Chapter 1 - CONTRACT MARRIAGE WITH MY BOSS

Chapter 1: The Offer

The rain fell like a warning.

Cold. Relentless. Unforgiving.

Lila Carter stood under the dim streetlight, her thin blouse clinging to her skin, her fingers trembling as she tightened her grip on the hospital bill in her hand.

$48,000.

Her vision blurred.

Not from the rain.

From fear.

"Miss Carter," the doctor's voice echoed in her head. "Your mother needs surgery immediately. If we delay any longer…"

She swallowed hard.

Delay… meant death.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She had begged. Pleaded. Promised to pay.

But promises didn't save lives.

Money did.

And she had none.

A sharp honk pulled her back to reality. A car sped past, splashing muddy water onto her already soaked skirt. She didn't even react.

What was the point?

Everything was already ruined.

Her phone buzzed in her hand.

Unknown number.

For a moment, she hesitated before answering.

"…Hello?"

"Miss Lila Carter."

The deep voice on the other end sent an unexplainable chill down her spine.

"Yes?"

"Report to the office. Now."

Her brows furrowed. "Office? But it's already—"

"Now."

The call ended.

Lila stared at the dark screen, her heart beating unevenly.

Only one person spoke like that.

Cold. Commanding. Absolute.

Adrian Blackwood.

Her boss.

The towering glass building loomed above her like a giant as she stepped inside, dripping wet and exhausted.

The receptionist looked up in surprise. "Miss Carter? You're still here?"

"I was… called," she replied softly.

No one questioned it further.

Because when Adrian Blackwood called, you didn't ask why.

You obeyed.

The elevator ride to the top floor felt longer than usual. Her reflection in the mirrored wall looked like a stranger—pale, tired, and barely holding together.

The doors opened with a soft ding.

Silence greeted her.

The entire executive floor was empty.

Except for one office.

The lights were on.

Her chest tightened.

Each step toward his door felt heavier than the last. She raised her hand and knocked.

"Come in."

That voice again.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Lila pushed the door open.

And froze.

Adrian Blackwood stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his back facing her. The city lights stretched endlessly behind him, making him look untouchable… like a man carved from power itself.

His suit was perfect. As always.

Not a single wrinkle.

Not a single flaw.

Unlike her.

"You're late."

His voice cut through the silence without him turning around.

"I came as fast as I could, sir," she said, lowering her gaze.

A pause.

Then slowly… he turned.

Lila's breath hitched.

Adrian Blackwood was the kind of man people feared before they even understood why. Sharp jawline. Piercing dark eyes. A presence that demanded control without effort.

And right now…

Those eyes were on her.

Studying her.

Like she was something to be analyzed… or used.

Her fingers tightened at her sides.

"You're in trouble," he said.

Her heart dropped.

"I—I don't understand—"

"You mishandled the Henderson files."

Her eyes widened. "No, sir! I—"

"The company lost a major deal today."

Each word landed like a hammer.

"That mistake leads back to you."

"That's not true!" she blurted out, panic rising in her chest. "I submitted everything correctly. Someone must have—"

"Enough."

Silence.

Heavy. Crushing silence.

Tears burned behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

If she lost this job…

Her mother…

No.

She couldn't.

"Please," her voice softened, shaking. "You have to believe me. I didn't do it."

Adrian walked toward her slowly.

Each step deliberate.

Each movement calculated.

Until he stopped right in front of her.

Too close.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

He looked down at her soaked clothes, her pale face, the desperation she tried so hard to hide.

"I know."

Her eyes snapped up.

"What?"

"I know you didn't do it."

Confusion flickered across her face.

"Then why—"

"Because," he cut in smoothly, "whether you did it or not… you're the easiest one to blame."

Her breath caught.

That… wasn't fairness.

That was power.

And he had all of it.

"So this is it?" she whispered. "You're firing me?"

Another pause.

But this time…

Something changed.

A faint, unreadable expression crossed his face.

"No."

Her brows knitted together.

"No?"

Adrian turned away, walking back to his desk. He picked up a file and placed it in front of her.

"Sign it."

Lila stared at the document, her fingers hesitating as she opened it.

Her eyes scanned the first line.

And her world stopped.

Marriage Contract Agreement.

Her heart skipped.

"…What?"

She looked up at him, certain she had read it wrong.

But Adrian's expression remained calm.

Unshaken.

"As of tomorrow," he said, "you will become my wife."

The room spun.

"I—this isn't funny," she said weakly.

"I'm not joking."

Her chest rose and fell rapidly. "Why would I ever—"

"I will pay all your debts."

Her voice died instantly.

Silence filled the room again.

But this time…

It was different.

Heavy with temptation.

Danger.

Hope.

"I'll cover your mother's surgery," he continued, his tone steady, almost indifferent. "All hospital expenses. In full."

Tears rushed to her eyes.

No…

No, this couldn't be real.

"You'll also receive a monthly allowance large enough to change your life completely."

Her fingers trembled.

This was everything she needed.

Everything she had prayed for.

But—

"What's the catch?" she whispered.

Adrian's gaze locked onto hers.

Cold.

Direct.

"You will act as my wife for one year."

Her throat tightened.

"A public marriage," he continued. "You will attend events with me. Live in my house. Follow my rules."

"And after one year?" she asked quietly.

"We divorce."

Just like that.

Simple.

Clean.

Heartless.

"No emotions. No complications. No falling in love."

The words hit harder than she expected.

Lila looked down at the contract again.

Her mother's face flashed in her mind.

Weak.

Fading.

Dying.

Then she looked back at him.

At the man who could save her…

Or ruin her completely.

"Why me?" she asked.

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"Because you're desperate."

Her chest tightened.

"And because," he added, his voice lowering slightly, "you have nothing to lose."

Silence stretched between them.

He wasn't wrong.

That was the worst part.

Her fingers hovered over the pen on the desk.

This was insane.

Wrong.

Dangerous.

But…

Her mother needed her.

And this man was offering a miracle.

At a price.

Her hand slowly reached for the pen.

Adrian watched her closely.

Waiting.

Like he already knew her answer.

The pen felt heavy in her grip.

Her heart pounded wildly.

Once she signed this…

There was no going back.

No escape.

No normal life.

Just him.

His rules.

His world.

And whatever darkness came with it.

She took a shaky breath.

Then—

She signed.

The moment the ink touched the paper…

Adrian smiled.

Not warm.

Not kind.

But victorious.

"Good," he said.

Lila looked up, her chest tightening at the expression on his face.

Something about it felt…

Dangerous.

Like she had just stepped into something far bigger than she understood.

Adrian leaned slightly closer, his voice dropping into a low, controlled whisper.

"Welcome to your new life… Mrs. Blackwood."

Her heart skipped.

But not from excitement.

From fear.

Because deep down…

Lila knew one thing for certain.

This wasn't just a contract.

It was the beginning of a storm.

And she had just walked straight into it.
