Elise screamed from upstairs.
I was halfway through a report with Callum when the sound reached us. I dropped the papers and ran.
By the time I reached her room, Petra and the doctor were already holding her on the bed. Her body jerked hard enough to pull the sheet loose, but her eyes stayed closed.
"Elise."
I got beside her and took her hand.
Another scream came out of her.
It had started three days ago.
The first time, half the house had come running because we thought she'd finally woken up.
She hadn't. She screamed with her eyes closed, then went still again. Now it was happening at least once a day. Sometimes twice.
"Elise, I'm here."
Her eyes opened, and they were black.
I held her hand tighter. Then the black changed to gold. Then white. Her eyes closed again, and the tension left her body.
The doctor immediately checked her pulse.
I waited until he finished.
"Well?"
"Heart rate is coming down."
