Why?"

"Because the Heart remembers."

"The Heart remembers what?"

"Everything."

The man looked toward the ceiling.

"The victories."

"The mistakes."

"The blood."

"The promises."

"The people who died."

"And the people who survived."

Tez stepped closer.

"Are you saying you are a memory?"

The man smiled.

"Partly."

"Then why can I see you?"

"Because the Heart has allowed you to."

Tez shook his head.

"This makes no sense."

"It will."

The First Guardian

The man stood.

"My name was once Aryan."

Tez repeated the name silently.

"Aryan."

"Yes."

"Who were you?"

The man's expression became serious.

"I was the first person chosen by the Heart."

Tez stared at him.

"The First Guardian."

Aryan nodded.

"But I was not the first person to find the Heart."

"Then who did?"

"A group of seven seekers."

"They found it beneath the mountains."

"They believed they had discovered a source of unlimited knowledge."

"At first, they wanted to use it for the good of humanity."

Tez listened carefully.

"What changed?"

"Power."

Aryan's voice became quiet.

"Power does not always enter through greed."

"Sometimes it enters through fear."

"Fear of losing."

"Fear of death."

"Fear of weakness."

"Fear of being unable to save the people you love."

Tez immediately thought of Suryanagari.

His mother.

His father.

The burning houses.

The screams.

Aryan noticed the change in his face.

"You understand."

Tez looked down.

"Too well."

The First City

Aryan walked toward the wall.

With one touch, the ancient stones came alive.

A picture appeared.

A great city stood beneath a golden sky.

Its walls were enormous.

Water flowed through carefully built channels.

Green fields surrounded it.

People walked through wide streets.

Children studied beneath large trees.

Healers treated the sick.

Farmers worked in the fields.

Scholars wrote on palm leaves.

And seven Guardians walked among ordinary people.

"This was Anantapura," Aryan said.

"The first great city built around the knowledge of the Heart."

Tez looked at the image.

"It was beautiful."

"It was."

"What happened?"

Aryan's eyes darkened.

"We forgot why we had been given knowledge."

The image changed.

The Guardians began arguing.

One group wanted to share everything.

Another wanted to control it.

Then came soldiers.

Fire.

Death.

The city began falling apart.

"The Guardians fought each other," Aryan said.

"Brother against brother."

"Teacher against student."

"Friend against friend."

Tez watched in silence.

"Did you stop them?"

"I tried."

"Did you fail?"

Aryan looked at him.

"Yes."

The Birth of the Black Eclipse

A new image appeared.

Seven Guardians stood before the Heart.

One of them was different.

He wore black robes.

His eyes were filled with anger.

"Who is he?" Tez asked.

"My closest friend."

"What happened to him?"

"He believed the Heart could end death."

Tez frowned.

"End death?"

"Yes."

"He had watched his family die."

"He could not accept it."

"So he searched for a way to defeat death."

"And he found something."

"What?"

Aryan looked at Tez.

"The first secret of the Heart."

Tez waited.

"The Heart could preserve more than knowledge."

"It could preserve the essence of a living person."

Tez's eyes widened.

"Immortality?"

"Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"A form of continued existence."

"Memory."

"Consciousness."

"Life beyond the body."

Tez shook his head.

"That sounds like immortality."

"It sounds like it."

Aryan's voice became firm.

"But it comes with a price."

"What price?"

"Humanity."

The Price of Immortality

Aryan explained that the Heart could preserve a person's essence.

But the process required enormous energy.

The person would gradually lose ordinary human emotions.

Love.

Fear.

Compassion.

Pain.

Even memories could become distorted.

The person might live.

But they would no longer remain fully human.

Tez understood.

"Vardhan."

Aryan nodded.

"He discovered the process."

"So that's what he wants."

"Yes."

"To become immortal."

"Not only immortal."

Aryan looked toward the temple doors.

"He wants to control the process."

"Why?"

"Because he believes death is the greatest enemy."

Tez thought about all the people he had lost.

For a moment, he understood Vardhan's desire.

Then he remembered the burning village.

He remembered what Vardhan had done.

"Death may be painful," Tez said.

"But controlling everyone to avoid it is worse."

Aryan smiled.

"That is why the Heart chose you."

Why Tez?

Tez looked at him sharply.

"Why me?"

Aryan walked closer.

"Because you have lost more than most people."

Tez said nothing.

"You lost your home."

"Your family."

"Your childhood."

"Your sense of safety."

"Yet you did not become like Vardhan."

Tez looked away.

"I wanted revenge."

"Yes."

"You still do."

Tez looked at him.

Aryan nodded.

"That is why your journey is not finished."

"You still carry anger."

Tez clenched his fists.

"Wouldn't you?"

"If I were you?"

Aryan smiled sadly.

"Perhaps."

"That is why I cannot judge you."

The Memory of a Child

The temple became silent.

Then the Heart's light appeared in the air.

Tez saw a small child.

A newborn.

His mother held him in her arms.

Devadatta stood beside her.

The room was simple.

A lamp burned near the wall.

Tez knew this place.

It was the house where he had been born.

His mother's face was full of happiness.

She looked at her child.

"My son."

Tez's eyes filled with tears.

He had almost no memory of that day.

But now he could see it.

His mother kissed his forehead.

Devadatta placed his hand gently on her shoulder.

Then—

The Guardian Seal began glowing.

His mother looked surprised.

The glow became stronger.

A distant rumble shook the room.

The Heart, hidden far away in the mountains, had responded to Tez's birth.

Aryan spoke softly.

"That was the moment everything changed."

Tez watched the vision.

"Who else knew?"

"Your father."

"Your mother."

"Several Guardians."

"And..."

Aryan paused.

"Vardhan."

Tez turned.

"Vardhan was there?"

"Not physically."

"But he sensed the Heart."

"How?"

"Because he had already learned how to listen to it."

Tez's face hardened.

"So he knew about me from the day I was born."

"Yes."

Devadatta's Secret

The vision changed.

Tez saw Devadatta carrying him through the night.

He was leaving Suryanagari.

But the village was peaceful.

No fire.

No soldiers.

No attack.

Devadatta looked worried.

A Guardian rode beside him.

Tez could not see the Guardian's face.

They were speaking.

"Take the child far away."

"Where?"

"Somewhere the Heart cannot reach him."

"Can it be done?"

"No."

"Then what do I do?"

"Raise him as an ordinary boy."

Devadatta looked down at the infant Tez.

"And when the time comes?"

The Guardian answered:

"He will choose."

Tez's chest tightened.

The vision faded.

He looked at Aryan.

"My father knew."

"Yes."

"He knew I was connected to the Heart."

"Yes."

"He tried to hide me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Aryan's answer was simple.

"Because he loved you."

Tez closed his eyes.

The anger he had carried toward his father became mixed with something else.

Pain.

The Night of Suryanagari

Another vision began.

Suryanagari.

The same night.

The attackers were approaching.

But this time Tez saw something he had never seen before.

A Black Eclipse soldier stood near the edge of the village.

He was speaking to someone.

A woman.

Her face was covered.

She handed him a small piece of cloth.

The soldier opened it.

Inside was a drawing.

A young Tez.

The soldier nodded.

Then the woman turned away.

Tez stared.

"Who is she?"

Aryan did not answer.

"Who?"

The woman slowly turned.

For one brief moment, her face became visible.

Tez froze.

He knew her.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

Then the vision disappeared.

Tez turned toward Aryan.

"Who was she?"

Aryan's expression was troubled.

"Someone you will meet again."

"Who?"

"I cannot tell you."

"Why?"

"Because some truths must be discovered."

Tez's anger rose.

"Everyone keeps telling me that."

Aryan looked at him.

"And everyone who hid the truth from you believed they were protecting you."

Tez said nothing.

The Temple Shakes

A huge explosion rocked the temple.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Tez turned toward the doors.

"Vardhan."

Aryan nodded.

"He has entered Anantapura."

Another explosion.

This time much closer.

Voices could be heard outside.

Vaidehi shouted:

"Tez!"

Tez ran toward the door.

Aryan stopped him.

"Wait."

"My friends are outside."

"I know."

"I have to help them."

"You cannot leave yet."

Tez turned angrily.

"Why?"

"Because Vardhan is not attacking the city for revenge."

"Then what does he want?"

Aryan looked toward the floor.

"The chamber beneath this temple."

Tez frowned.

"What is there?"

Aryan hesitated.

"The one thing Vardhan has spent his entire life searching for."

The Secret Beneath Anantapura

Tez looked at the floor.

"What is it?"

"The Amrit-Kund."

Tez had heard the word before.

But never understood its meaning.

"What is it?"

Aryan walked toward the centre of the temple.

"A source."

"Of what?"

"Life."

Tez stared.

"Like the Heart?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"The Heart preserves knowledge."

"The Amrit-Kund preserves life."

Tez's eyes widened.

"Can it make someone immortal?"

Aryan's face became grim.

"It can extend life."

"Under the right conditions."

"And with a terrible price."

"What price?"

Aryan looked directly into Tez's eyes.

"The life of another."

Tez felt cold.

"So Vardhan needs someone to sacrifice."

"Yes."

"Who?"

Aryan did not answer.

Tez's heart began pounding.

"Who?"

Aryan finally spoke.

"You."

The Attack

The temple doors suddenly exploded inward.

Stone shattered.

Tez raised his arm to protect his face.

Through the smoke came Vardhan.

His black robes were covered with dust.

Behind him stood several Black Eclipse warriors.

But Vardhan did not look at them.

He looked only at Tez.

"So," he said quietly.

"You finally met him."

Tez stood between Vardhan and Aryan.

"You wanted the Amrit-Kund."

Vardhan smiled.

"Now you understand."

"You destroyed Suryanagari for this."

"No."

Vardhan stepped forward.

"I destroyed Suryanagari because it was hiding the key."

"What key?"

Vardhan looked at Tez.

"You."

Tez's grip tightened around his weapon.

"You've taken enough from me."

Vardhan smiled.

"Not yet."

He raised his hand.

The Black Eclipse warriors moved forward.

Outside, Vaidehi, Devadatta, Aarav and Bhaskar could be heard fighting their way toward the temple.

Tez looked at Aryan.

"What do I do?"

Aryan answered calmly.

"Choose."

Again.

That word.

The same word the Heart had spoken.

Tez looked at Vardhan.

Then at the ancient Guardian.

Then toward the temple doors.

He understood.

The Heart was not asking him to choose between power and weakness.

It was asking him to choose who he would become.

Tez raised the Guardian Seal.

Golden light filled the chamber.

Vardhan's smile disappeared.

"No."

The light grew stronger.

The ancient walls began to shake.

Aryan looked at Tez.

"Remember this moment."

"Why?"

"Because after tonight, nothing will ever be the same."

A deep sound came from beneath the temple.

Boom.

The floor cracked.

A golden light rose through the cracks.

Vardhan looked down.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

"The chamber is opening."

Tez looked at him.

"What chamber?"

Vardhan whispered:

"The chamber that should have remained closed forever."

The entire temple shook.

Outside, Anantapura's bells began ringing.

One after another.

Across the ancient city.

And beneath Tez's feet, something enormous began to awaken.

Aryan looked at him and spoke his final warning:

"Whatever you see below, Tez... do not let Vardhan make you believe that immortality is the same as life."

The floor split open.

A staircase appeared beneath the temple.

At its bottom, a strange golden light pulsed like a living heart.

Vardhan stared into it.

Then he smiled.

Because after centuries of searching—

he had finally found what he wanted.
