Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 The Dance

The nursing home was incredibly quiet.

The small room smelled faintly of medicine and old age.

Peggy Carter lay perfectly still in a simple white bed.

She was very old, fragile, and dying.

Her breathing was slow, weak, and uneven.

Her mind was like a room filled with thick, gray fog.

Her memories were fading away day by day.

She couldn't remember her friends' faces anymore.

Sometimes, she couldn't even remember her own name.

She was just lying there, waiting for the long sleep to finally take her.

Then, the door opened softly.

Two men walked into the room.

Sam stayed quietly by the door, standing in the shadows.

Steve slowly walked up to the edge of her bed. He looked down at the old, frail woman.

His heart broke, and tears immediately filled his bright blue eyes.

"Peggy,"

Steve whispered. His voice was shaking.

Peggy slowly opened her eyes.

They were cloudy and unfocused.

She couldn't see the man standing over her clearly.

But she heard him speaking.

That sound... it hit her right in the soul. It was a voice she had replayed in her head a million times over the last seventy years.

Even with her mind falling apart, her heart remembered exactly who that voice belonged to.

"Steve...?"

Peggy whispered, her voice cracking. She thought she was finally dreaming her last dream.

Steve sat down in the chair next to her bed.

He reached out and gently held her wrinkled, shaking hand in both of his.

"I'm here, Peggy,"

Steve cried softly, smiling through his tears.

"And I am not going anywhere."

Sam quietly stepped forward.

He handed the glowing green Longevity Pill to Steve.

"Give it to her, Captain,"

Sam said gently.

Steve nodded. With a trembling hand, he placed the small, emerald pill gently into Peggy's dry mouth.

It didn't need to be chewed or swallowed.

The moment the pill touched her tongue, it melted instantly.

Peggy felt something incredibly sweet, like fresh honey and spring rain, slide down her throat.

Instantly, the thick, gray fog inside her head was blown away.

Every single memory flooded back into her mind in perfect clarity. She remembered the war.

She remembered the red dress.

She remembered the radio static, and she remembered the exact moment she lost him in the ice.

Then, the powerful magic of the pill rushed through her veins.

A soft, warm green light began to glow from inside her body.

Peggy gasped. She felt incredibly refreshed.

The deep, heavy pain in her bones vanished completely.

Her weak, struggling heart suddenly beat with strong, powerful thumps.

Under Steve's amazed eyes, her body stopped falling apart.

The flow of time rapidly reversed.

Her thin, wrinkled skin pulled tight and became perfectly smooth.

The gray in her hair faded away, replaced by thick, beautiful, dark brown curls.

The cloudy weakness in her eyes completely disappeared.

In just a few seconds, the dying old woman was gone.

Peggy took a deep, strong breath.

She felt the vibrant, youthful energy flowing through every inch of her body.

She slowly opened her bright, clear brown eyes.

The blurry room was sharp again.

And right beside her, holding her strong, young hand, was the man she had been waiting for her entire life.

He hadn't aged a single day.

Tears of pure joy spilled down Peggy's smooth cheeks.

"You're late,"

Peggy whispered softly, her voice strong and full of love.

Steve smiled, lifting her hand and gently kissing her knuckles.

"I know,"

Steve replied, his voice full of absolute happiness.

"But I am finally ready for our dance."

Sam smiled as he watched them hold each other.

This was a deeply private moment.

They had seventy years of waiting and heartbreak to catch up on. He didn't want to ruin it.

He quietly took a few steps backward and slipped out into the hallway, gently closing the door behind him to give them personal space.

As Sam turned around, he saw a familiar figure walking down the quiet corridor.

It was Natasha.

She was still wearing her sleek black S.H.I.E.L.D. suit.

When she saw Sam, the serious spy look on her face melted away.

A warm, beautiful smile spread across her lips.

She had just finished her latest mission, and seeing him standing there made her realize exactly how much she had missed him.

Natasha walked right up to him. She didn't hesitate.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a soft, loving kiss.

"I missed you,"

Natasha whispered, resting her forehead against his chest.

"I missed you too,"

Sam smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist.

Natasha looked over his shoulder at the closed door to Peggy's room.

"Fury called me,"

Natasha said quietly.

"He told me you brought the Captain here. Fury was very confused. He thought you were just bringing Steve to say a final goodbye before she passed away."

Natasha let out a soft, knowing laugh.

She looked up into Sam's deep eyes.

Natasha smirked.

"He has absolutely no idea that you can make people young again, does he?"

"No, he doesn't,"

Sam chuckled softly.

"Fury is going to have a very big headache when Peggy walks out of that room looking twenty-five years old."

Sam took Natasha's hand, and they slowly started to walk down the hallway together.

"But giving them their youth back is just the first part,"

Sam told her, his voice turning a little more serious.

"I have a much bigger plan for them. I want to recruit Peggy into the team. And I want them both to walk the path of cultivation."

Natasha raised an eyebrow, listening closely.

"Think about their foundations, Nat,"

Sam explained.

"Steve has the Super Soldier Serum. His physical body and stamina are already pushed beyond human limits. Peggy just absorbed a massive amount of pure, ancient Qi from the Longevity Pill. If I teach them breathing techniques..."

Sam paused and smiled.

"...and if they learn how to share that energy through Dual Cultivation, they will be incredible together."

Natasha's eyes lit up with sudden understanding.

She was a master tactician, and she saw the brilliant logic in his plan immediately.

Steve was a legendary fighter and a natural leader.

Peggy was one of the brilliant minds that originally built S.H.I.E.L.D.

They were already a perfect match.

"That is a genuinely great idea,"

Natasha agreed, squeezing his hand tightly.

"The threats we are going to face in the future are not normal. We need people we can completely trust. With Steve and Peggy cultivating together on the team, our overall strength will increase several fold."

Sam nodded.

Between Tony building Qi-enhanced armor, the girls getting stronger at the mansion, and now the Captain and his girl, they were building an unstoppable force.
