Chapter 103 - Chapter 32: The Final Scene

Chapter 32: The Final Scene

Inside the abandoned school auditorium rented by the production team, the art department had meticulously staged the room to evoke a sense of decay and decline. The wooden floorboards on the stage were warped and curling, the paint on the walls was peeling in jagged flakes, and a few old, weathered chairs were scattered about. A makeshift desk served as a podium at the center of the stage, and piles of miscellaneous props were stacked in the corners.

The faint light of early dawn filtered through broken windowpanes, casting a hazy glow over the set. Various professional equipment surrounded the filming area, and the crew worked in quiet, efficient focus.

This was the set of *Ghost Syndrome*. After months of production, the entire cast and crew had finally arrived at the most critical final stretch.

Ai wore a simple white dress, her makeup highlighting a pure, fragile aesthetic. Her long purple hair cascaded over her shoulders as she stood at the center of the stage, which had been decorated to look like a graduation ceremony in an abandoned building. Teppei Nishikawa stood behind the makeshift podium holding a prop diploma; he had heavy dark circles drawn under his eyes, making him appear haggard yet vibrating with a frantic energy.

Koromo Shiranui stood beside Ai, her makeup a blend of intricate and grimy, her costume dusty and disheveled to complete the unkempt look.

"Are you ready? We'll shoot Ai's takes first," Director Gotanda shouted.

"Yes, I'm ready," Ai nodded.

"We're ready too," Teppei Nishikawa took a deep breath and gave a thumbs-up.

The cameras began to roll, and silence descended upon the set.

Teppei patted his cheeks, forcing himself to snap into character. Over the months of filming, he had refined his acting skills under the rigorous guidance of Director Gotanda, and he had made significant progress. He closed his eyes, striving to resonate with the character of Naoto Anna. Koromo Shiranui similarly centered herself to inhabit the other female lead, Shizuna Ueda.

The stars in Ai's eyes grew increasingly brilliant. Within a single breath, the fragile, broken image of Ai Kitajima materialized before the lens.

In the dilapidated auditorium, Naoto Anna stood sternly behind the podium. Behind him hung a rough poster with the words "Graduation Ceremony" scrawled in black marker, the crooked lettering emphasizing the poverty of the scene.

"The graduation ceremony officially begins!" Naoto Anna stated gravely.

"Now, will graduate Ai Kitajima please come to the stage to receive your diploma." Naoto's voice echoed through the hollow auditorium.

Shizuna Ueda held a crude party popper and pulled the string. With a *pop*, a shower of colorful plastic streamers rained down, fluttering through the air.

Ai Kitajima walked slowly through the falling streamers, not a single one touching her, and accepted the diploma with solemnity.

Naoto Anna applauded forcefully, his facial features contorted in a complex expression of grief and joy. "Congratulations on your graduation."

Shizuna Ueda also clapped from the side, tears streaming down her face. "Omedetou (Congratulations)."

"But I'm already an adult," Ai Kitajima whispered softly.

"We are the ones who have grown up," Shizuna replied quietly.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," Naoto Anna sobbed. "You were supposed to be able to grow up."

Ai Kitajima's expression turned confused, as if she didn't quite grasp what they were saying, but the diploma in her hands suddenly dissolved into flames, and she clutched her head as a splitting headache struck her.

She crouched painfully on the ground, as if trying to recall a forgotten memory of great importance.

"Cut!" Director Gotanda called out. "Excellent, Ai. That's a wrap for this take."

He nodded in satisfaction, then signaled the crew. "Reposition the cameras. We're moving on to Akane Kurokawa's sequence."

Ai stepped off the set, and Akane Kurokawa stepped forward quickly to prepare. The crew swarmed the area, adjusting camera angles and lighting settings in a blur of activity.

Akane stood in the exact spot Ai had just vacated, prepared to play the younger version of Ai Kitajima. She simply took a deep breath, and in an instant, she submerged herself perfectly into the role. Her entire temperament shifted drastically.

"All departments ready? Action!" Director Gotanda's voice rang out again. Soft lighting illuminated Akane, and the cameras began to spin once more.

In the eyes of Naoto Anna and Shizuna Ueda, Ai Kitajima's stature began to shrink, bit by bit, becoming increasingly ethereal.

"So, I never grew up after all," Ai Kitajima said with a smile, her voice as crisp as a silver bell.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Naoto Anna covered his eyes, tears leaking from between his fingers.

Shizuna Ueda reached out to embrace Ai Kitajima, but her arms passed right through the girl's body.

"Can you ever forgive us?" Shizuna cried out.

Ai Kitajima's smiling figure slowly dissipated, and a final echo resonated in the air:

"Thank you for granting my wish. I've already forgiven you."

Naoto Anna gazed straight up at the sky, his eyes filled with a sense of liberation. Shizuna Ueda stood in a daze, as if unable to pull herself back from the scene.

Director Gotanda stared intently at the monitor, meticulously verifying that every detail was flawless. The set was so quiet one could only hear the faint hum of the equipment.

In reality, Akane Kurokawa hadn't vanished; she was still standing in place, watching the two adults weep before her.

*What is Aqua-kun doing right now?* She found her mind wandering.

"Cut!" Director Gotanda took a deep breath, then broke into a satisfied smile. "That take is perfect!"

He paused for a beat, then announced loudly: "That is a wrap on filming."

"We're finished!" Gotanda raised a hand.

The set erupted into thunderous applause. Every crew member felt an immense surge of joy–not necessarily because they were moved by the performance, but because the long, grueling production was finally over.

A satisfied smile bloomed on Ai's face, and Akane Kurokawa let out a sigh of relief. Teppei Nishikawa and Koromo Shiranui wiped away the tears from their scene and exchanged looks.

"Ah, it's finally over, Koromo," Teppei said, visibly relaxing.

"I'm so tired. I want to eat something delicious tonight," Koromo stretched, her arms reaching toward the ceiling.

Director Gotanda clapped his hands to grab everyone's attention. "You've all worked hard!" He pulled out his phone and sent several messages to notify relevant parties, including Hikaru Hoshino, that production had wrapped.

"Tonight at eight, we're holding the wrap party at the *Kaifutei* izakaya in Ginza! Everyone from the production team is expected to attend!"

The crew began packing up the equipment, and the actors headed off to remove their makeup and change their clothes. Outside, the sky was beginning to pale with the first light of dawn, and the sun's rays slowly crept in through the shattered windows.

Soon, after all the lighting equipment and props were hauled away, this meticulously decorated set would revert to its original state, becoming nothing more than an empty, abandoned auditorium once again.

It sat in silence, waiting for the next production crew to arrive, waiting for the next film to begin.
