Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Price of Betrayal

The warehouse was silent.

Cold air moved through broken windows.

Rusty chains creaked overhead.

And in the center of the ruined building—

Rohan hung unconscious in black chains, blood dripping slowly onto the cracked floor below.

Arjun stood at the entrance.

Rainwater still clung to his coat.

His shadow blade pulsed softly in his hand.

Across from him—

four masked hunters waited in a half-circle.

The same silver masks.

The same gray coats.

The same calm confidence.

As if they had already decided how this would end.

The lead hunter stepped forward.

"You came faster than expected."

Arjun's red eyes never left Rohan.

"You used him as bait."

The hunter tilted his head.

"We used what mattered."

That made Arjun smile.

A cold smile.

"You made a dangerous assumption."

The hunter folded his arms.

"And what assumption is that?"

Arjun finally looked at him.

"That he matters."

Silence filled the warehouse.

Even the hunters seemed surprised.

The lead hunter studied Arjun for several seconds.

Then gave a soft laugh.

"So the stories were true."

Arjun said nothing.

The hunter continued.

"The mark changes people quickly."

His voice dropped.

"Faster than we feared."

Arjun's grip tightened on the shadow blade.

"I'm getting tired of people talking about me like I'm not standing here."

The shadows beneath his feet spread across the floor.

Thin black smoke crawling outward.

The lead hunter slowly drew a longer blade from his back.

Dark metal.

Curved.

Old.

"Then let's speak through violence."

Arjun's smile disappeared.

"Finally."

And the warehouse exploded into motion.

The First Strike

The hunter with the chain attacked first.

Metal shot through the air like a snake, slicing toward Arjun's throat.

Arjun vanished.

[Shadow Step]

WHOOSH

He reappeared to the side.

The chain missed by inches and smashed through a steel pillar.

Before Arjun could counter—

the spear hunter attacked from behind.

Too precise.

Too fast.

Arjun twisted.

The spear grazed his ribs.

Blood sprayed.

He barely felt it.

Because the blade hunter was already in front of him.

Arjun blocked.

CLANG

Sparks flew.

The force pushed him backward across the concrete.

The fourth hunter moved in.

Unarmed.

Just like before.

That one worried Arjun the most.

Because he couldn't read him.

The lead hunter smiled behind his mask.

"You're stronger than expected."

Arjun wiped blood from his side.

"And you talk too much."

The unarmed hunter suddenly appeared in front of him.

No warning.

No sound.

A palm slammed into Arjun's chest.

BAM

Arjun flew backward into a stack of rusted crates.

Wood shattered around him.

His lungs burned.

He coughed blood.

"What was that…"

The hunter lowered his hand.

"Pulse technique."

Arjun frowned.

"They use skills too."

That changed everything.

Because until now—

Arjun believed only the system granted power.

Apparently he was wrong.

Very wrong.

The Trap

Arjun stood slowly.

Four against one.

Coordinated.

Experienced.

And they were still holding back.

The lead hunter seemed amused.

"You understand now."

Arjun narrowed his eyes.

"You didn't come to test me."

The hunter nodded.

"No."

His voice turned colder.

"We came to measure you."

Arjun's heartbeat slowed.

"Why?"

The lead hunter lifted his blade.

"To see if the king can still be killed."

That sentence hit differently.

Not because of fear.

Because of clarity.

They weren't hunting him because of what he might become.

They were hunting him because of what he already was.

And for the first time—

Arjun understood something dangerous.

The hidden world wasn't waiting for him to rise.

It was afraid he already had.

That thought made him smile.

A real smile this time.

The lead hunter noticed.

"You find that amusing?"

Arjun lifted the shadow blade.

"No."

His eyes glowed brighter.

"I find it insulting."

Then he moved.

The Change

Arjun disappeared.

WHOOSH

He appeared directly in front of the chain hunter.

Before the man could react—

Arjun drove the blade upward.

STAB

The silver mask cracked.

The hunter collapsed instantly.

The other three froze.

Only for a second.

But that second mattered.

Arjun turned.

Shadow chains erupted from the floor.

[Shadow Bind]

The spear user dodged.

The lead hunter cut through them.

But the unarmed fighter was caught.

His legs bound.

Arjun lunged.

The hunter smiled.

Then slammed both palms into the floor.

A shockwave burst outward.

BOOOOM

Arjun was thrown backward.

His blade nearly slipped from his hand.

The bound hunter ripped free.

Blood dripped from his leg.

And now—

he was smiling too.

"You adapt quickly."

Arjun's breathing slowed.

"So do you."

The lead hunter's voice became serious.

"No."

He pointed at Arjun.

"You're changing."

The mark on Arjun's hand suddenly burned.

Pain shot through his arm.

He dropped to one knee.

The shadows around the warehouse began shaking violently.

The hunters stepped back.

Because they felt it too.

Something was happening.

Inside him.

The system appeared.

YES / NO

Arjun stared at the screen.

The pain in his hand intensified.

The shadows beneath him began rising.

The lead hunter shouted—

"Stop him!"

Too late.

Arjun pressed—

YES

And darkness exploded.

Shadow Armor

Black smoke wrapped around his body.

Around his arms.

His chest.

His legs.

The shadows hardened like liquid metal.

Forming dark armor over his skin.

The hunters stared.

Even the lead hunter took a step back.

Arjun slowly stood.

His breathing became calm.

Too calm.

He looked at his hand.

Dark gauntlets covered his fingers.

The shadow blade had grown longer.

Sharper.

He could feel power moving through him.

Not borrowed.

Not temporary.

His.

The system appeared again.

Arjun looked up.

The hunters no longer looked confident.

Now they looked worried.

Good.

The lead hunter whispered—

"…Impossible."

Arjun tilted his head.

"That word keeps following me."

Then he vanished.

The Price

The spear hunter died first.

A single slash.

Clean.

Fast.

His mask split in half before his body hit the floor.

The unarmed hunter attacked next.

His pulse strike slammed into Arjun's chest—

and did nothing.

The hunter's eyes widened.

Arjun grabbed his wrist.

"You hit hard."

Then crushed it.

The scream echoed through the warehouse.

Arjun drove the shadow blade into his chest.

The hunter collapsed.

Only the lead hunter remained.

And suddenly—

the confident man from before was gone.

Now he looked afraid.

He backed away slowly.

"You're not awakened…"

He whispered.

"You're becoming him."

Arjun walked toward him.

Slow.

Silent.

Dangerous.

The lead hunter looked at Rohan hanging from the chains.

Then back at Arjun.

And smiled desperately.

"You still came for him."

Arjun stopped.

For one second.

The hunter saw it.

And used it.

A hidden dagger flew from his sleeve—

straight toward Rohan's throat.

Arjun's eyes widened.

Without thinking—

he raised his hand.

The shadows exploded upward.

They caught the dagger in midair.

The entire warehouse fell silent.

Arjun slowly looked at the suspended blade.

Then at the hunter.

And something inside him changed.

Because the truth hit him instantly.

He had moved to save him.

Instinctively.

Even after everything.

Even after betrayal.

Rohan still mattered.

And that realization made Arjun angry.

Not at Rohan.

At himself.

The lead hunter smiled.

"You still have a human weakness."

Arjun stared at him.

His red eyes became cold.

"No."

The shadows around the hunter rose.

Wrapping around his legs.

His arms.

His throat.

The hunter began struggling.

Arjun walked closer.

And whispered—

"You just reminded me what it costs."

Then the shadows crushed him.

The silver mask shattered.

The body fell.

And did not rise again.

Aftermath

Silence returned.

Only Rohan's weak breathing remained.

Arjun stood in the center of the warehouse.

Covered in blood.

Surrounded by bodies.

His shadow armor slowly dissolved.

Leaving only the mark glowing faintly in his palm.

He stared at Rohan hanging from the chains.

For a long time he said nothing.

Then he lifted his hand.

The chains broke.

Rohan collapsed to the floor.

Still unconscious.

Still alive.

Arjun looked down at him.

The man who betrayed him.

The man who left him to die.

And yet—

Arjun had still saved him.

That truth felt heavier than the battle.

Because it reminded him—

some part of him was still human.

But he didn't know for how long.

Then the system appeared.

Arjun stared at the words.

One line caught his attention.

Hidden Reputation Increased

He frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The system answered.

[The hidden world now knows your name.]

Arjun slowly looked toward the darkness outside the warehouse.

And somewhere far away—

something in the shadows smiled back.
