Because the only way to placate an insatiable beast is by becoming an even hungrier one. In this world, the only real power is strength, and without it, one is just a lamb waiting for slaughter, no matter how bright their mind might shine.
This was one of the most important lessons ever taught to Maxim by his grandfather, who helped shape the mentality of the poor youngster.
