Chapter 7 - The Truth He Almost Told

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence felt heavier than before, not because of the place, but because of what had just happened.

Liora sat up slowly, her body still tense, her breath uneven. The memory of that realm lingered in her bones like a shadow that refused to leave.

"It said my name," she whispered.

Kael did not respond immediately.

She turned to him, sharper this time. "It knew who I was."

"I heard it," he said quietly.

"That is not normal, Kael."

"No," he admitted. "It is not."

Liora pushed herself to her feet, frustration rising beneath the fear. "Then explain it."

Kael stood as well, slower, more controlled. His gaze avoided hers for a brief moment, scanning the space around them instead as if searching for something that was not there.

"You already know this is not just about the library anymore," he said.

"That is not an explanation."

"It is the truth."

Liora stepped closer. "Then give me the rest of it."

This time, he looked at her.

Really looked.

There was something different in his expression now. Not just guarded, not just distant.

Conflict.

"You are asking questions that do not have simple answers," he said.

"I am not asking for simple," she replied. "I am asking for honest."

The words settled between them.

Kael exhaled slowly, as though weighing something carefully.

Then, finally, he spoke.

"That realm was not part of the library's controlled structure," he said. "It was something deeper. Something broken."

Liora crossed her arms slightly. "And you knew that."

A pause.

"Yes."

Her jaw tightened. "And you still let me open the door."

"I tried to stop you."

"You did not try very hard."

His eyes flickered. "Because I knew you would not listen."

"That does not make it right."

"No," he said quietly. "It does not."

Silence again.

But this time, it was different.

Not empty.

Not uncertain.

Tense.

Liora took a slow breath. "You have been here before."

It was not a guess.

Kael did not deny it.

"Yes."

The word was soft.

But it changed everything.

Her eyes widened slightly. "You have been to that realm before."

"Yes."

"How."

Another pause.

Then, "Because I was not always just a guide."

Liora felt her pulse quicken. "Then what are you."

Kael's gaze shifted away from her again, but not out of avoidance. More like he was choosing his words carefully.

"Someone who made a mistake," he said.

"That is vague."

"It is intentional."

Liora stepped closer again, her voice lower now but more intense. "That thing called you an anomaly. Just like me."

He did not respond.

"That means you do not belong here either," she continued.

Still nothing.

"Kael."

Finally, he looked at her again.

And this time, he did not look away.

"I know how these realms work because I have crossed them before," he said. "Not once. Not by accident."

Liora felt a chill run through her. "You chose to go there."

"Yes."

"Why."

His expression darkened slightly.

"For the same reason you did," he said. "Curiosity."

She shook her head immediately. "No. That is not the same."

"It is closer than you think."

Liora let out a quiet breath, trying to steady herself. "That realm tried to contain us. It reacted like we were not supposed to exist there."

"Because we were not."

"And yet you knew how to survive it."

"Barely," he corrected.

She studied him carefully now.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every thing he was not saying.

"You are still not telling me everything," she said.

"No."

"Why."

Kael hesitated.

Then he said something different.

"Because the moment you understand everything, you will not be able to turn back."

Liora frowned slightly. "Turn back from what."

"This," he said, gesturing around them. "The deeper layers. The truths this place is built to hide."

She held his gaze.

"And you think I would walk away."

"I think you should."

A quiet silence followed.

Then Liora shook her head.

"That is not going to happen."

A faint, almost resigned expression crossed his face. "I know."

Her voice softened slightly, though the tension remained. "Then stop trying to protect me from something I am already part of."

That made him pause.

Not long.

But long enough to matter.

"You are not just part of this," he said quietly. "You are connected to it in a way that changes the rules."

Her chest tightened slightly. "Because of my ability."

"Because of more than that."

The words landed heavily.

Liora's thoughts raced. "My past."

Kael did not answer.

But he did not deny it either.

That was enough.

Before she could press further, the air around them shifted again.

Not violently this time.

Subtly.

But enough for Liora to feel it instantly.

"Something changed," she said.

Kael nodded slightly. "Yes."

"What now."

He glanced ahead.

The corridor in front of them had reformed once more, but it looked different from before.

More stable.

More deliberate.

Like a path that had been chosen for them.

"It looks like we are not done yet," he said.

Liora followed his gaze, her determination settling back into place.

"Good," she said quietly.

Kael looked at her, a faint trace of something unreadable in his eyes. "You say that now."

She met his gaze without hesitation.

"I will say it again later."

For a brief moment, something shifted between them.

Not trust.

Not fully.

But something closer than before.

Then the moment passed.

And the library moved again.

The path ahead opened slowly, as though inviting them forward.

Or leading them somewhere they had no choice but to go.

Liora took a step.

Then another.

Whatever Kael was hiding.

Whatever her past held.

Whatever had just noticed them beyond the library.

She would face it.

Not later.

Not eventually.

Now.

Because the deeper they went, the clearer one truth became.

This story was not just unfolding.

It was tightening.

Around her.

Around Kael.

Around everything.

And somewhere ahead, hidden within shifting walls and silent watchers…

the next answer was waiting.
