Chapter 58 - 058: The ANBU's Most Dangerous Duty

The sun had barely dipped below the horizon when Shorai pushed himself through another grueling training session. His breaths came in sharp, rhythmic bursts as he moved with fluid grace, weaving the speed of Swift Release with intricate elemental chakra control. Each strike and footfall was precise, honed by hours of relentless practice. Yet, beneath the physical exertion, his mind churned with a restless urgency. The Uchiha compound called to him—a silent enigma amplified by Danzō's cryptic warnings.

Once his drills were complete, Shorai slipped toward the district. He moved with calculated silence, a ghost among the evening shadows. This time, he relied purely on his pulse-based sensory skills; it was both a training exercise and a gauge of his natural growth. His heart beat steadily—not from fear, but from the weight of knowing he was being watched. His range was still too limited to pinpoint the observers, but the prickle on his neck told him the net was closed.

He was a few blocks from the perimeter when a shadow detached itself from the darkness. Eagle, the ever-watchful ANBU operative, stepped forward. His presence was a physical barrier.

"Shorai," Eagle's voice was low, resonating with a quiet authority. "Orders from the Hokage. You are to return to your quarters and prepare for tomorrow. This area is restricted. No trespassing."

Shorai met Eagle's masked gaze, his own eyes unflinching. "I understand. But the Uchiha compound holds answers I require."

Eagle's posture softened by a fraction, but his resolve remained iron. "Whatever you seek will be postponed. Your path lies elsewhere for now. Orders are absolute; I cannot let you pass."

With a subtle gesture, Eagle signaled the arrival of two more ANBU shadows. Shorai evaluated the situation. Resistance was not just futile; it was a tactical error. He nodded once and turned back toward the orphan apartments—one of the two gilded cages where Root's gaze remained unrelenting.

On the walk home, he activated the Reality Stone's sensory mode. The world bled into shades of crimson, confirming his suspicions: multiple observers tracked his every move. The invisible threads of surveillance wove tightly around him, a constant reminder that his freedom was currently an illusion.

"This should prove I tried," Shorai mused, a phantom smile touching his lips. "And buy me the time I need."

The following week settled into a mechanical, high-efficiency rhythm.

At midday, Shorai would arrive at the Mission Hall. He and the Hokage would exchange a silent, mutual understanding—a brief smile that confirmed the "distractions" were working. Shorai performed his duties with an efficiency that bordered on the supernatural. He tackled five D-rank tasks daily: another gathering of herbs, tracking another missing pet, assisting market deliveries again, and tutoring the same Akimichi child in the fundamentals of chakra control.

A Shadow Clone was perpetually dispatched to handle secondary chores, allowing the original Shorai to move seamlessly between objectives. By 8 PM, he would exit the Hokage Tower, ostensibly exhausted, but in reality, he was just beginning.

He made several "lazy" attempts to sneak into the Uchiha district. Each time, he allowed himself to be "spotted" by the high-level security. He kept tabs on the Root ninja assigned to him, sensing through the Stone a mixture of confusion and mild irritation in the stalker's mind.

"It appears playing the frustrated prodigy is more believable than playing the fool," he realized. By displaying a limit to his Genin-level skills, he reinforced the mask of his own inexperience.

Once the stalkers retired to report his "failure," Shorai would reveal a smug expression and resume his true night training. In the solitude of his private chamber, he delved into the mysteries of elementals. He spent hours on the Fuinjutsu chakra-engraving method, his spirit burning brighter even as his muscles ached.

Two weeks and a day after graduation, a familiar presence interrupted the silence of his room. Eagle appeared at the door, his silhouette sharp against the moonlight.

"It's time," Eagle said simply.

The summons to the Hokage's office was never casual. Shorai nodded, steeling himself for the next move in a game where every decision was weighed on a scale of life and death.

Entering the office, Shorai found Hiruzen surrounded by the familiar trio: Eagle, Boar, and Cat. The Hokage looked up from his desk, a thin smile playing on his lips.

"How was your day, Shorai?"

"Productive," Shorai replied, his voice calm. "I believe I have breached the minimum threshold to qualify for Chūnin Exam registration."

"Indeed you have," Hiruzen nodded, a chuckle escaping him. "Forty D-ranks in eight days. That is a new record, and perhaps an inspiration for the other Genin. Though I suspect they won't be quite as efficient."

"I don't believe it..." Boar muttered, his voice thick with surprise.

"It fits him," Cat added with a small, knowing laugh.

Hiruzen waved his hand, and the familiar silencing barrier fell over the room, veiling their privacy. His expression shifted, becoming deathly serious.

"Shorai, do you remember our last conversation on the village, on peace, and on balance?"

"I do, Lord Hokage."

"What I am about to share is delicate," Hiruzen said, reaching for his pipe. He took a long, contemplative puff. "You are smarter than most your age, but intelligence is not a substitute for wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience, from the weight of time. It is a value far higher than mere cleverness."

Shorai's brows furrowed. He sensed a foundational secret approaching.

"The village's sustainability relies on a delicate scale of reputation against reliance," Hiruzen continued, observing Shorai's every micro-expression. "Konoha is a military force, born of necessity. The Land of Fire cannot exist without our protection. We are the judge and the executioner of this nation. But to maintain that role, we must be seen as necessary."

Shorai nodded, the political logic clicking into place.

"ANBU," Hiruzen's voice turned melancholic, "are not people who act on emotion. There are tasks—delicate tasks—that require expertise in deception to ensure that reliance on us remains absolute. We fabricate realities so the client remains dependent."

"Diversions, deceptions, and manufactured crises," Shorai murmured. "Situations where survival is on the line, orchestrated to ensure we are the ones to save it."

Eagle gave a light nod of acknowledgement. The room felt heavy.

"I'll always trust a leader with a Council to advise him over one relying solely on his own judgment," Shorai announced firmly. "If these methods are what keep the family protected, I trust your judgment."

Hiruzen smiled with a deep, paternal pride, taking a final puff from his pipe. "Thank you, my boy. You haven't let me down. Now, for your final test. This is a sensitive mission. Pass it, and I will formally grant your mentors permission to take you on their true missions as an ANBU trainee."

"I am ready."

"This task is yours alone. Your mentors cannot interfere. The execution rests on your shoulders." Hiruzen leaned forward, a subtle, sly smirk forming. "Our village's financial stability comes from the Daimyō. He and his court support us, but that support is rooted in their need for our protection. Your mission is to navigate that reliance."

Shorai waited, expecting a high-level infiltration or a political assassination.

"The Daimyō's wife," Hiruzen said, his eyes twinkling with a hidden mirth, "possesses a very special cat named Tora. She loves it dearly. It is an incredibly expensive breed."

Shorai's calmness shattered. His face went through a rapid cycle of shock, confusion, and realization. A laugh bubbled up in his chest.

"I have to... let the cat escape? Or retrieve it from a 'crisis'?" Shorai's eyes narrowed as he looked at Eagle, Boar, and Cat. All three had visibly tensed up, their postures screaming of repressed, traumatic memories of the beast.

Shorai's sly grin returned. "The most dangerous mission in the village. I understand, Grandpa."
