Chapter 10 - THE RECKONING

MIRA'S POV

The ancient wolf's howl echoes through the compound for hours.

It does not attack. Does not come closer. Just circles the territory and makes its presence known. Every wolf in Shadow Pack can feel it. Every warrior is on alert. Every guard has weapons ready.

Rhen cancels the meeting with Kael immediately.

But then word comes that Kael is not canceling his visit. He is arriving tomorrow. Under flag of truce. With a small guard.

It is like the timing is deliberately cruel. Kael arriving while an ancient predator circles their borders. The mate bond burning while the power inside Mira screams for her to ascend. Everything collapsing at once.

Mira stands alone in the darkness that night.

She is in one of the tower observation posts that overlooks the industrial wastelands that make up Shadow Pack territory. The factories are dark and abandoned. The streets are empty. But somewhere out there in that wasteland, an ancient wolf is hunting.

Somewhere closer, Kael is approaching.

She can feel both of them. Can feel the mate bond pulling her toward Silverwood like a hook in her chest. Can feel the ancient wolf's hunger coming from the Deep Wilds. Can feel the power inside her responding to both pulls.

The mate bond is strongest.

It is almost overwhelming now. Every second that passes makes it harder to resist. Kael is close enough that she can sense his emotions. His desperation. His need to reclaim what he threw away. His belief that they belong together because of supernatural force.

Part of her wants to believe him.

Rhen finds her on the tower without her hearing him approach.

"You should not be alone," he says quietly. His voice carries weight and concern.

"I need to think," Mira says. She does not turn around. Just continues staring out at the darkness.

"What are you thinking," Rhen asks.

Mira takes a long time to answer.

"I am thinking about how none of this was supposed to happen," she finally says. "I was supposed to be a weak Luna forever. I was supposed to live a quiet life and be grateful that someone chose me. I was supposed to disappear and be forgotten. But instead I am here. And I am powerful. And the man who rejected me is coming to reclaim me and an ancient monster is hunting me and I do not know who I am anymore."

Rhen steps beside her. He does not touch her. Just stands beside her and lets her speak.

"I will see him," Mira says. The decision comes out solid and final. "I will see Kael. But only if you are there. I need you there. I need to face what I was and what I have chosen to become. And I need to do it with you watching so I remember that I have a choice."

Rhen nods though she can feel the jealousy radiating off him. He knows that seeing Kael will be difficult. Knows that the mate bond is powerful. Knows that Kael is not coming here by accident.

Kael is coming because he finally understands her value.

"Whatever you need," Rhen says. "I will be there."

The next morning Mira prepares for the confrontation.

She washes in water that has been heated. She braids her dark hair carefully. Each braid is tight and controlled. She chooses clothes that represent her position now. Not the soft Luna dresses of Silverwood. But dark pants and a dark shirt that fit her like armor.

The power underneath her skin glows faintly as she moves. Blue and silver light that marks her as something other than human.

She is no longer a broken Luna.

She is a blood witch. Ancient and powerful and impossible to control.

She looks at herself in the mirror and barely recognizes the female staring back.

When did this happen. When did the scared girl who hid from everyone become this. When did the weakness transform into something so dark and dangerous.

The answer is terrifying because she does not know if she likes who she is becoming.

Rhen waits for her outside the meeting room. His expression is controlled but she can see the jealousy burning underneath. He knows that Kael is going to look at her like she is something precious. Knows that the mate bond is going to pull at both of them. Knows that this meeting could change everything.

"Ready," he asks.

"No," Mira answers honestly. "But I am going to do it anyway."

They enter the meeting room together.

Kael is already there.

He stands by the window looking out at Shadow Pack territory. He has not seen her yet. He is dressed in his Alpha clothes. The expensive furs and the marks that show his status. He looks powerful and controlled and completely certain that he belongs here.

Then he turns and sees her.

His entire body goes still.

For a moment he just stares at her like he cannot believe what he is seeing. Like the female in front of him is not the broken Luna he rejected months ago. Like he is looking at something impossible.

"Mira," he says and his voice carries the pull of the mate bond. It is a call that is supposed to make her weak. Supposed to make her surrender to the connection.

She feels it try to work. Feels the bond tug at her chest and pull her toward him. But she stands firm.

"Kael," she says flatly. No warmth. No recognition. Nothing except cold acknowledgment of his presence.

He steps toward her and Rhen immediately moves to block his path. Just slightly. Just enough to make clear that Kael will not get close without permission.

Kael's eyes flash with anger but he stops moving.

"I came here to tell you that I was wrong," Kael says. His voice is desperate and raw. "I made the worst mistake of my life when I announced Lyssa as my second Luna. When I let you go. When I did not come after you immediately."

Mira watches his face. Looking for truth. Looking for some sign that he actually understands what he did.

"I have felt the mate bond every single day," Kael continues. "I can sense you across the distance. I know what you have become. I know you are powerful. And I know that I was a fool for ever making you feel like you were not enough."

The mate bond burns hotter but Mira refuses to respond to it.

"You felt the bond," she says coldly. "But you did not come looking for me. You let me disappear. You let my parents sell me. You stayed in Silverwood playing Alpha while I was in a basement being beaten."

Kael's face crumples. He looks like she just struck him.

"I did not know where you were," he says. "Your parents did not tell anyone. Your father made a deal and kept it secret. By the time I realized you were gone, all I had was the mate bond to guide me. And following that bond took time."

"Time you did not spend looking," Mira says. "You spent it consolidating your power. You spent it with Lyssa. You spent it trying to be the perfect Alpha. And only when word started spreading about what I had become did you suddenly care enough to come find me."

Kael takes another step forward and Rhen growls. It is not a threat exactly but it is a clear warning.

"I care about you," Kael says. His eyes are desperate. "Not about your power. You have to believe me. The mate bond proves we belong together. It proves that we are supposed to be as one."

Mira laughs but it comes out wrong. Bitter.

"The mate bond proves that a supernatural force exists between us," she says. "It does not prove that you love me. It does not prove that you see me. It does not prove anything except that we are connected by magic that neither of us chose."

She steps closer to him. Not because the bond is pulling her but because she wants to look him in the eye.

"You rejected me publicly," she says quietly. "You made me feel worthless in front of everyone who mattered. You chose status over a female who loved you completely. And now you want me back because I have power. Because I am something worth having. That is not love, Kael. That is possession."

Kael's jaw tightens. She can see the struggle happening behind his eyes. Part of him knows she is right. Part of him is still trying to convince himself that the bond means something.

"I will wait for you," he finally says. His voice is breaking. "No matter how long it takes. I will prove to you that I have changed. I will prove that I see you now. And when you are ready, the mate bond will bring you home."

Before Mira can respond, alarms start sounding throughout the compound.

Warriors are running. Guards are shouting. The sound of vehicles arriving at high speed.

Rhen immediately moves to the window. His expression goes completely dark.

"It is not the ancient wolf," he says quietly. "It is worse."

He turns back to them and his face is grim.

"The Council," he says. "They have arrived. Full force. More Alphas than I have ever seen assembled. And they are here for you."

Kael's face goes pale.

"How much time do we have," Mira asks.

"Not much," Rhen says. "They are already at the borders and they are making demands. They want you delivered to them immediately or they will take this compound by force."

Mira feels the power inside her rise. She can feel the ancient wolf getting closer. Can feel Kael's presence through the mate bond. Can feel the Council's power gathering at the borders like a storm.

Everything she feared is happening at once.

"We need to move," Rhen says. "Now. Before they breach the perimeter."

But Kael steps forward. His Alpha status burns through the room.

"I will stand with you," he tells Mira. His voice is solid and certain. "Whatever happens next, I will stand with you against the Council."

Rhen's eyes flash with fury at the offer.

And Mira realizes that the real confrontation is only just beginning.
