Chapter 27 - JEALOUSY UNCONTAINED

Bella noticed it before anyone said anything.

Owen was avoiding her.

Not openly.

Not in a way she could call out immediately.

But in the small ways that mattered.

He stopped waiting for her after class.

Stopped walking beside her in the corridor.

Stopped replying quickly to her messages.

But he didn't stop trying with Lillian.

That was the part that made it worse.

That morning, Bella entered the classroom earlier than usual.

She scanned the room quickly.

Owen was there.

Lillian wasn't.

Bella felt a small sense of relief.

Finally.

She walked straight to him.

"Owen," she said, softer than usual.

He looked up. "Hey."

"Can we talk?" she asked.

He hesitated.

Then nodded. "Okay."

Bella sat beside him.

Close.

Careful.

"I feel like you've been distant," she said.

Direct this time.

No pretending.

Owen leaned back slightly.

"I've just been busy."

Bella shook her head. "No. That's not it."

He didn't answer.

"You don't talk to me like before," she continued.

Owen exhaled lightly.

"I don't think anything changed."

Bella laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

"Everything changed," she said.

Before Owen could respond—

the door opened.

Lillian walked in.

Owen's eyes moved instantly.

Automatically.

Bella saw it.

Again.

Without hesitation.

Without control.

Something in her snapped.

Not loudly.

But deeply.

She stood up suddenly.

Her chair scraped the floor louder than expected.

"Owen," she said, her voice tighter now.

He looked at her. "What?"

But she didn't answer him.

She turned—

toward Lillian.

"Lillian," Bella called.

The room quieted slightly.

Lillian paused.

Turned.

"Yes?"

Bella walked closer.

Not smiling now.

Not soft.

Not careful.

"Do you always have to be around him?" she asked.

The question landed.

Sharp.

Lillian blinked.

Confused.

"I don't understand."

Bella let out a small breath.

"You don't understand?" she repeated.

Her voice rose slightly.

"You're always with him. Always talking to him. Always sitting with him."

Owen stood up quickly.

"Bella—"

"Let me finish," she snapped.

Lillian stayed still.

Not defensive.

Just… trying to process.

"I don't know what you're trying to do," Bella continued.

"But it's getting obvious."

Silence filled the room.

Lillian's expression changed slightly.

Still calm.

But firmer now.

"I'm not trying to do anything," she said.

Bella laughed.

This time, bitter.

"That's exactly what you always say."

Owen stepped forward.

"Bella, stop this."

She turned to him quickly.

"No, you stop," she said.

Her voice shook now.

"You act like nothing is happening, but you're the one changing everything!"

Owen frowned. "I'm not—"

"You are!" she cut in.

"You don't talk to me anymore. You don't sit with me anymore. But you always have time for her!"

The room was completely silent now.

Lillian looked between them.

Understanding finally starting to settle in.

"Bella," she said quietly.

But Bella didn't want quiet anymore.

"You think I don't see it?" Bella continued.

"You think I don't notice how you look at her?"

Owen froze.

"And you," Bella turned back to Lillian,

"you act like you don't care. Like you're not doing anything. But everything changed when you got involved!"

That was the line.

Lillian's eyes hardened slightly.

Not angry.

But no longer confused.

"I didn't get involved in anything," she said calmly.

Bella shook her head.

"You did."

Owen stepped between them slightly.

"Enough," he said firmly.

Bella went silent.

But her breathing was uneven now.

Owen looked at her.

"This isn't right," he said.

Bella laughed softly.

A broken sound.

"Of course it's not right," she replied.

"Nothing about this is right anymore."

She stepped back.

Her eyes moved between both of them.

Then she turned.

And walked out.

Fast.

Without looking back.

The classroom stayed silent even after she left.

Owen stood still.

Then slowly looked at Lillian.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

Lillian didn't respond immediately.

She just picked up her notebook.

"This is exactly what I wanted to avoid," she said softly.

Then she walked past him.

Leaving Owen standing alone.

Between everything that had just broken—

and everything he still didn't know how to fix.
