Chapter 2 - THE NEW BOY

The cafeteria was louder than usual that afternoon, filled with the clatter of trays, overlapping conversations, and the occasional burst of laughter from different corners. Students moved in clusters—some rushing to grab food before the line got longer, others already seated, deeply engaged in gossip or arguments that would be forgotten by the next day.

Bella walked through the space like she belonged there—like she always did.

Her steps were confident, unhurried. She scanned the room casually, her eyes moving from table to table, acknowledging a few familiar faces with small smiles and nods. A group of girls waved at her from the far end, and she lifted her hand slightly in response before continuing forward.

Then she saw him.

Owen sat alone at one of the middle tables, slightly away from the noisiest groups. A medium-sized plate sat in front of him, and he was focused on his meal, eating without distraction. He didn't seem bothered by the noise around him. If anything, he looked comfortable in his own quiet space.

Bella slowed her steps.

For a brief second, she adjusted her posture—subtle, almost unnoticeable—before walking directly toward him.

She stopped beside his table.

"Hi," she said, her voice light, accompanied by a small, confident smile.

Owen paused mid-bite.

He looked up slowly, as if pulled out of his own thoughts. For a moment, his eyes searched her face, recognizing her, then he gave a slight smile in return.

"Hello," he replied calmly.

Bella shifted her weight slightly and gestured toward the empty chair in front of him.

"Can I?" she asked, tilting her head just a little.

Owen followed her gesture, then nodded once. "Sure."

She pulled out the chair smoothly and sat down, placing her tray on the table. The sound of plastic against the surface was soft compared to the noise around them.

For a few seconds, there was a quiet pause.

Bella picked up her spoon but didn't eat immediately. Instead, she glanced at him again, studying him in a way that wasn't too obvious.

"You're new, right?" she asked.

Owen nodded, swallowing his food before answering. "Yeah."

"How are you finding the school?" she continued.

"It's… alright," he said simply.

Bella smiled faintly, amused by his short answers. "Just alright?"

He shrugged slightly. "Still getting used to it."

Before she could respond, her attention shifted.

Someone had just entered the cafeteria.

Bella's eyes moved toward the entrance, and almost instantly, she spotted Lillian.

Lillian stepped in quietly, almost as if she didn't want to disturb the atmosphere—even though no one was paying attention to her. She held her tray carefully with both hands, her gaze focused ahead as she searched for a place to sit.

Bella's expression brightened.

"Lillian!" she called out, raising her hand slightly.

The name cut softly through the noise—not loud enough to silence the room, but enough to reach its target.

Lillian paused.

She looked in Bella's direction, her eyes finding her almost immediately. For a brief moment, she seemed unsure, then she gave a small, gentle smile.

She adjusted her grip on the tray and began walking toward them.

Her steps were steady but quiet, her presence much calmer compared to Bella's energy.

When she reached the table, she stopped beside them.

"Hi," she said softly, her voice almost blending into the surrounding noise.

Owen looked up at her again.

"Hi," he replied, just as calmly.

There was a short moment where neither of them spoke further.

Bella leaned forward slightly, breaking the silence with ease.

"Owen, meet my friend Lillian," she said, gesturing lightly between them.

Owen nodded once more, his attention briefly shifting between the two girls. "Hi," he repeated, a little more clearly this time.

Lillian didn't speak again.

Instead, she gave a small wave—simple, polite. Not cold, not distant… just quiet.

Bella noticed, but she didn't comment on it. She simply smiled, as if everything was exactly how it should be.

"Sit," Bella said, tapping the chair beside her.

Lillian nodded and carefully placed her tray on the table before sitting down. She adjusted her position slightly, making sure she wasn't too close, her movements neat and controlled.

For a moment, the three of them sat together in silence.

The noise of the cafeteria filled the gaps between them.

Bella picked up her spoon first.

"Let's eat," she said casually.

Owen nodded. "Yeah."

Lillian gave a small nod as well.

They began eating.

Bella ate with ease, occasionally glancing up, clearly comfortable in the moment. She seemed like she could talk at any second, like silence wasn't something she needed but simply allowed.

Owen ate steadily, not rushing, not dragging—just calm.

Lillian, on the other hand, ate quietly, her focus mostly on her food. But every now and then, her eyes lifted—briefly observing the two of them before returning to her plate.

At one point, Bella laughed softly at something she remembered, though she didn't explain it. Owen looked at her, slightly curious, but didn't ask. Lillian didn't react, though her fingers paused for just a second before continuing.

Time passed.

The noise in the cafeteria shifted as students began finishing their meals.

Bella wiped her mouth lightly with a tissue and leaned back in her chair.

"That was good," she said.

Owen nodded in agreement. "Yeah."

Lillian didn't say anything, but she placed her spoon down neatly, signaling she was done.

For a brief moment, the three of them sat there—together, yet not fully connected.

It wasn't awkward.

But it wasn't complete either.

Bella looked between them, her smile still present, unaware of the subtle differences in their silence.

Owen glanced at Lillian once more, thoughtful but unreadable.

Lillian avoided his gaze, her attention already shifting elsewhere.

Then, almost naturally, they began to gather their things.

Trays lifted. Chairs moved.

And just like that, the moment ended.

Simple.

Quiet.

But something about it lingered—like the beginning of something none of them fully understood yet.
