Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The First Hunt

The black thread pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then it twitched—like it had noticed him.

Li Chen froze where he stood.

A chill crept up his spine, slow and deliberate, like something unseen was brushing against his soul.

[Warning: Target Awareness Increasing]

"…It can feel me?"

The words barely left his lips.

The thread above the distant figure writhed violently, twisting in the darkness like a living serpent. Unlike the gray threads he had seen before, unlike even the golden thread he had stolen—

This one was unstable.

Violent.

Hungry.

Li Chen's instincts screamed at him to leave.

Every fiber of his being told him this was wrong.

Dangerous.

Beyond him.

But his feet didn't move.

Instead—

He took a step forward.

The night deepened as he entered the outer sect forest.

The air grew colder.

Heavier.

The sounds of insects faded, then vanished entirely. Even the wind seemed to retreat, as if unwilling to disturb whatever lurked ahead.

Only the thread remained.

Guiding him.

Calling him.

"…What are you?" Li Chen whispered.

No answer came.

Only silence.

Step by step, he moved closer until the source finally came into view.

A disciple stood beneath a withered tree.

His back faced Li Chen.

He didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't react.

Too still.

Li Chen narrowed his eyes.

"…Outer sect disciple?"

Nothing.

The black thread above the man's head twisted more violently now, snapping and curling like it was trying to break free of something unseen.

Li Chen's heartbeat quickened.

[Target: Unknown]

[Fate Classification: Corrupted]

[Risk Level: High]

He exhaled slowly.

High risk.

That meant one thing.

High reward.

[Devour Success Probability: 41%]

Forty-one percent.

Not good.

Not safe.

But not impossible.

Li Chen clenched his fist.

"If I walk away now…"

He would remain weak.

Remain prey.

Remain nothing.

His gaze hardened.

"…I didn't come this far to hesitate."

Slowly, carefully, he raised his hand.

The moment he did—

The thread snapped toward him.

Li Chen's pupils shrank.

Too fast.

Before he could react—

Crack.

The disciple's neck twisted.

Bone shifted unnaturally.

Then—

He turned.

Li Chen's breath caught.

The man's eyes were pitch black.

No whites.

No pupils.

Just endless darkness.

"…You see it too."

The voice was wrong.

Layered.

Distorted.

As if multiple beings spoke at once.

Li Chen's body tensed instantly.

Danger.

"You shouldn't have come," the figure continued.

Its lips curled into a smile.

Too wide.

Too unnatural.

"You shouldn't have seen it."

The black thread exploded outward.

It no longer floated.

It lashed.

Like a whip made of darkness itself.

BOOM!

The ground where Li Chen had stood shattered apart as he dodged at the last second.

His heart pounded violently.

"This isn't human…"

No.

This thing—

Was something else entirely.

[Warning: Corrupted Entity Detected]

Entity.

Not disciple.

Li Chen's mind raced.

Run.

He needed to run.

Now.

But his legs didn't move.

Because the thread—

Was right there.

Closer than ever.

Within reach.

Power surged in his chest at the sight.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

Overwhelming.

"…Just one cut."

That was all it would take.

Just one.

The entity tilted its head again, watching him.

"You want it."

Its voice echoed unnaturally through the air.

"You can feel it."

Li Chen's fingers trembled.

His breathing slowed.

"…Yes."

"…I do."

The entity laughed.

A hollow, broken sound that sent chills through the forest.

"Then come."

The thread lunged again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More violent.

Li Chen moved—

But not backward.

Forward.

His eyes locked onto the thread.

His hand cut through the air.

Toward the darkness.

Toward power.

"Cut."

The instant his fingers touched it—

Everything changed.

The thread didn't break.

It grabbed him.

Li Chen's eyes widened.

"What—?!"

The darkness surged into his arm like a living flood.

Cold.

Violent.

Hungry.

It wasn't being devoured.

It was devouring him.

[Error]

[Corrupted Fate Resistance Detected]

Pain exploded through his body.

Li Chen dropped to one knee, veins beneath his skin turning black as something spread rapidly through him.

"…No…!"

His body convulsed.

His mind fractured.

The entity stepped closer.

Slow.

Calm.

"You thought you could take it?"

Its voice deepened.

More monstrous.

"You don't devour corrupted fate…"

It leaned close.

"…Corrupted fate devours you."

Li Chen's vision blurred.

His consciousness began to slip.

The darkness inside him spread further.

Consuming.

Erasing.

This was it.

He had made a mistake.

A fatal one.

But then—

Something inside him snapped.

Not outside.

Inside.

A golden light burst from his chest.

The thread he had stolen—

It reacted.

Violently.

Gold and black collided.

Light against darkness.

Order against chaos.

Li Chen's body trembled violently as the two forces clashed within him.

[System Override Triggered]

The entity paused.

For the first time—

Its expression changed.

"…Interesting."

The golden light surged stronger.

Forcing the corruption back.

Burning it.

Rejecting it.

Li Chen gasped, collapsing forward as the darkness retreated from his body.

But not completely.

A fragment remained.

Small.

But alive.

Waiting.

The system flickered.

[New Trait Acquired]

[Corrupted Fate Fragment – Integrated]

Li Chen's pupils shifted.

For a brief moment—

Black.

Then normal.

Silence returned.

The forest exhaled.

The entity stepped back slowly, studying him with a new intensity.

"…You survived."

No surprise.

Only curiosity.

Li Chen forced himself to stand.

His body trembled.

His breathing uneven.

But his eyes—

Were different now.

Colder.

Sharper.

"…I didn't come here to die."

The entity smiled again.

But this time—

There was caution in it.

"Good."

The black thread coiled tighter around its body.

"Then let's see…"

Its voice dropped lower.

"…what you become."

The ground trembled.

The thread expanded again.

Larger.

Stronger.

More violent than before.

Li Chen's heart pounded.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Because now—

It wasn't just a hunt anymore.

It was a test.

Of whether he could stand against something beyond fate.

Or be consumed by it.

The thread lashed forward again.

Faster than before.

Li Chen moved—

But this time—

Something was different.

He could see it.

Not just the thread—

But its flow.

Its weakness.

A flaw.

The corrupted fragment within him pulsed.

Resonating.

Guiding him.

Li Chen stepped forward.

Not in desperation.

But with intent.

His hand rose again.

Steady.

Focused.

"Again."

The moment the thread struck—

He moved.

Not away.

Through it.

His fingers cut across the thread's core.

A ripple spread.

The entity's smile vanished.

"What—?"

The thread trembled violently.

For the first time—

It weakened.

Li Chen's eyes gleamed.

He had found it.

The weakness.

The flaw in corrupted fate.

His grip tightened.

This time—

He wouldn't fail.

Because now—

He wasn't just stealing fate.

He was learning how to devour it.

And as the darkness surged once more—

Li Chen smiled.

Cold.

Hungry.

Terrifying.

Because this time—

He wasn't the one being hunted.

He was adapting.

Evolving.

Becoming something neither heaven nor corruption had ever seen before.

And deep within the darkness—

For the first time—

The entity felt it.

Fear.
